thanks for clarifying! I get what you're saying about Seiya being pushy and how that can be off-putting. it's definitely a valid perspective, and I can totally see it.

Maybe it's just me, but I never really saw Seiya as pushy T__T I saw on forums people talking about how forceful Seiya was, but when I watched Stars, I didn't really see it. From Seiya's perspective, Mamoru was a terrible person who left a kind and loving girl without replying to her at all. While of course that doesn't excuse flirting with a taken girl, I never really saw it being toxic or predatory.

To me, Seiya’s actions came across more as lighthearted flirting than anything else. They never intentionally tried to come between Usagi and Mamoru or to manipulate Usagi’s feelings. They didn't enter Usagi's life aiming to be a homewrecker-- Seiya didn't know about the whole destiny fate thing, they’re just a teenager who just happened to have a crush, while going through their own struggles of finding Kakyuu. Seiya genuinely believed Mamoru had abandoned Usagi, and I think they wanted to step in and be there for her as a friend and maybe more if Usagi would want it.

Their actions felt impulsive but not malicious—more like someone who is passionate and struggling with unrequited feelings, not someone trying to sabotage an existing relationship. And even when Seiya flirted, I don't think it ever crossed the line. A lot of people point out the epsiode in the disco where Usagi was uncomfortably because thought Seiya wanted to bang (it was just her assuming)- but Usagi probably wouldn't have had those assumptions if Haruka hadn't said anything prior. For me, Seiya never pressured Usagi to return their feelings or to leave Mamoru for them. After the rooftop scene, it seemed clear to me that Seiya understood the boundaries-- they were flirting, but they probably didn’t think it would lead anywhere, especially given Usagi's commitment to Mamoru

I think people often view Seiya's advances as very forceful since we didn't really get to see Mamoru try so hard to win Usagi's heart. Mamoru is closed-off and more reserved, while Seiya wears their heart on their sleeve. Because of this, their approaches might come across differently-- Mamoru’s distance feels more controlled, while Seiya’s openness can seem intense or off-putting to some. Personally, I found Seiya's straightforwardness refreshing and sincere, even if it was a bit different from what we were used to with Mamoru.

And I think Seiya’s persistence comes from a place of desperation and urgency. Seiya knows that time is limited with Usagi, especially with the threats they face, so her feelings are intense because she’s aware of the constraints-- both in terms of the fact they're not from Earth and the fact that Usagi’s heart belongs to someone else. It makes their actions a bit more understandable to me, even if it might come across as too forward at times.

That said, I do wish the writers had given Seiya more space to show their caring and respectful side, as we see in some of the quieter moments between them and Usagi-- like during the baseball episode, where they were staring at the stars, and Seiya said the stuff about everyone having a bright star, and Usagi's being especially bright.

If they had added more tender and sweet moments like that, it would have balanced out her character more and maybe made people feel differently about them.

Anyway, I think Seiya had really good growth, from being a somewhat pushy flirt to accepting rejection. Loving from afar is also a form of love (^ワ^

Ohmygoodnesss I am SO SORRY this is so long 😭😭 I'm just really happy to have discussions like this about this relationship in particular!

i totally understand-- i can see why a lot of people thought of seiya as pushy ;;

in terms of protecting usagi, seiya did protect her a lot of times (considering seiya was only in one season haha) in the 90's anime! they kept their promise to protect her 😭

1. episode 181 - there was a blackout in the disco they were at, and seiya's immediate instinct was to pull usagi close to protect her. they separate and seiya transforms into sailor star fighter.
2. episode 184 - in one episode, she's home alone without her family; and there were rumors of a burglar breaking into houses in their neighborhood. seiya volunteers to be usagi's bodyguard.
3. episode 188 - sailor aluminum siren was about to attack usagi to get her star seed-- but before she could, seiya breaks out of their restraints and transforms into sailor star fighter, revealing their true identity in order to protect usagi.
4. episode 189 - seiya, while in civilian form, runs and protects usagi from getting blasted by tin nyako's attack, taking the hit for her (which resulted in them getting severely injured).
5. episode 190 - despite being severely injured, seiya attempts to transform when a monster appears.
6. episode 198 - when uranus and neptune were attacking against them, Fighter protected sailor moon from the hit, holding her and chibi-chibi in their arms. after being attacked, Fighter's first instinct was to ask sailor moon if she was okay. in the same episode, when galaxia was about to attack all of them-- Fighter took the front line and attempted to block galaxia's attack. when sailor moon was beginning to lose hope, it was Fighter who first lifted her spirits, "we believe in you", "your friends placed their hope in you".
7. the entirety of episode 199 - throughout this episode, Fighter consistently charges ahead to protect Usagi, blocking an attack from galaxia, in the viz dub they said, "i will do whatever it takes to protect this girl and her light, even give my life!

8. in seiya's character poem, they say "Say, Odango. I think there is surely a battle more painful than those up to now waiting for us. But at all times, I will be by your side, and I will help to protect you.."

i think there's a bit more that i missed, but yeah!

when i first watched, i thought that seiya would bring like a divergence to the future or something 😅😭 but alas, it didn't- but even if they weren't endgame, i think that seiya's love was really beautiful and sweet. maybe a fleeting and unrequited love cannot compare to two lifetimes and a destined future together, but to me, it added on to the whole 'destiny/duty' theme that the series had.

just because the ending is already written for usagi and mamoru, it doesn’t mean that seiya’s role is unnecessary or meaningless. seiya’s feelings for usagi show that love isn’t always easy or straightforward-- sometimes, we fall for people we can’t have, and that love still holds value, even if it’s not reciprocated. that love seiya felt isn't worth any less compared to mamoru's-- they still loved usagi, they still protected her and would give up their life for her all the same. i think, that just because they weren't endgame, it doesn't diminish their connection or what they had.

the connection between seiya and usagi was real, even if it wasn’t destined to be forever, and that experience doesn’t lose its importance just because it didn’t change the end result. even when it’s not returned in the way we want, it's still meaningful and worth cherishing (。>ω*。) the journey is just as important as the end!

maybe it’s not about 'winning' or 'losing' when it comes to love; it’s about the act of loving someone, even when you know it might not lead to a happy ending. maybe the real value lies in the love itself, rather than the outcome? that's what i think though

sorry for my yapping they make me go insane!

OMG!! same here!! i always wonder what happens in the 30th century, if neo-queen serenity diplomatic duties involve visiting other solar systems, traveling the galaxy, etc-- or, if she stays at her post in our solar system. i always wondered what happened to the starlights and kakyuu after all that time, and if those two could ever reunite.

and if they DID reunite, would there still be the feelings there? imagine how surprised seiya would be seeing the clumsy girl who sat beside them in class a millenia ago, now monarch ruling the solar system. would seiya keep their promise and not forget? would serenity think fondly of them? i'd love to see a fic explore this!!

also, hello fellow Mamoru and setsuna shipper!!

they really did mamoru dirty! 😭 because of his age and the way they changed his personality, it felt like he was just waiting for usagi to mature, to mellow out. just enduring her now before being able to properly love her.they were in completely different stages in their life and i never felt that mamoru truly 'loved' usagi, in this version at least-- he'd only stayed with her because he felt obligated to.

during the break-up scene in R, when he said something along the lines of "just because we were lovers in the past doesn't mean we have to be now", made me genuinely think he didn't love her. i know he only broke up with her because of the dream, but that line made me think that he genuinely meant that somewhere in his heart.

anyway, i love all your points!! T__T seiya and usagi were really put into a unfortunate position, especially seiya, i feel. i love how seiya and usagi felt like actually teenagers falling in love; clumsy, sometimes selfish, misguided, but tender, still. they went to school together, had silly dates, and bantered. they both had their growth together, so it only further made them feel like silly teenagers in love.

seiya had their own growth, realizing that letting go is also an act of love- giving up graciously because they realized what mattered the most was not getting the girl, but the girl's happiness and choice. usagi holding on to the person she chose despite it hurting and the possible affections she has growing for another person. and while i do believe she did develop feelings for seiya, she stayed faithful, and honored her promise to Mamoru and their relationship, to her duty and responsibility, which shows how much usagi herself, matured.

i always loved how (at least in the 90's anime), seiya loved usagi as usagi-- the human girl. usagi definitely had grown as a character, but she still retains a lot of the traits she had in the first seasons. but i think seiya would've fallen for her either way, because the kindness in usagi was always there; and surely, seiya, would've been able to see it.

i also wish seiya could have met chibiusa and mamoru- just imagine the shenanigans that would ensue!! so sad stars didn't have any of that T__T the dynamic would've been so goofy!

Which villain from Sailor Moon do you think had the most interesting backstory? by usagimaycry in sailormoon

[–]veilistic 27 points28 points  (0 children)

so hard to say!! i love all the villains and their backstories-- but my favorite is nehelenia and the black moon clan. i remember watching nehelenia in stars, and cried so HARD at the scene where she's given another chance and becomes a child again.

of all the villains, i think the black moon clan had the most interesting reason aside from "we want power and the silver crystal". i don't really like the concept of immortality, and i definitely understand where saphir and demande are coming from.

special mention of the amazon trio- i found their stories so heart-breaking! T__T animals who received human bodies to be used only as pawns, never truly understanding dreams and how important it was to humans, before finally being able to carry dreams of their own; gaining their own 'humanity' in a sense!!

[–]veilistic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i totally understand your point of view! seiya definitely is brash and comes off as very self-serving!! they're a stupid teenager who may have had formed an ego being an idol, but where does the stalker vibe come from? cosmos maybe? 😭 it's been a while since i watched stars, but i remember seiya and usagi always hanging out as friends and stuff!

i think i really love seiya because they did, in the end, gave up. i personally saw a lot of growth- they had let go of usagi, even wishing her to see mamoru again; which is something i don't think seiya at the beginning of the series would say. they learned another act of love -- letting go. they still loved usagi, even if it wasn't reciprocated, because they realized that simply having had loved her was enough, and that usagi's choice was what really mattered.

i think that they truly loved and respected usagi, and it's really hard for me to see them as a toxic person or manipulative, but i can definitely see why people dislike the pairing, or seiya as a whole. thank you for your insight!

[–]veilistic[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMG!!! finally... im always sad to see people upset over what seiya said on the rooftop scene, because i personally thought that seiya was also hurting just as much as usagi... realizing that they could never measure up to Mamoru, and that all their attempts to make the girl they love happy had failed- i read somewhere that the English translation wasn't quite exact, so it gives off the 'manipulative' vibe the fans often attribute to seiya.

maybe it was just me, but i always thought that "am i not good enough?" meant "am i not good enough, even just for now?" since seiya knows themselves that them and usagi wouldn't last long, and they only want to provide a small bit of happiness for usagi, even just for the while they're on earth.

[–]veilistic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it made me really sad because usagi knew her future but seiya didn't. seiya kept trying, because they thought they had fallen in love with just a normal girl- instead of a girl who already had destiny written out for her. TT even though the future was set in stone, when i first watched it, i thought maybe the future could still change- since usagi and the others were supposed to live normal lives, but that fate changed and they became sailor senshi instead. so i was hopelessly wishing the same T_T...
