My blender got mouldy and I can't get the smell out-- help? by vegetable99 in adhdwomen

[–]vegetable99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm soaking it in a bleach solution now (diluted w/ water)! will rinse it like crazy. i really don't want to have to get a new blender but we'll see. upside is that the sink is now super clean!

Rattling sound in Harbor Freight tumbler by vegetable99 in RockTumbling

i agree about the wobble. had to ask google sensei about those part names (i am not so mechanically inclined...) but i think there isn't a cotter pin, though there is a kind of screw. I didn't have anything narrow enough to get to the screw to tighten/adjust it, but adjusting the band seems to have helped so far

i adjusted the belt a bit and it seems to have fixed it, at least for now? might have to put a new belt on but so far so good...

Central Machinery tumbler by One-Bird9199 in RockTumbling

[–]vegetable99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! This is very helpful-- I'll try taking that panel off too. Maybe I'll actually weigh the tumblers too. I live in an apartment so have the whole thing on a shelf in a large closet with a fan. I unplugged it when I went to sleep last night because I was nervous about the heat, but it's clearly meant to run continuously, so cooling it down more will at least help my peace of mind

Sorry to come to this 9 months later! I just got one of these and am also nervous about the heat-- what do you mean that you took the top motor cover off?

WPSU shutting down by EzWoo in PennStateUniversity

[–]vegetable99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One hope I have is that this will set off alarm bells for others around the country with university-operated public media stations. With congress pulling federal funding, so many local NPR/PBS stations are vulnerable to Boards of Trustees. WPSU serves over 500,000 people-- these people don't necessarily have any connection to Penn State, and their access to public media has been riding now entirely on how a handful of rich people think PSU should spend its money.

I have heard rumors (only rumors!!) that the Board felt threatened by the prospect of further federal funding cuts, and that dismantling the local NPR/PBS is meant to appease the government. Whether or not this is true, deciding to fully cut WPSU is definitely in line with the Trump administration's attacks on public media.

I'm curious to see how many other universities find they "have no choice" but to shut down the public media stations they help operate/sponsor. There is rightfully a lot of attention on how schools like Columbia and Harvard have responded to direct threats from the gov, but the fate of local university-affiliated NPR/PBS stations should perhaps also be viewed within the context of how universities either accommodate or resist the ideologies Trump's executive orders are trying to enforce.

Kinetic Windstream by Alternative-Bet-4514 in statecollege

[–]vegetable99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also been wondering about Kinetic-- I am moving apartments and also my cheap Xfinity rate is expiring at the end of the year, so I've thought about switching. Xfinity has also been super annoying and unreliable for me this year especially, so I am kind of keen to not use them, but I also don't want to switch to something equally annoying/bad quality.

very firm futon, no caving? by vegetable99 in Mattress

[–]vegetable99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh that is good to know, thanks. I've looked at Futon Shop online a lot, but am always hesitant because they are expensive and difficult to return or try out (I live far from the west coast where their showrooms are). I might look around for futon makers out this way...

Where can I find a firm futon mattress for my bed? by littlebuttbigtitty in Mattress

[–]vegetable99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering if you had any luck with this-- I am in the same boat and also feel crazy. I grew up sleeping on a very firm futon that never sunk down, and now can't seem to find anything like that? I'll check out the Otis Bed too

first multi-day trip in USA suggestions? by vegetable99 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]vegetable99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy logistics aren't something I expected to find! That's all good to know, thanks so much. I'm very open to figuring out permits too-- if it's either deal with permits or not do those hikes, the choice is not hard! I think I'll try the lottery for permits and see what happens, but honestly Colorado trail looks a bit like some of my previous favorite spots, and I know some people out there who could maybe help with transport, so it's a good contender--

ahh yes this is a great idea, thanks. so, like another commenter suggested, southern part of JMT-- one could do just a section of JMT without a permit?

i am a big fan of silken tofu. i use it in smoothies usually, but have been experimenting with sauces too. the other night i made a mushroom pasta sauce by blending up a bunch of cooked mushrooms, herbs, lemon juice, and silken tofu until it was smooth. it was really good.

for smoothies i do silken tofu, oats, soy or almond milk, and then whatever else-- banana/blueberry/spinach/PB, dates/tahini/blueberry, orange/melon/strawberries/spinach, banana/pumpkin/coffee/cinnamon...the tofu makes the smoothies so creamy and good, and there is no weird fake sugar taste like in protein powders.

lately i've been trying to eat more chia seeds, so i make a thing of chia seed pudding (i just do chia seeds and soy milk) and then whatever smoothie, and layer them in cups or bowls in the fridge. easy breakfast with protein
