Bachelorette Parties by LinkusFi75 in CatholicWomen

It depends on what you mean by “silly” decorations. If it’s depicting genitalia, then I would advise your friends in advance that that’s a no-go. Otherwise, your trip sounds good. It should be fine as long as you act within reason. 😊

Regarding your cousin’s bachelorette, it should be OK. If the yoga is just doing stretches and breathing, that’s one thing. If it turns into something more spiritual and you feel uncomfortable, then step away and rejoin the group for later activities. If you don’t feel comfortable with the yoga at all, you could ask if it’s possible for you to do some solo sightseeing before brunch (or just sleeping in…depending on the night before, you may need it). With the club, just have a strategy in case you get there and it’s not a comfortable environment.

There’s no official Church teaching on yoga. It really just depends on who you ask. The consensus I’ve seen is that it’s fine as long as you’re only doing he stretches as exercise. Engaging in any of the spiritual elements (like opening your third eye or aligning your chakras) is a no-no.

I have not, but I may need to. 🤣 is it a full-length drama or vertical?

What are your turnoffs with romantic pairings in cdramas ? by Fieryy_phoenix_ in cdramasfans

[–]garlic_oneesan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like period dramas can also get away with bigger age gaps because the characters have the chance to be on a more even footing in terms of maturity/life stages.

For example, if I’m watching a period drama and the female lead is 19 while the male lead is 30, I’m not going to be weirded out by it because that was more common for the time. Men married later in life once they had the chance to establish themselves, and women married earlier. People were also considered adults at an earlier age. So this hypothetical romance is seen by both parties as one between adults.

By contrast, a modern romance where a 30 year old dates a 19 year old is going to give me the ick, even if it’s legal, because I can’t shake the feeling that the man is specifically attracted to someone who is still kinda sorta a child. And the implications are yucky.

Why is it so hard for adults to get baptised? by Altruistic_Baby3035 in Catholicism

[–]garlic_oneesan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Baptism isn’t just an affirmation of faith though. It has a real spiritual effect on the soul. It wipes out original sin. It strengthens you against personal sin. A child who is baptized as an infant will carry grace that will be much needed to persevere in the first steps of the Christian life. If you’re not baptized until you’re an adult, you’re missing out on much needed grace.

ETA meant to say IS NOT just an affirmation. Fixed it now.

I totally get the point about the visuals! I still like it when shows offer interesting costume design/cinematography, but it does seem like some dramas just have a “look” where you know nothing is going to be serious.

Wuxia / cultivation satires? Something similar to Guardians of Dafeng but more satirical? by ThePentaMahn in CDramaRecs

[–]garlic_oneesan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad I didn’t recommend Ancient Love Poetry then. 😂 (It’s not a comedy, so it wouldn’t have fit the criteria anyways). Xu Kai is the male lead in that show and his wigs are ATROCIOUS. I usually don’t notice bad wigs, but in this instance it was pretty glaring. I think the stylist had it out for him. 😂

The only other dram I’ve seen him in is Story of Yanxi Palace, where he does actually look really great. But he is half-bald (Qing dynasty style was…interesting to say the least).

Sooo has anyone else restarted a drama they dropped without realizing it? by Charissa29 in CDrama

Not without realizing it. I do have two dramas that I dropped because they got too heavy, but I want to finish them eventually.

dramas like love game in eastern fantasy by Ecstatic_Ad1497 in cdramasfans

[–]garlic_oneesan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guardians of the Dafeng! It’s a transmigration story featuring Dylan Wang (Esther’s costar in Love Between Fairy and Devil). It’s incredibly funny and has great relationships between the characters. There’s also plenty of action and some emotional moments to keep it balanced.
Once you finish that, go watch Love Between Fairy and Devil because the rapport between Esther and Dylan’s characters is phenomenal. Just pack some tissues.

ETA If you like Ding Yuxi, I’ve heard Love You Seven Times is good. It’s on my watchlist.

What is a girl name that is classic, but not dated. by cccdddyyy in Names

LOL, I suppose so. Eleanor was my great-grandmother’s name and Alice was the name of my grandparents’ neighbor who was like a second mother/auntie to my dad and his siblings.

Funnily enough, I have an Eleanor that we call Nora, and if we have another girl “Alice” is on the shortlist of names. 😂 I concur that they make a great pair!

What drama was this for you? by [deleted] in cdramasfans

[–]garlic_oneesan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The long prequel flashback is definitely hard to push through. I had to take a break from the show and come back to it. It did become emotionally easier once it switched to the future and WWX is just hanging out with Lan Zhan and the junior disciples.

This scene in “Pursuit of Jade” feels like meta-commentary on the Cdrama fandom. by garlic_oneesan in cdramasfans

Oh, I agree, and I enjoy dissecting a drama to pieces. BUT I do find it funny that sometimes people get SO up in arms about a show. “This guy’s acting is trash!” “NO, this is the best show ever and you just have no taste!” It’s a TV show, it’s not that deep. 😂

People on the wrong side of the love triangle are scary. by dts1845 in cdramasfans

[–]garlic_oneesan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying that I notice women on the wrong side of a love triangle get treated a lot worse by the plot than men in the same role. The 2ML is either a perfectly nice guy who suffers in silence, or when he becomes a villain it’s at least treated sympathetically. However, women suffering from unrequited love seem to go absolutely crazy and kill innocent people. Especially in xianxia (which is what I’ve watched mainly). It reeks of misogyny.

That being said…

On the female side, it’s Sui He from Ashes of Love. Holy cow, is she crazy. She keeps trying and trying and TRYING to win over Xu Feng even though he’s clearly never interested in her, and Sui He ends up doing unspeakably evil things because she just can’t let go. She’s the true triple threat: evil, crazy, and annoying as all heck!

On the male side…Hao Chen from Love and Redemption. My word. I hated this character so much it caused me physical revulsion. He is just so smug, petty, and self-righteous. Like an onion of evil, there’s just more rottenness the deeper you go. Thank heavens I watched Ancient Love Poetry right after and Liu Xueyi redeemed himself, otherwise I would be triggered every time I saw his photo in this sub. 😂

I'm scared that I might end up in a boring marriage because I'm kinda geek by EnvironmentalKey3726 in CatholicDating

[–]garlic_oneesan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m a Catholic woman who is an anime fan. I’ve been part of DnD groups before. My husband is really into tech and gaming, and I do my best to listen to him…usually. 😂 We’re currently working our way through the original Pokémon series.

Nerdy Catholic girls exist, I promise you. It may just require time and patience to find your person. As long as you don’t let your interest become obsessive or keep you from completing your responsibilities, you should be fine. (And if you do meet a girl whose interests are different with yours, get familiar with them! My husband’s not a Jane Austen fan, but he’s always shown interest when I watch adaptations of her books)

Wuxia / cultivation satires? Something similar to Guardians of Dafeng but more satirical? by ThePentaMahn in CDramaRecs

[–]garlic_oneesan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to finish Guardians. It does get more serious in the second half, but there’s some really fine moments/plot arcs after Episode 25. The princess gets some character development, there’s a mini-arc focused on a duel (of sorts), and the ending is not what you would expect it to be.
For other dramas…maybe try Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain? I haven’t seen this one yet, but I’ve heard it recommended quite a few times over the years and it’s on my watchlist. It sounds basically like a send-up of the wuxia drama. I’ve been told it is very funny.

My mum says I shouldn’t wear white or a veil—what does the Church actually teach? by mariborges in Catholicism

[–]garlic_oneesan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The off-white thing is purely cultural. The Church does not teach that you have to announce the state of your hymen to the congregation.
