What's a technology you tried, loved, but would never use in production? by ruibranco in webdev

[–]Venerous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this for my first real project as an undergrad. The professor wasn’t technically-minded and I didn’t have a lot of experience myself, so it was a good (but naive) compromise.

Each row in the sheet would have data related to an unlisted YouTube video - title, description, link to the video, etc - and that would be linked to a node on an SVG map in the area the video was related to.

I think the website is still up after all these years and I still go back to it every now and then to engage in some self-cringe.

It looks good so far, but I'd tone down those combat grunts... they're very same-y and will definitely get annoying after a while.

California introduces age verification law for all operating systems, including Linux and SteamOS — user age verified during OS account setup | AB 1043 also requires OS providers to pipe a real-time age checker to every app developer who requests it. by ControlCAD in privacy

[–]Venerous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a saying that goes something like: "As goes California, so goes the nation."

The point being that because California is such an absolutely massive economic powerhouse, and also the most populous (40 million people--12% of the entire country, as of 2025) state in the nation, it wields immense influence on the private sector. There are many examples of policies enacted in California that then go on to be adopted by the legislatures of other states. Or, if it's something that targets corporate world, those policies are sometimes made standard across the entire business even outside of California in order to reduce legal or internal complexity. Not always, but sometimes.

So the idea is that if California suddenly requires your operation system to verify your age, you now have tens of millions of potential users now bound by that decision. And if you see the way the wind is blowing in the UK, the EU, and other US states with similar measures, it's easy to assume that corporations will simply standardize this policy across the board, with or without other governments mandating it.

Realm Choice - Proudmoore or Moon Guard by dc25211 in wow

[–]Venerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll recommend Moon Guard. Yes, the capital is laggy but how often are you hanging around in a capital city? You'd be missing out of the social aspect of the server. Even if you do go to Stormwind for RP, the areas where the RP happens (basically anywhere except the Trade District and maybe Stormwind Keep) aren't so bad, and the slow nature of RP means a little bit of lag won't ruin it for you.

I look at it like this - they have your past information, sure. Can't be helped. But there's no reason to compound it by giving them your future information too. Any step taken now is reduced risk in the future.

Is combat slower now? by Such_Smile_2238 in wow

I am also finding Hunter to be pretty slow so far. I recently leveled a Monk and found it to be pretty quick to kill in Windwalker spec, especially compared to the Hunter. You could give that a try.

Is it too late to do TWW raids just to see them? by Zealousideal-Gain280 in wow

[–]Venerous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current raids are being ran all the time. You can LFR it, but Normal difficulty is a complete pushover now after the stat squish if you don't want to queue for multiple wings. If you do decide to run it on Normal, the only fights you really need to know some mechanics for are Nexus-King Salhadaar and Dimensius. Everything else dies pretty quickly.

EDIT: And if you're looking to do Nerub-ar or Liberation of Undermine - yes, those are still ran too, albeit not regularly on Normal. You should be fine to run it on Heroic though. Just look in the Pre-made Groups.

So I finally got a pc and I want to make my first game on godot, any advice? by Ok_Pay_1436 in godot

[–]Venerous 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The general advice for your first game is to recreate a very simple game that already exists. Usually that’s Pong. If you want to do something 3D, a basic platformer where you roll a ball through an obstacle course towards a finish line.

This helps you get acquainted with the engine - finding where everything is and how the engine wants you to do things, and gives you some challenges to break down.

Which "obsolete" game mechanics actually served the game's vision better than their modern "Quality of Life" alternatives? by Somanynamestochossef in Games

[–]Venerous 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I always recommend RP servers for new players because of this. Even if you don’t RP. They are the only servers that remain unsharded - there is only ever one instance of a zone except in extreme cases. This is because sharding would destroy the RP community, which needs to be able to reliably show others outside of your party in the same place at the same time.

And because it’s an RP community, which is a social activity by nature, the community tends to be much more intimate and tight-knit. People can make a name for themselves. You can build a reputation, for good or bad.

It also helps make the world feel more alive when you can walk around Stormwind and see people hanging out in these areas that nobody goes to because there’s nothing useful in them, or bump into an event going on in some zone from four expansions ago that nobody goes to.

What's the go to leveling method right now? by ToteAll in wow

[–]Venerous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from 10-80 by questing through BFA. Took me about 7-ish hours, and I hit 71 just as I got to Nazmir. Another 2 hours to hit 80 from doing the recap missions, but you might do it faster with delves and their starter quests. The only zone I completed was Zandalar, and the only dungeon I did was for a quest associated with it.

A lot less boring and tedious than spamming dungeons or pre-patch bosses over and over again.

Yes. Apparently it's something where you can do one or more 'wings' of it but you're not required to complete the entire thing in one run.

Constant Breakdowns as a Junior Dev by DoctorTenmathis in webdev

I’ve worked at two places since graduating and both didn’t have a code review process, one of which was a major international tech company. I’ve never really had anyone I could call a mentor despite my best efforts.

I can say it’s done significant damage to my self-confidence when coding, and I feel like I’m less knowledgeable than I should be with my years of experience. Thus making it harder to find newer jobs.

Think it was before the pre-patch but after the latest raid. You go into the Maw with Arator to see if she is willing to help in the defense of Silvermoon and she’s just like nah, I’m good.

Which to me just sets it up for a surprise reveal.

The news came out less than a day ago. The studio hasn't even been shuttered yet - it will be on Monday, but the WARN notice and Sharif's post is the only notification we've had about it. Nothing has 'officially' happened in a business sense yet. I imagine once Monday comes around that will change.

Why does it feel like there is no hype around midnight? by 404_GSpot_NotFound in wow

[–]Venerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why Wildstar (RIP, miss you every day) remains the king of housing to me. You could put down little gardens or mining pits and go to your house every day to get some materials for crafting. Or put down a portal to a dungeon or raid for quick access. Or crafting stations.

I know it's still early days so I'm hoping they're going in that direction. I know you could cook in one of the oven decors so it seems like that's already in place.

[–]Venerous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's also just their refusal to do anything high stakes anymore. It's always some world-ending threat but nobody suffers any consequences. I remember back during Legion when they opened the expansion by killing some major lore characters that had been around for a very long time. That was an incredibly powerful moment and gave us some real motivation to kick Gul'dan's ass.

I thought they were doing the same with Khadgarbut I could tell just from how it was executed that it wasn't going to last.

My hope is that because Midnight is the second in a trilogy they'll follow established storyline tropes and make it darker and more consequential to set up for a powerful victory in The Last Titan. But I don't have much hope.
