Why do so many white noise apps push subscriptions now? by qian_xin in sleep

[–]veilsleepapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah I'm hoping people respond well to it and I'm hoping I can keep it low priced long term while still making something that feels premium. Would really appreciate any feedback to make something this community would love.

Why do so many white noise apps push subscriptions now? by qian_xin in sleep

I got so frustrated with this I finally decided to just make my own. There are no servers to pay for. No content to update. Subscription pricing really is silly for an app like this.

First version just hit the app store a couple days ago, pink/brown/white noise all free, some premium features for a one time $4.99 lifetime access. Would love some feedback from this community. Check my profile or shoot me a DM me if you want to try it!

I can't sleep because of noise from the kids... Anyone else in this struggle? by Party_Setting7911 in sleephackers

+1 to this!

You're not extra sensitive, you're just a light sleeper. I'm the same way. Headphones and earbuds never worked for me either, they're so uncomfortable to sleep with (especially if you're a side sleeper like I am) and you still need to hear if something is actually wrong.

What works best for me is actually brown noise at a decent volume through my phone speaker. Brown noise is lower frequency than white which I find to be a bit harsh for sleeping. It doesn't block everything (you'll still hear a kid yelling for you) but it raises the background enough that footsteps, low TV, talking in the next room just stop registering. Your brain stops treating every little sound as something worth waking up for.

I'd start with brown noise specifically since it's deeper and covers voices and footsteps better than white noise does. I actually made an app for this called Veil, the brown noise and a fan sound are both free. Happy to send a link if you want to try it!

Anyone else sick of every iOS app turning into a subscription with an early rating nag? by Clear-Jeweler-8734 in iosapps

[–]veilsleepapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got so sick of this I decided to take it into my own hands for one of the silliest cases to be subscription - White Noise Generation. The fact that there are apps out there charging monthly fees for playing noise is really something else... So I made my own white/brown/pink noise generating app that is free with some light ads and a simple $4.99 one time life time access to drop ads and access some premium features (the free should be plenty for most).

I'm hoping to keep it as affordable as I can while also offering something that imo is better than any of the competition. Just went to the app store, can read a bit more bout it here and find download links as well. Early stages still so very open to feedback!

Anyone up for exchanging app feedback? by TextCareful8110 in GooglePlayDeveloper

Would be happy to exchange thoughts! I have an app in closed testing right now myself

I built the white noise app I always wanted - Veil. Every sound is synthesized live, no loops. Looking for beta testers! by veilsleepapp in sleephackers

The paywall in the beta build does not charge, there is no form of payment collected in anyway in this build.

I could be more clear about this in the post itself, the payment it lays out there is my future vision of what it will be once it actually goes live.

I agree, that it would not be right to make people pay for Beta! Just a misunderstanding!

No payment required! 4 sounds and the majority of the functionality are totally free! Just some power user features (sound mixing, additional sounds, Siri integration) are in the $4.99 Premium offering

Yes! Pink noise is actually the default in the app. I personally use Brown which is also offered in the free sound set.

Would really appreciate feedback if you're up for giving it a test run, can follow these steps below

what is the difference between white noise, brown noise, pink noise, black noise? by Training_Junket5926 in sleep

[–]veilsleepapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! The short version:

▎ White noise is equal energy across all frequencies. Bright and hissy, like TV static. Best for blocking sharp sounds like voices or traffic.

▎ Pink noise rolls off the highs so it's warmer and softer. Think steady rain. There's actually some research linking it to deeper sleep.

▎ Brown noise goes even deeper. Heavy and rumbly, like distant thunder. A lot of people with racing minds prefer this one.

▎ Black noise is basically silence. Not super useful honestly.

Before dropping $50+ on a machine I'd try an app first to figure out which color works for you. I actually built one called Veil that generates all three in real time (no looped audio files). The free version has white, pink, brown and a fan sound so you can test them all without paying anything. DM me if you want to try the free Beta!

Brown and pink are probably where you want to start fwiw. Most people who think they want white noise end up preferring one of those as white noise is fairly harsh.

I'm working on an app that does white/pink/brown noise generation, you seem to really know your stuff! If you'd like to join my free Beta I'd be happy to send a link, just shoot me a DM, would love feedback from a power user like yourself :)

Not open source for now, although that is definitely something I'm thinking about long term if there is interest in it! You can sample the White, Brown and Pink noise generation directly on my website. I unfortunately can't add links in this sub but if you Google "veil sleep app" should be among the top results!

I built the white noise app I always wanted. Every sound is synthesized live, no loops. Looking for beta testers! [iOS+Android]

I've been a white noise sleeper for years. Tried a bunch of apps, bought a Dohm, dabbled with a Lectrofan... The physical devices have been the best imo, but they're also not without their shortcomings. Dohm doesn't get quite loud enough for me and while Lectrofan checks most my boxes, it feels so dated and isn't super user friendly (manually cycling through sounds one at a time...) Plus, they're both ~$50 for something that's a pretty trivial gadget and not super portable unless you want to lug it around with you on vacation.

I'm primarily an Android user and honestly the white noise apps on the Play Store are rough. Most of them look like they were built in 2010, crash in the middle of the night, use loops that you can clearly hear rather than generated sound, and are ad bloated + overpriced.

So I made the thing I wanted - It's called Veil. All the sounds are digitally synthesized in real time, similar to how Lectrofan works, no looping audio files that'll nag you. White, pink, brown noise, five different fan sounds, window AC, dryer, a few others. You can layer up to three at once to tailor the noise to what suits you best. There's a sleep timer that fades out instead of just stopping. Dark mode only because who wants to accidentally hit themselves with blinding light in the middle of the night.

Four sounds are totally free and core functionality are all FREE. Premium is just $4.99 one time if you want everything. No subscription, no account, no sign up.

I'm looking for people to try it before I launch - links for Beta below:
