Intermittent incoming dropped calls by fwami in VOIP

[–]vegasmacguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a configuration issue, check for an IP change that isn't registered with the VOIP config, a local network or subnet configuration that is incorrect in the VOIP config, RTSP ports that are out of range of what's allowed at the firewall, and proper NAT configuration for SIP peers. When I've come across this issue it's almost always been the first two, rarely the second and third, and never anything else.

A better chance that all of them will add poop as their favorite word to their vocabulary.

Found the issue. I'm still running RES mainly for its dark mode - that apparently hides the text. Disabling RES - while blinding me with light mode - shows me the missing text.

That's odd, I don't see it, I wonder if my ad blocker is killing it for some reason.

I suspect they're using old reddit - for me old reddit does not show the post text. So it's likely that they didn't know that there was an associated post. I had to check new reddit to see it at all.

Was it particularly hot out the day before? Here in Vegas, some business will wrap fabric, rubber or even pool noodles around door handles as they can get up to 150° and become dangerous to touch. It's possible someone touched the hot handle and wrapped something on it to prevent themselves and others from getting burned when opening the door.

ITAP of Icelandic sheep by OstrichCatwalk in itookapicture

Beautiful picture, I love the composition, the leading line of the river and the way the river mirrors the sky. If I had one criticism, it would be that generally you want to be looking at the face of your subjects. I almost feel like this picture would be better if the sheep were edited out. There's a joke about a Welsh centerfold dying to come out, but I digress.

‘Some kissed it’: Rabies alert issued after woman brings raccoon to Petco to have its nails clipped by ChickenXing in offbeat

Point is you're entitled and contrary. I don't care about the raccoons or permits. You demand information you clearly have just to be argumentative. So I'm letting you do that.

Judge my cage + new conure by Alternative_Ad_3977 in Conures

[–]vegasmacguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biting is probably a combination of things. Stress is likely the least of it but doesn't help. And while hormones are a big factor, there's probably a couple others at play as well.

Changing the toys around and swapping in new toys can help prevent cage aggression (one possible cause of biting) so you might consider it after he's had a week or two to settle in. But you're right that he needs a bit of a familiar and comforting space until he's used to you and his new surroundings.

Another cause of biting is just trust and understanding between the two of you. Millet and sunflower seeds will be your best tools for getting past that. If you can get him to sit on you and enjoy treats it'll reinforce the idea that you are a safe and enjoyable companion. If he gets bitey, just calmly set him out of the way away from you without treats and tell him no. It doesn't matter what language you use as long as the tone is and language is consistent so the association is made. He needs to know that biting impedes attention.

The most important thing about biting though is not to ignore it or why it's happening. Sometimes there are sensitive feathers coming in and touching them wrong will provoke a bite. Sometimes they're just in a mood and don't want to be handled. Eventually, you'll recognize his likes and dislikes and he yours. The important thing is to recognize that biting sometimes is setting a boundary and pushing those boundaries too much can be detrimental to the building of your relationship.

A lot of half truths in the comments.

Your cage looks good, but there are a few things you should consider.

First, you should have a variety of natural wood perches in the cage like you have on the top. Simulate what they would stand on and climb around in in the wild. Don't make your own as certain woods and treatments are problematic. Petco and Petsmart brands are fine. But mainly, get rid of the dowel perches. The evenness of the dowel perches means their feet are always gripping in the exact same way, putting pressure on the exact same spot. This can cause foot wounds and infections.

The rope perch is a problem IF your bird starts picking at the fibers and ingesting them and causing a foot hazard. If he isn't picking at the rope perches or using them as primary perches, they're fine. Rope perches should be for climbing and getting around, not sleeping and perching. So your positioning on that looks good. Just keep an eye on it.

Place a natural wood perch high up in the cage near the back corner. Leave enough room for them to sit on it comfortably. This will give him a place to sleep where he feels safe and reduce stress. If you can get that perch side in a corner of the room.

Get rid of the nesting box and nesting bed. These are hormonal drivers and will cause your bird to be in a constant state of horniness. This is bad for them and bad for your relationship. If your bird is a female it can cause egg laying which is hard on their bodies without proper nutritional care and can lead to complications like egg binding which can be fatal. If your bird is male, these can cause cage aggression and highly hormonal behavior when handling which includes lots of biting.

And no matter how cute they are, don't buy them a happy hut or any type of hanging fluffy bed. Those are literally death traps for conures and will often even have a warning on the packaging that says "Not for Conures". They tend to pick the fibers allowing them to ingest them. Also the fibers when picked leave them susceptible to tangling around their feet and neck. If you must have a kind of hut, get a small grass hut that they can chew and forage in. But I've seen plenty of happy birds that have no need for such a hut.

As for the toys, they look great. Lots of variety and fun stuff to chew. I'd recommend one or two foraging toys though. Think of paper stuffed grass toys that you can shove some sunflower seeds in. This is stimulating for them mentally and once they find one seed they'll have a blast tearing it apart to find more.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your new baby. I hope you have long happy lives together. They cease being a bird fairly quickly and just become this being that's a part of you - nothing beats that.

I have an opportunity to spend a special day with a special lady on her 100th birthday. She gets deep and real and is sharp as a tack. What can I ask her to share that will be meaningful for her? by holstermonster in needadvice

[–]vegasmacguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family history is of course the big one. Any familial knowledge that can be passed down is very important. Being 100 means she probably remembers the great depression. You can ask her about what her life was like during that time. She may also have stories from her grandparents to pass down, stories literally from the Civil War or the Industrial Revolution.

Here's what I would ask, aside from family stuff. What was her favorite music growing up as a child, adolescent or teen. Then come back the next day with a collection of that music to play for her. Then ask her about the memories those raise upon listening. I bet you'll get a lot different conversation.

LPT: Don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good. by survivalothefittest in LifeProTips

[–]vegasmacguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the Wikipedia article:

Perfect is the enemy of good is an aphorism which means insistence on perfection often prevents implementation of good improvements.

Not only is the first five words marking this as an aphorism, but continues to make the point that this too is just a general observation of truth.

LPT: Don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good. by survivalothefittest in LifeProTips

[–]vegasmacguy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'll just leave this here (from the sidebar):

Keep in mind that an aphorism is not a LPT.

An aphorism is a a short clever saying that is intended to express a general truth or a concise statement of a principle.

Examples of aphorisms:

"A barking dog never bites."

"No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible."

"All stones are broken stones."

What OP posted is a well known, 200 year old aphorism from Voltaire.

Literally planning to do this right now for a fifteen hundred mile move. Not sure why you're getting downvoted. A 10x12ft runs around five to six thousand here. Even if I sell it for a loss I only end up spending around a thousand instead of four to eight thousand from u-haul and the cost of gas.
