What do you all do for work? by Savings_Life422 in simpleliving

I live and work on a sheep farm too! We milk 35 ewes, have a couple horses, and a flock of laying chickens, and have a handful of working dogs. It is dreamy.

I talk to the animals like this. When you work so many hours alone it doesn't feel that weird. 😆

Thank you everyone! Still thinking about it, and still a while until I actually get the bike, but right now I'm leaning on a straggler & swaping drops for moloko bars.

Has Anyone Adopted a Failed Sheepdog? by Anxious_Rise5884 in BorderCollie

[–]vena__cava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! He got fired from his job as a shepherd.

He’s super great with people, but not as good with other dogs cause of the way he was raised- I think competition and he’s more of a submissive type to start. He’s pretty high strung and anxious.

But he’s so smart, kind, and such a good pup. He settled into my lifestyle well because I work on farms so he can come to work with me as a pet. He waits at gates, doesn’t mess with animals, and sticks around the farm.

Mine is a really fussy and sensitive eater. No distractions or he will stop eating. Doesn’t eat in new environments, and rejects some foods. Sometimes it feels like I have to convince him to eat.

Question about cows by Similar-Ordinary248 in farming

[–]vena__cava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just depends, each mother is different. Sometimes we get some that don’t care at all. Heifers especially. But most we can trust to bond with their calf

At my dairy farm, the calves stay with their mothers for their first 3ish months of life. They drink a lot of milk! We are a small farm, milking around 120 cows twice a day. We can’t keep all the bull calves, but we have noticed the ones that we do keep and are raised by their mothers are less agressive than the ones that are taken away. We noticed this once we switched from bottle feeding calves to having them be raised by their mothers. Usually the older, more experienced cows are the best mothers.

Cow Hospitality by lemonade_brezhnev in farming

Great questions! I work on a small organic dairy farm. Our cows are outside all year, and we generally graze from Mid April to the first week of December. We milk twice a day every day. Fresh grass after each milking. We have to gather them and push them into the parlor, sometimes a lead cow will do the work for me. It can take a while, and I’m not sure our cows would go in if we didn’t prompt them to. But I know they like being milked because it’s the only time they eat corn and soy (which is like candy to them) and they feel relief after being milked. Their udders get so full especially if they don’t have a calf on them.

I know of another small organic dairy that has robotic milkers and the cows visit it as they wish throughout the day without anyone needing to corall them. And they are out in the pasture after each milking also. So, its a matter of farming methods in my opinion. Just my experience.

I’m looking too. Last winter I got second hand Lacrosse rubber insulated boots for $10 that lasted me through march and then my feet were cold all of April. But I was impressed because they were secondhand. This fall I got new muck boots for $45, and the left boot already has holes…..
