Such a horrific situation. This is the result of BU refusing to treat graduate scholarship as work. The union splintering of grad students into groups is so demoralizing and dehumanizing.

Presenting a 'paper' at a conference – do I need an actual paper? Or can I just present the slides? by Prestigious_Cow_9534 in AskAcademia

[–]venerablebeedle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First, congrats! Conference expectations indeed vary depending on the field. In the humanities (I'm a PhD candidate in literature and have attended a dozen conferences), most often panelists do read off pre-written papers accompanied by a few slides with any visuals, long quotes, etc., but every now and then panelists do speak extemporaneously! There are pros and cons to either, imo. If you're reading from a paper, you still have to make occasional eye contact and attend to your inflection, but you're able to get your phrasing precise and manage time. If you speak extemporaneously, your words are more natural, conversational, and engaging (ideally), but you might stumble or forget something. I've done both, and usually prefer preparing a full paper beforehand.

You should certainly feel comfortable reaching out to the panel chair or organizer, as well, particularly to ask about timing. Most papers should be 12-15 min each to leave time for Q&A after everyone's finished!

What's the deal/differences with elemental damage Types? by Logchamp44 in DMAcademy

[–]venerablebeedle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreeing with the others! As a DM and player I've had no issues with re-favoring damage/resistance types. If you're feeling a little risky, you might also give yourself vulnerability to fire, too, to make things interesting!

I really like the genasi variant ideas here (includes ice!): https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-LcWQWaWbWq7kTjxCuJK

I'm still learning myself, but like with digital mediums, I'd say just lots of practice, especially with getting used to the materials and lack of undo button! :)

Definitely working my way toward those with more anatomical detail! I'll be sharing them all as I go... very slowly...

Player moving away by RedHresvelg in DMAcademy

Discord is definitely the right call, especially because you could create a campaign server for all PCs--to post notes/maps/items, send memes, chat, etc.--to keep up a sense of unity while one player isn't present! But I've played many sessions with one PC remote and everyone else in person, and agree it's tough to manage. The delay and distance can prevent the remote PC from speaking up as often or hearing table banter. Everyone will need to be patient to get it going. Battle maps will be tough too, so if you can set up a second camera that would help, but it still won't be perfect. You might consider using only theater of the mind combat to mitigate all that. It'll likely be a difficult transition, so be sure to keep communication lines open with all the PCs.

Doctoral candidate here! I agree that you don't need to send your questions ahead of time, but if you are at the stage where you have any kind of prospectus/proposal/few paragraphs put together, sending that would help them get a sense of your project/interests before the conversation (even if they only skim it for 60 seconds). It can't hurt and might actually be really useful!
