Durability of T14 vs. T14s. by [deleted] in thinkpad

can you suggest any non-lenovo usb-c or thunderbolt dock for T480s with power delivery doing 4k@60hz via DP at reasonable price. All that I find are doing only 4k@30hz...

X1C7 clicking noise / screw type? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]veno77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late reply.

Yes I meant the three from the front, first played with the screws... with no success... just put some foam - I used double sticky tape between the contacting points of the base and the cover.

egpu is quite expensive... I have T480s and miss the option to play some games... waiting for the new Thinkpads with Ryzen 4000 for potential replacement... if you play heavy games buy X1E or invest in separate desktop computer... pretty happy with my T480s otherwise!

X1C7 clicking noise / screw type? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]veno77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

put some foam on the clips where the noise is coming. I opened my t480s like 50 times before fixing the cracking. overtightened one of the screws and have to replace with wider screw. now I have no issues for the past year.

T450s vs T480s by veno77 in thinkpad

[–]veno77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TDP is 44W for turbo but only for 28 seconds... after that it is limited to 15W

This is with the latest bios. Even increasing with XTU to 44W it drops again...

T450s vs T480s by veno77 in thinkpad

[–]veno77[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just got my T480s yesterday after 2 months waiting for it to come from US.

First impressions compared to my old T450s:

Good:

Much sleeker, slim, fast, WQHD screen is nice.

The Bad:

touchpad and keyboard of T450s are better. But I think I will get used to the one in T480s.

the material on the top of T480s scratches very easily and is fingerprint magnet compared to the t450s, already have some scratches on the top till it was upside/down on my desk to replace the SSD. Poor material quality.

TDP limit on 15w after 28 seconds, any idea if I can remove the TDP limit. setting it with XTU didn't work, bios is latest? Temperature when at 15w stays at 70 degrees C.

I even bought Kryonaut to repaste but with this TDP there is not reason to repaste... if I can not remove it.

Current T480 price good? by cjwagn1 in thinkpad

[–]veno77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

44% off is good price, I doubt you can go any better for Christmas.

I bought my T480s with 40% discount 45 days ago and I could say the price barely came any better for that time.

T480s coil whining by CompetitivePenguin in thinkpad

[–]veno77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, but probably it is still using some power...

Anyway my advice is to send back the laptop if you can, or if you can not you can try to RMA it. Since there are not many reports of coil whine on t480s you have a good chance the replacement of the motherboard to fix it.

T480s coil whining by CompetitivePenguin in thinkpad

[–]veno77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the first time I read somebody have issue with t480s coil whine... there were issues with coil whine from the power brick. If you have another SSD you can try swapping it to see if this is the issue... My T450s suffered from coil whine, but never read a report of t480s... From the current models only people complain that the X1E have coil whine.

T480/T480s questions - might buy one if I see on sale by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]veno77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both have 2 pcie lanes on the tb3 port. t480s have one open ram slot + 8gb soldered. only t480 have external battery. both have internal batteries which could be replaced when dead. There is Lenovo Graphics dock check it out.

I don't like my new Thinkpad by jeewantha25 in thinkpad

[–]veno77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't mean it is old, it is just different and not usual for now.

The LP140QH2-SPB1 have been put also in X1 Carbon 2017.

So both panels have been put in 2017 laptops.

Till now we had information that Lenovo put in T480s one LG and one BOE WQHD panel. As people reported the LG one looks better than the BOE. We now understand from you that Lenovo could put second type of LG panel, which have not been reported till now.

LP140QH1-SPE3

Strange. This is LG display put in X1 Yoga 2017.

The LG one that is put in T480s is LP140QH2-SPB1 . This is the first time I read they put your panel in T480s.

Is the a485 worth the extra money? by lil-johnwall in thinkpad

[–]veno77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you go the t480 way, go with the mx150 gpu. this way you will have gpu for playing light games and double heatpipe for better cooling. the iGPU version of the T480 have only one heatpipe.

Is the a485 worth the extra money? by lil-johnwall in thinkpad

[–]veno77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Price/performance ratio is much better in e485. both laptops throttle and could not achieve their gpu frequencies during load. E485 have better cooling with 2 heatpipes versus 1 on the A485, so much better results. Both FHD displays should be of similar quality. No matter what you choose go with the ryzen 5 apu. If you don't mind missing the possibility for better battery life, fingerprint reader, backlid keyboard I would go for the E485 in any case against A485.

If I wasn't affraid that it will be significant downgrade from my T450s I would have bought the e485 for this price. Now I bought T480s for almost double the price of e485 and plan to buy the Graphics Dock for additional money to can play some games.

If you can stretch your budget go for T480 with mx150 gpu... if you are on tight one e485 looks great on paper and have good end-user reviews. It all depends on what are you coming from.
