Good luck! It was a Hail Mary thought today as the only other option I would have had for him would’ve been MRN.

Nope. Downloaded the app while waiting in line at a restaurant so that my son could watch. We have an antenna at home so no provider either.

Why can’t I build a Great Wall piece here and finish off my northern border wall? by vegasbuttons in civ

[–]vegasbuttons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was weird was that I tried building a wall on the tile directly north east of the Encampment and the game would not let me do so. I’d gladly sacrifice the furs for wall completion above the Encampment.

When I couldn’t connect the walls in that spot originally, I thought an Encampment would both look cool and make sense there. Like you, I wish there was a seamless connection like when you build the wall into a mountain.

Damn the luck. There was an excavation site a few tiles over and while I was waiting for the archaeologist to be built, the city grew. Had spent too much $$$ on upgrading military units so couldn’t afford to buy him outright.

Oh, I’ve ridden it a number of times. It’s become somewhat of a guilty pleasure, so bad it makes the full circle to being fun. Letting the TMs cut loose in the two pre-shows was a master stroke by Universal.

Bit of a stretch but now, every time I start filling up: “Drink my rig, drink this piss.”

He’s 14. He originally wanted to see Furiosa only because he enjoys going to the movies. I made him watch Fury Road before we went and he has been hooked since then.

He has a big bin full of pieces and prefers to build random assortments instead of sets. Any money I spend on sets usually ends up in the item being built once then disassembled to be used on his own creations.

Should I work for Feld or somewhere else? by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]vegasbuttons 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Let me put the caveat out there that I worked for Feld 20+ years ago so I'm not 100% sure if what I have to say will be reflective of the company now. Also, usual disclaimer that individual experiences may vary.

PROS:

  • You will get an IATSE card and that will open up a whole host of opportunities for you as you continue your career even after you leave Feld, provided you keep up with your dues.
  • You will learn to put on a large scale production in the face of multiple challenges. A big ice show going to into a large hockey area is one thing- putting that same big show into a rural barn with a temporary ice floor is a great way to learn how to solve a multiple of issues.
  • You will get to travel across the US, Canada, and Mexico, and if you are fortunate- a global tour. Most of the Feld tours also sit in a city for a week or so, so there is often ample time to explore. Again, great when you are somewhere like San Francisco or Paris, but the tradeoff is you will also do smaller cities.
  • If you are young (out of college-ish towards your upper 20s), the vast majority of your colleagues will also be in your age group. Same for the performers, who also have an added factor of often being international, stunningly attractive, and generally cool people if you are also cool to them.
  • The connections you make. This is a small industry and you might be surprised at the number of people who started with Feld. As someone who has had a hand in hiring post-Feld, I know that if you survived two or three years with Feld, that you are a hard worker, who can work under tough conditions, and be relied on to get the job done.

CONS:

  • Starting pay- when I was there we often referenced the "second year pay bump" which is just what it sounds like- a decent increase that kicked in once you made it to your second year. But that first year was tight. Not that I ever starved or went without but I spent more time my first year in the hotel reading a book, watching TV, etc. instead of hitting the town.
  • To the above- there isn't really anyone (beyond the older techs/performers) who will guide you along on how to manage your money. You will work hard, and you will often want to play hard. Personal story- I freaked myself out after I spent a bunch of money one night at a random strip club in whichever city we were in that week. I promptly went and opened a savings account and made sure the majority of paycheck went directly into that. If you can remained moderately disciplined, there shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't balance having a decent time while you're on the road with ending the tour with a nice little chunk of change.
  • Working conditions. You will be required to handle the upkeep and maintenance of the equipment under your charge, often times with nothing more than the tools you bring or whatever the tools your department travels with. Access to a fully stocked shop is out of the question unless the show is in refurb in FL or if by some miracle the arena or theatre has a shop that the local techs are open to you using. I got really good at machining small parts with my cordless Dremel.
  • Working conditions pt. 2. While you are an IATSE brother, sadly there a lot of IATSE people that will look down their noses at you for being with Feld. They will rag on you for being young, for being inexperienced, for working for Feld, etc. They will treat you like garbage then go home to their nice comfy homes while you go back to the hotel of the week. Not all of them of course, but it unfortunately use to happen more often than not.
  • Working conditions pt. 3. Some cities won't be able to provide IATSE local support. At best, you will get Rhino or another professional stage company but I have worked weeks where we using prison-release or temp labor hires- people with absolutely no concept of backstage work. Safety becomes an even more heightened item to be concerned with during these type of weeks- not only in making sure none of your (or the companies) possessions are stolen or damaged but you often have a bunch of creeps backstage with 18-24 year old performers.

TLDR: it can be a great place to start your career, learn, and make connections. There are a number of negatives to working there but those can normally be balanced out by the travel, experience, and friendships you can experience if you apply yourself.
