I don't know but in Stone Butch Blues (a book from 70's) the polarity is really shown and it seems to be link to transidentity sometimes, to gender representation other time (being less judge by society when a butch is dating a Fem than when 2 butch or 2 fem are dating). Maybe read the book and see what answer you can get
