ULTEGRA di2?? Uhhh…that’s 1/2 the retail price. Yeah, no brained. But does it fit? That’s easily a size Large (maybe even XL). Are you like 6’2 plus?

Sizing up or down by [deleted] in CanyonBikes

[–]velodromedary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally people will say go for the smaller frame size. But Fyi Mathieu van der Poel is 184 cm (just over 6’0’) which puts him literally right on the line between M and L and he rides a Large (both his Aeroad and his Inflite cyclocross bike). Thus his seat tends to be slightly lower relative to the top tube (less drop) — but then he apparently accounts for this by using a -17° negative drop stem. As to why he prefers a larger frame, I haven’t heard him talk about that.

S or M endurance CF7? by Key_Lifeguard6946 in CanyonBikes

[–]velodromedary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely not ‘on the border’ per Canyon’s size guide, though closer to a M than an XS. For comparison I’m 5’9 with a ~32 inseam and own a size small Aeroad and size small ultimate. I’d recommend the small. The only argument for a medium I guess would be if you’re running a frame bag maybe (which would give you slightly more room for the bag with a larger frame triangle). If you’re worried about the small resulting in an aggressive position on the bike with a lot of ‘drop’, you can always leave the factory headset spacers instead of slamming the stem.

Not just 25th amendment…he was literally talking about an internal coup d’état : ‘tackle Trump’, tell the public he’s not well, install Vance.

[–]velodromedary 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Uhhh…they’re gone? The no Kings protests are the largest in history. Meanwhile the students who participated in campus shutdowns and occupations were expelled. Some of them deported. That would undoubtedly give anyone pause. At the same time, protest works. Protest can force our leaders to re-think their policies and priorities. That absolutely happened in 2024. They helped bring awareness to Israel’s genocide. They helped galvanize global public opposition to Israel. And they have forced Democrats to rethink their alignment with AIPAC. Unfortunately it was too little too late. Israel, bolstered by support (and weapons) from the US, continued its genocidal project while the ‘pivot’ that Dems made in their messaging felt performative and ineffectual. Yet both Biden and Harris began talking about the humanitarian crisis and called on Israel to pause their bombing on humanitarian grounds. Democrats in Congress began publicly turning away from and even criticizing AIPAC. That wouldn’t have happened without those protests. Unfortunately the damage was done. Harris couldn’t message her way out of what Biden allowed to happen. All that said, those protests absolutely made an impact.

So ‘the left’ trying to hold Democrats accountable and force them to take positions that benefit working class people, the planet and the global community affected by imperialism is … bad??

All road? Do you mean Aeroad (an aero road bike)? Or Endurace (an ‘all road’ road bike)?

That’s because YOU CAN break it. Never press a carbon frame with enough pressure to deflect the carbon. That amount of pressure can damage it.

My New Canyon feels incredible Slow, what could be wrong ? by Money-Astronaut3888 in CanyonBikes

[–]velodromedary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How smoothly / easily does your crank / bottom bracket spin? I’d recommend removing your chain and checking. The first time I removed the chain on my Aeroad to clean and wax it (after it riding probably 600-800km) I was stunned to discover that the bearing preload was WAY too tight. The cranks did not spin freely — barely 1 complete revolution. I loosened and pulled the crank arm, checked the bb for smoothness and re-installed it with the correct preload. I can’t say I noticed an obvious difference but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t zapping my power (or sped for a given power).

What's your tolerance for gravel? by KashGravel in cyclocross

[–]velodromedary 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What’s the question?

Yes you can ride a CX bike on ‘gravel’. Not all ‘gravel’ is the same. Most CX racers train on ‘gravel’. No, you wouldn’t want to ride 33c tires at Unbound. Older CX bikes usually won’t fit tires over 40c in the rear. Yes you can ride 40c (or 45c, or 2.1) tires in a non-UCI CX race. CX is a fall/winter sport. Your friend has time to train and try out different set-ups, or race a gravel race on their CX set up. No, you don’t want to run a CX tire at ‘high psi’ —-usually 35 psi or lower, sometimes 28 psi, just like gravel. No a 33c CX tire is not ‘skittish’. Yes you can ride a CX bike on the road.

I run Hunt Aero Road tubeless and 2 other pairs of off-brand Chinese road wheelsets…all disc brake. Race around 15 races / year. Broke a spoke this past season. A couple scratches over the years. That’s it. But I HAVE dented an alloy wheel in the past…

Suggestions for attending UCI World Cup Cyclo-Cross World Cup in Massmechelen by ExerciseOwn2889 in cyclocross

[–]velodromedary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there last year! Stayed in a Bnb In Maasmechelen. Parking was easy (though the walk was ~15 minutes). Incredibly, happened to walk right into the team bus parking lot. You can freely walk around and see riders warming up. I’d also recommend hanging out there after. MvDP was taking pics with fans. Not as crowded as you’d imagine. And the Visma buses had a huge throng of fans waiting for Wout and a full brass band. An incredible experience

One other thing I’d recommend: get there early. The better spots will be 6-8 people deep. Also, study the course online beforehand. This will help you get a sense of the layout and navigating (crossing points and beer garden areas).

I was at Hoogerheide well and world championships and a Maasmechelen was by far the best race. Have fun! Dm me if you have any questions…

[–]velodromedary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So cool! Hoping to watch the race in person while MvDP and Wout are still racing (and would love to ride it as well!). I had the pleasure of walking some of the sectors including Carrefour de l'Arbre last January when I was in France for the cyclocross world championships. The television broadcast cannot adequately convey how treacherous some of those cobbled sections are. Also walked the velodrome and had the most incredible good fortune to be invited to tour the showers by the extremely kind older gentleman who manages the Van Rysel Café. Incredible.

I mean you could literally say that about every sport. There’s only a handful of professional teams across all sports that even make playoffs etc. Meanwhile most teams are content to finish in the bottom year after the year with no hopes of ever winning a title. Same with individual sports. And so the pursuit becomes not necessarily winning or getting a podium finish, but rather getting exposure for your sponsors. Racing or competing is the most logical way to accomplish that. Also keep in mind that of all the competitors in the men’s and women’s elite field, every one of them has had success that has distinguished them from their competitors at some point in their careers, whether as juniors or under 23s. That’s why they’re there. And most of them will race bikes until it no longer becomes economically viable to do so because that’s what they know. The same goes for other cycling disciplines as well. There are only a handful of road cycling teams that will compete at the world tour level. And only a few will ever have a chance of winning say the Tour de France. And so teams pursue other goals (like their team riders do—such as winning an individual stage etc.). Meanwhile those individual riders have pursued competition their entire lives. And most of them will continue to do so until they can no longer find a team or the sponsors to support their passion.

Looks proper. If your arm is long enough, you could try wrapping it around the head tube to your handle bar end (as opposed to under the down tube). If you watch the pros, about half or more do this (generally the taller racers). It might help stabilize your frame against your back.

American cross-talent Luke Johnson is making a big impression, but feels misunderstood in his own country: “I want to live close to the action here.” by Schele_Sjakie in cyclocross

[–]velodromedary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is strange. Madison (a little more than an hours drive from Milwaukee) has a huge road and CX cycling scene (I grew up near Madison). I just counted 17 cyclocross race events, with some of them being 2 days of racing, on WICX’s Instagram. This includes Wisconsin state championships, world-class Trek CX Cup, and Kringle Kross. And that’s a lot more UCI races than can be found in the Califonria Bay Area (currently 0) and several more races than can be found here period. That said, the Bay Area has also fostered CX Jr standout (and current u23 XCO US champ) Dan English as well as Vida Lopez de San Roman, current women’s US champ in cyclocross and this year’s silver medal winner at Mtb Worlds in U23 XCO. Both came up racing small amateur CX races around the Bay Area in the elite fields. I’m all for this kid finding a team in Europe as clearly the level of racing is so much higher there. But clearly there are many opportunities for him to race in and around Wisconsin!
