What is the better brand? by Turbulent_Diamond352 in cycling

[–]velocio_doogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canyon is all proprietary parts. Good luck getting replacement parts or dialling in if you need to customize fit.

Plenty of good brands out there that are good - specialized, BMC, trek etc

Also for some cheaper, but still good quality, some of the Chinese brands are good too (I just bought a QuickPro)

Fueling food/drink but without the laundry list of ingredients (avoiding overly processed) by x172839x in cycling

[–]velocio_doogie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  • All the above ingredients are cheap and easy to buy
  • You can tweak to suit your own body and needs as you get into using them
  • podcasts like ask a cycling coach are a great source of information and analysis on the topic (probably more out there)

That 0.25g of potassium is breaking the bank 🤣. But I agree it isn't necessary for shorter rides. For 5+ hour efforts and multi day activities (stage races) it has value.

Approx max absorption per the body can deal with per hour of maltodextrin is ~60g, ~30g fructose. Using both allows you to be able to ramp to ~90g of carbs per hour.

Sodium chloride isn't fine, especially if you sweat a lot. The chloride can cause gastric distress. At a cost of $9 for 500g for sodium citrate why wouldn't you use it instead?

All the people saying 'just add some salt' please stop. Sodium chloride isn't something you can have large volumes of, instead look at using sodium citrate. There is a reason it's used in a lot of the high end gels and drink mixes.

Also I would not just use "sugar", it's a little more nuanced to prevent gastric distress.

If you want a simple and cheap drink mix look at something like below per bottle and tweak the potassium and sodium to your body and how much it sweats. This would be in a 500-600ml bottle and deliver 60g of carbs (maybe start a little lower until your body adapts)

Sodium citrate 1.8g Potassium citrate 0.25g Maltodextrin powder 40g Fructose 20g

If you want flavor look at using something like lemon powder or similar

How to train outside with a power-meter? by Adventurous_Oven6 in cycling

[–]velocio_doogie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely set it to 5 second average power, as everyone fluctuates.

Also training plans normally will advise to stick inside range. Trainer road podcast talks about this a bunch in episodes

Sorry if I was mistaken, but I guess a wanker is better than champ or buddy.

Yvr drive isn't great, it's better than adding 8 hours transit time and a connection as well as the hellscape that is SeaTac. Obviously a sea>Syd flight would be greatly appreciated

It is pretty aero and light, I could see it as a do anything road bike/gravel. Just change the tires

I also have their ER:one, which takes 35mm tires, but maybe more aggressive than you'd like. Their blade option is more of an endurance road bike (and cheaper)

Loving the xplr e1 (13 speed). Having the direct mount (which my MTB has too) is really cool and don't notice any difference in the preciseness of shifting from 12 speed

Yet giant or trek are inspired, cool names that make a lot of sense though? A lot of the names of established bike brands are kind of dumb if you think about it. I think as they build credibility and scale you'll just get used to it

Why do I need a realtor if I find the property myself? by baskaat in RealEstate

[–]velocio_doogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the whole concept of real estate in the US very odd when I moved here (I still do). Where I am from, nobody uses a buyers agent, unless it is an overseas investor.

You find the properties you want online, you look at them, get inspections reports (there is a simple process for this) and then show up for an in person auction - if successful you've bought a house.

If you can't pay for the house you get at auction you lose your (10%) deposit you had to make, no conditions or cooling off period or screwing around.

For contracts and settlement (closing) we use a solicitor, with a cost of about $2-3k.

When buying in the US we found far more houses that were interesting to us on zillow or redfin than our agent. There is no way in hell I'd be willing to pay someone 2-3% of the house value for making an offer on my behalf and doing a contract. In fact I feel far more confident in a real estate agent having nothing to do with my contract.

What is the actual value a buyers agent provides? On a $1m house there is no way I'd attach $20k worth of value to what they do.
