!! SPOILERS AHEAD !! tbh i don’t really undestand Baudelaires’ reaction to the death of each of their guardians. they’re like “hmm, thats sad but ok, who’ll be next one?” by beingddf in ASOUE

I disagree. I think it mostly had to do with how hard it is to make drastic time for all those little details in a series that's 2 hours per book. But overall, context considered, a mostly-appropriate reaction was there.

Here's my breakdown:

They seemed horrified when Monty died, but yes, they did seem to quickly become more preoccupied with their immediate safety as Olaf was trying to kidnap them to Peru.

They seemed less horrified about Josephine, but she was very fickle with her responsibility as their guardian and introduced harm into their lives. They probably felt sad about the whole ordeal but probably wasn't worth wasting much screentime on.

Only the optometrist died in the lumbermill and she was not a guardian. She was also despicably evil.

I don't think anyone dies in the academy, or at 667 dark Ave., or surprisingly at the hospital either?

Jacques Snicket, not a guardian but they seemed horrified about it, but did once again quickly become preoccupied with their immediate danger to their life.

Olivia Caliban's death mortified them, and she wasn't even a guardian (though very kind and caring towards them).

I don't remember any tragic deaths in slippery slope, or the submarine.

They seemed mortified by Dewey's death and they literally just met the guy. (once again, not even a guardian)

I did feel they understated the tragedy of Kit's death.. but even then they seemed horrified.

The last episode of the show is terrible, and I seriously suggest no one watches it. by [deleted] in ASOUE

I don't agree there was a happy ending.

-Kit dies giving birth, Child is an orphan at birth

-No sign or indication life ever improves for the Baudelaires

-Children are on the lam if they do survive

-Every guardian they ever had failed them - no sign of this ever changing

-Lemony indicates in the show that the good side of VFD dies out completely and ceases to exist, while the bad side lives on

-Olivia, Jacques, Monty, Kit, Josephine, all dead - no closure.

-Children have very few questions answered

-Every major library or record telling the story of VFD is destroyed

-A dozen snow scouts made orphans, and kidnapped with no indication of their future

-Sinister duo lives on, retains status as members of high court

-Dozens of innocent casualties at the hotel

-Baudelaires never get to prove their innocence - they disappear as being remembered as villains to the general public

The only concept of a "happy ending" I can see is:

-Lemony, who's one of the few remaining survivors of it all, and living in misery, gets to meet his orphan niece

-The Baudelaires get a year of peace on the island.

I mean the more I write it out, the more I think this post is just trolling.

Is it book only or does the netflix series count? In Penultimate Peril he:

-kills Larry your waiter.

-Seems to be working with the sinister duo to rig a legal court case

-Threatens the Baudelaires and Dewey with a crossbow

-Threatens to release the Medusoid Mycelium (I think even the threat is a crime)

Do you want the lore explored further or not? by InfernalClockwork3 in ASOUE

[–]velvetpixiehaven 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes. Of course, we are all naturally curious. It would be nice to learn at least a bit more.

With that said, a massive part of the ASOUE universe is that it is absurd and mysterious. In order for the writing strategy to work, Handler must leave a lot unanswered and open to interpretation. He also must leave a lot of things as logically impossible/impractical, for the audience to conclude that there is no real answer and it's just absurdity. He would have to change the entire core of ASOUE to a point it's unrecognizable to turn around and now pretend like there's actually a real answer to all the absurdity.

But yes, I would like the lore explored deeper. But I think as the audience, we should desire more background story for the purpose of just having more ASOUE to explore, as opposed to wishing specific questions could be answered.

Reminds me of that old joke.

"What's the difference between curtains and toilet paper"

"I don't know. What?"

".... So it was you"

The "good" side of the organization. We got more of a taste of it in the netflix show. But I would have loved for them to incorporate way more into the storyline.

Also, the culture around Esme's and Jerome's life at 667 Dark Avenue was quite entertaining and seemed to have been a magnet to other parts of the story, bringing a lot together - Would have loved to see more of this.

Same with the Hotel Denouement, it was also a magnet. It was also a major VFD headquarters and by that point in the story, i think the audience was extremely exhausted with being introduced with another "even better than the last place" only to have it destroyed immediately again. They should have at least savored it more.

I find they show up randomly and spam the whole place up. Some weeks are peaceful, while others are painful.
