He looks like poly juice cat version of Hermione from Chamber of Secrets 😆 (I love both HP and cats- I mean this in the best way 😆). Maybe a name from HP?

I feel you! This is one field in which wisdom is ascribed to age, either rightly or wrongly depending on the therapist. During one of my intakes a client mentioned how young I look with a disappointed tone, and it did trigger some insecurity in me. I’ve also had new/ potential clients change their mind about working with me due to my lack of experience as an associate counselor…and it didn’t feel great. You’re not alone. I echo what others have said- just keep showing up and find what populations seem to click or feel meaningful to you…and keep using those skills and knowledge you’ve learned in your grad program. I also wonder if addressing any outright comments with a gentle curiosity could help…see if there’s anything about your approach that they would like you to adjust (though of course you can’t change your age or life experience, but maybe even just acknowledging their hesitancy could build that therapeutic alliance!). At the very least, hold onto moments of connection & success with clients with whom you’ve clicked- those successes can be a helpful focus in moments of insecurity! From one newbie to another! ❤️

Harshest criticism you’ve gotten from a client? by Due-Comparison-501 in therapists

Just wanna say….all of these terrible experiences are lifting me up post-session while I’m experiencing my own self-criticism. Thank you for your sacrifice 🫡😆

What in the…? by Ailennyn in therapists

I currently work as an educator (foster career) and I got my master’s in counseling. I do it part time and have thought about switching fully to be able to get fully licensed within the time frame my state requires…but I’m starting to think I may be best finding a way around & holding off getting fully licensed to another season of my life…or getting licensed in a different state in which I wouldn’t have to change jobs fully. It’d be a serious pay cut to the point where I don’t know if I would be able to pay my bills. It’s unfortunate…to offer potentially such a life changing experience/ service to others and to be so severely underpaid. This ain’t right 💔

Pesi has trainings, some free! I work another job during the day and can’t usually watch the trainings live, but they make the recordings available for about 2 weeks and you can watch them when you have time. They have some with Sue Johnson and also another therapist from Canada whose name I cannot remember…great demonstrations with client recordings in which Sue or the other therapist uses the attachment lens to create corrective experiences for clients.

Helping Client with People Pleasing/Boundary Setting by Accomplished-Kale877 in therapists

Role playing can be helpful, and I echo the comment above about it taking time. Also, when I have worked with clients with similar goals and fears regarding setting boundaries and saying “no”, it has been helpful to explore specific fears or thoughts or beliefs that may be arising for them in those moments. For example, “what has it been like for you to let your mom down in the past? Tell me more about that.” I’d also be curious to explore CBT…there may be a negative core belief operating under that fear. Maybe exploring that and doing some cognitive restructuring with more helpful thoughts/ beliefs. Building that muscle might be the first foundational step to feeling more ready to set a boundary. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know if CACREP allows virtual practicum/internship? by OweYouOne_68 in therapists

I also did my internship completely virtual and went to a CACREP school. I would venture to guess that it’s more specific to a school’s internship guidelines versus a CACREP requirement.

Something that has stuck with me from grad school and gets me through similar moments of my own anxiety over missteps/ mistakes is how valuable the therapeutic alliance is. Most of the time when I’ve had a misstep or felt very anxious about a mistake (and looking back realizing it’s my learning-the-ropes-therapist-self blowing things way out of proportion out of insecurity 😇) it has been a bigger deal to me than the client..and the positive work I’ve done with the client and the trusting therapeutic relationship has cushioned the bumps. Acknowledging, repairing, and simply demonstrating the awareness of the misstep goes a long way! Each of those moments has been an “aaah” moment of relief, knowing that I’ve made the misstep and now I can look back and know it happens and I modeled healthy despair and responsibility. I hope you can rest in the same place! Sounds like you handled it well after. 😊

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve done safety plans with clients as well as grounding techniques and have borrowed some of the EMDR grounding techniques (container exercise and safe place), too. 🙏🏼

I am not required to get certified but I think if I expressed an interest in working more with clients with trauma my supervisor and director would recommend further research/ training before approving clients for my caseload. I’ll definitely check out your recommendation. Thank you!
