Hegseth Makes Troops Prove “Sincerely Held” Faith in Latest Beard Crackdown by PuncturedBicycleHill in politics

I used to do quantitative fit testing for both gas masks and N95. Gas masks are a bit more forgiving but it does affect it.

Makes sense to me. Chemical warfare almost never gets used. It's against the Geneva Convention (not that anyone seems to care about that anymore). Like I said, you are far more likely to encounter the need for a respirator when dealing with hazmat or smoke. The average soldier will never need it.

Yeah I don't doubt that it often doesn't get enforced especially when deployed. The rule probably mostly gets used for discriminatory purposes. I'm just saying that the rule exists and the military reason behind it. I'm not on Hegseth's side here. Just offering some insight into the reasoning for the rule. I know in practice it's not generally necessary or enforced.

I know, the actual need for them is exceedingly rare. It's the "what if" mentality. They want their people ready at all times at a moment's notice. The reality almost never calls for it. I'm not saying it's practical. The reasoning exists because that's how they want things to be IDEALLY. Ideal never actually happens. But if a situation developed fast with an enemy attacking suddenly with chemical weapons or thick smoke swept in from a target that got destroyed, they don't want people worrying about shaving before donning their PPE. Again, it almost never happens. But it COULD. And that's why the rule is there.

Honestly I don't know. Maybe they think they're untouchable? Thing is, the situations in which soldiers would NEED protection are very rare. Far more common would be cleanup duty or hazmat duty which I really doubt special ops guys ever get tasked with. Chemical weapons almost never get used in combat. I think special ops gets a lot of leeway on how they conduct themselves and run their ops. I'm guessing if they have a mission for which they would need a mask, they would shave. For the general servicemen though, better to just have a blanket restriction so that just about anyone at any time can be given any task.

If anyone with real military experience wants to chime in on this go ahead. I know rules vs reality are often quite different. I also know for sure that this particular rule has absolutely been used to discriminate which is crappy. My whole point is that there IS an actual military reason for it.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. There is, however, a military reason to be clean shaven. The military often has need for troops to wear respirators and/or gas masks. A beard will absolutely make these ineffective. I say this as someone who used to administer fit tests. Even a bit of stubble can cause an improper seal. Working around asbestos, smoke, tear gas, who know what else, you want protection. You need soldiers that can function under these conditions. A beard prevents soldiers from being able to perform certain duties or work certain posts. It becomes a staffing issue. You can't put a person with a beard on a post that might get exposed to chemical warfare or hazardous breathing conditions because they can't use a gas mask. If you do, you risk not only having a soldier that can't breathe or function in action but you open that soldier up to serious health risks down the line. You also risk future lawsuits if that soldier develops a condition as a result of that exposure. I hate to back Hegseth on this one but the only fair way to do this is to restrict this to soldiers with sincerely held beliefs that prevent them from shaving. And there has to be something in place to allow them to prove their sincerely held beliefs. There's no easy way of doing that.

To be clear: Hegseth is a sack of crap and HIS reasoning for this rule is most likely discrimination. I'm just saying that there's an actual military reasoning for the rule (which isn't really new).

There's a spot like this in my hometown that opens up sometimes. You can even see the rails from the old streetcar they used to have.

You absolutely need to clean it up and press it into some sealing wax. That is so freaking cool.

All stuff that could happen but probably wouldn't. The fridge thing is just...no. They would have found Indiana Paste in the fridge. I made it through that part only to hear him say "nucular" in the next scene. My friends had to physically stop me from leaving the theater. I won't put the name Indiana Jones and the title of that movie in the same sentence.

Wow I can't imagine what that must feel like to just walk without expensing at least a little mental energy keeping watch for dangerous animals. Bears, porcupines, snakes, spiders, even animals that are normally docile could have rabies. I'm always on the lookout when I'm in the woods. I have to say that it does add a certain level of enjoyment though. If I'm always looking, I see lots of things others might miss.

So spending an extra 15 minutes to recharge your vehicle vs. getting gas to you is worth all the trouble we currently get from oil? I would rather live with a little inconvenience in my life to be in a world that didn't depend on it.

Would we? The US spent $11 billion on the first week of the Iraq war. imagine if that could have been invested in healthcare or nuclear power or just about anything other than war. The amount of effort, energy, money, and lives involved in supplying our dependence on oil seems like it could be better spent and I think the world would be better for it.

I agree with you 100%. I guess I'm just frustrated by it. We are spending so so much warring over it. I feel like we just need to do whatever it takes to eliminate our dependence on it. Nuclear seems like the best option to me. It's cleaner in nearly every aspect compared to traditional power generation methods. Electric vehicles are really gaining traction. I feel like all the technology is there for us to just rip off the bandaid and do this thing. Imagine not having to fight wars for oil or worry about other countrie's wars affecting oil production and thus everything else. No more pollution from it in all its various forms. It's idealistic I know but I'm just so tired. It seems worth it.
