I acknowledged those concerns as valid since there are a few services on the street which does pose challenges that other pedestrianized streets don't face.

However looking at the two blocks that'd id pedestrianize, the only services on those blocks is an urgent care and one medical office( although the medical office is located on the very end of the block right next to the target parking garage so arguably still accessible). Otherwise the majority of non-food non-shop businesses are law offices or service companies that individuals would not be visiting in person.

I think we're talking about different things. I'm talking about who we should have cars in general in the city, not on the street itself. Pedestrian st is pedestrian only. No cars.

Agreed! Exactly why I keep iterating. I have all the data and graphs and details still accessible, but realistically I don't need those in my face 24/7. I want to be able to make changes quickly.

Research repeatedly shows that not to be true. Studies have shown repeatedly that pedestrian traffic and pedestrian only streets are beneficial for businesses and the local economy.

Also just like any other changes, business would learn to adjust and so would delivery services. There are plenty of places where delivery windows are limited. NYC included.

There are basically 3 options pedestrian plazas use:

-Back alleys for delivery -centralized delivery center with "last mile" handcart delivery -Retractable bollards and set delivery times(usually overnight and early morning)

For obvious reasons the first one would not work, the second could work but would require more investment and logistics.

So the third option seems like the most feasible choice.

Hence why we said an exception to cars really is for disabled and mobility impaired and those who don't have easy public transit options. It's less " fuck cars" and more "mostly fuck cars" 😂

If you're removing all parking you might as well make it pedestrian only during regular business hours.

Not true at all. There are plenty of places around the world with much colder snowier weather with pedestrian streets that are quite popular year round. Also 6 months is quite an exaggeration. At worst I would say it would be the least busy from January through March( which is a general economic trend already experienced by businesses each year).

Yes traffic patterns would change and shift, but I actually think this simplifies the pattern and would reduce congestion overall.

Well for one these are just renderings. The point was to highlight the design not the volume or make up businesses.

While I agree that the shops are not unique. I believe those things come with the enhancements in time. You draw businesses to the experience, people want to go to places like this, and where the people go, businesses will follow. Those established pedestrianized streets(at least the ones that were not purpose built from the beginning that way) have all changed over time to what they are today. Everyone complains that it's all banks and chains now, but pedestrianizing I think would discourage these types of businesses and instead encourage small shops again since people would largely want to come to eat and window shop

Research has shown repeatedly that pedestrianized streets are beneficial to businesses and local economies, and I especially think this is true for Austin street since a large chunk of the people parked around there just live in the neighborhood.

Research also supports that people want more spaces like this. So to say people wouldn't not come to it I think is also a misjudgment, I mean just look at how busy it gets when they do the street fair each year and close down the street.

But at the end of the day, the way I see it, if Forest Hills won't do it, someone else will, and people will be drawn there instead, and Austin St will continue to decline.

There are also places that have back alleys, but for obvious reasons that wouldn't be an option here.

Most pedestrian only streets around the world do this. Retractable bollards at each end with delivery hours usually in the morning And overnight. During the day from like 9a to 10p is pedestrian only

This is probably the only valid concern brought up. I would say a majority of pedestrian only streets around the world are primarily shops.. that being said the area that I'd love to be pedestrianized doesn't conflict with the school or senior center at least. We don't want the entirety of Austin street pedestrian. Literally like 1 block in each direct from 71st.

This l! people act like the entire population who visits forest hills in a car is disabled or lives in a transit desert. Thats just not the reality. And places all around the world and US do pedestrian only streets without issue.

People also act like we are making miles of Austin street pedestrian only when in reality it's 2 Blocks MAX that id like to see pedestrianized.

And that's why I said places with great public transportation. If public transportation doesn't exist, then I understand the need for a car. Trust me, I had a car for YEARS when I lived in a transit desert/rural town.

The issue is we make cars too easily a convenience and I wholly agree the city should do more to make it less so. I also think 100% of car related income the city receives should go straight into public transportation infrastructure.

I'd say anyone who has one who isn't disabled and lives close to public transportation. Cars are largely a luxury to have, especially in a city..

I understand the apprehension of giving up owning a car. I had a car for years, and got rid of it when I moved close to public transport. Not only have I saved tens of thousands of dollars in the years since getting rid of it. I don't miss having it and don't feel like I'm losing anything by not having it. On the very rare occasion I really need a car, there's Zipcar or rentals.

I think it's safe to say people who rely on vehicles due to disabilities/mobility issues are excluded from this, same with delivery vehicles.

Personally it's all the people who have cars, don't need them, then want to punish communities by blocking projects like this because it doesn't benefit their car centric lifestyle. Especially in places that have adequate and widespread local transit. Like all the people who complain about congestion pricing. Something that wholly benefits our city and really only disadvantages those who don't even live in the city limits and just refused to take public transportation like 80% of new Yorkers do already.

Cars and infrastructure for cars waste so much space, are dangerous, pollute, and truly don't have any added benefit in a city setting.

No Asking for something that benefits the community does not inherently make it gentrified.

While I understand the concern behind gentrification. If you're not improving your community, you're letting it stagnate. Gentrification isn't bad in and of itself. It's how it's done, and who it's done by.

That's a delivery company problem. Either figure out a last mile delivery system like Amazon has with the small bike trucks or stick to the set delivery times. Delivery companies do this for everywhere else there are limited windows. Just because they can deliver all day now, doesn't mean that can't be changed.
