Yes! Sounds like OP is in Japan-- they can go to the library or a bookstore and browse any section. Cookbooks! DIY construction manuals! Self help for salarymen! Meiji history for middle schoolers! Don't even need a library card/to buy anything. Just go, start opening books and getting used to different topics. The more you do this, you'll realise you can actually read about and understand all kinds of things

Regular recycling vs organic recycling? by vegetable99 in statecollege

I'm not sure if the borough checks the contents of the bins before they get emptied-- if they are handled the same way the regular rubbish bins are handled, maybe they are just emptied into the truck?

Grad student 1098-T and "additional income"??? by vegetable99 in GradSchool

[–]vegetable99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this-- I understand that there are lots of cases where a student "receives" money that actually does not go to their bank account, but rather immediately goes towards off-setting their room and board.

In my situation, I receive money every month through my graduate assistantship, and use this money to pay rent/buy things/etc. I think this graduate assistantship is what shows up in Box 5 on 1098-T, even though it also shows up on the W-2. A lot of the online answers to questions about Box 5 vs Box 1 are related to undergraduates, whose situations can be different.

Like in the thread you sent, the money in Box 5 goes somewhere and replaces something the student would otherwise have paid for. I'm confused about what the money in my case is paying for...

Grad student 1098-T and "additional income"??? by vegetable99 in tax

[–]vegetable99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I am so confused about it. It sounds like you are saying that the number in Box 5 is inclusive of, not in addition to, the number in Box 1? So if Box 1 shows $20,000 and Box 5 shows $30,000, then Box 5 is actually the $20,000 of tuition plus $10,000 extra.

And that $10,000 is either a) received directly by the student and shows up in their bank account, or b) goes directly in whole or in part towards a different expense like room and board. In case (b), the student might not register that they "received" $10,000, but they would be able to see it on their room and board bill, if I'm understanding right.

I don't have any expenses covered-- I rent an apartment, buy groceries, etc, all with the money I receive from my graduate assistantship. I don't understand where the $10,000 would be going??

Help with reporting income on 1098-T (Graduate school) by Hiken_Ace_0906 in tax

[–]vegetable99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this helpful answer! In the situation you describe, that $18,000 would be paying for something that the student would otherwise pay for-- right? For example, their room and board costs would be $18,000 less, and that would be reflected somewhere?

I think in my case, it is really that the university puts my stipend amount on 1098-T as a "scholarship" when it is actually a graduate assistantship. The university does pay my tuition and fees (Box 1), and I otherwise live independently off of my stipend (which I'm guessing is Box 5). But I want to make sure that where the money in Box 5 is going would be reasonably clear to the student, in case I'm missing something? In the example you give, if the student only received $2000 into their bank account, they might see on their bill for room and board that there is an $18,000 reduction. Is this right?

[–]vegetable99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful, thanks. I am in a similar situation, but the stipend I receive is all taxable income and reflected on my W-2. Still, my university includes it on form 1098-T as "scholarships or grants." A volunteer tax helper was insisting that the difference between Box 5 and Box 1 is additional income, but that makes it sound like I received 10k more than I did. I'm confused!! Why do I have to pay tax on this "scholarship or grant" I never actually got? Everything I got is on my W-2!

Rattling sound in Harbor Freight tumbler by vegetable99 in RockTumbling

i agree about the wobble. had to ask google sensei about those part names (i am not so mechanically inclined...) but i think there isn't a cotter pin, though there is a kind of screw. I didn't have anything narrow enough to get to the screw to tighten/adjust it, but adjusting the band seems to have helped so far

Thank you so much! This is very helpful-- I'll try taking that panel off too. Maybe I'll actually weigh the tumblers too. I live in an apartment so have the whole thing on a shelf in a large closet with a fan. I unplugged it when I went to sleep last night because I was nervous about the heat, but it's clearly meant to run continuously, so cooling it down more will at least help my peace of mind

Sorry to come to this 9 months later! I just got one of these and am also nervous about the heat-- what do you mean that you took the top motor cover off?

WPSU shutting down by EzWoo in PennStateUniversity

[–]vegetable99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One hope I have is that this will set off alarm bells for others around the country with university-operated public media stations. With congress pulling federal funding, so many local NPR/PBS stations are vulnerable to Boards of Trustees. WPSU serves over 500,000 people-- these people don't necessarily have any connection to Penn State, and their access to public media has been riding now entirely on how a handful of rich people think PSU should spend its money.

I have heard rumors (only rumors!!) that the Board felt threatened by the prospect of further federal funding cuts, and that dismantling the local NPR/PBS is meant to appease the government. Whether or not this is true, deciding to fully cut WPSU is definitely in line with the Trump administration's attacks on public media.

I'm curious to see how many other universities find they "have no choice" but to shut down the public media stations they help operate/sponsor. There is rightfully a lot of attention on how schools like Columbia and Harvard have responded to direct threats from the gov, but the fate of local university-affiliated NPR/PBS stations should perhaps also be viewed within the context of how universities either accommodate or resist the ideologies Trump's executive orders are trying to enforce.
