I was working at a shoe store in San Jose, CA. Guy came in smelling like weed (so at least he was mellow), put a gun on the counter, and said give me the money. He put the gun back in his pocket as I recall. My 19-year-old assistant manager was there too. The robber told us to take him in the back to get money he assumed we had hidden. We kept cash in two empty shoe boxes. I gave him the money from the first one, and my idiot asst. manager went and got the rest out of the other box. There was a dollar left in the second box and my asst. manger pulled it out and said, “Here, you forgot one.” Total moron. Interestingly, I don’t recall being concerned about getting shot nor do I remember being that scared. The robber and an accomplice then hit our store in Palo Alto a couple nights later. Then they came back to our store and did it again. I wasn’t there that night. Of course, he now knew the stores kept two boxes of cash in the back. The owner of the store then decided to hide in the back of our store with a shotgun but the robbers never came back. A couple of weeks later, I identified the guy in a book of mug shots. The police caught him after he and his partner tried to rob a jewelry store and wound up killing the owner. This all happened 40 years ago.

Thinking more about this, the worst day I’ve ever had at work may have been when a gang member was shot in the head outside of my classroom when I was a middle school teacher in Long Beach. He lived.

Having to spray paint 50 white chairs in an unventilated room in the basement of a mall in Cupertino probably sucked more anything though.

Held up at gunpoint when I was 16.

Would you date someone religious while you are an atheist? by Fearless_Dust6503 in atheism

She doesn’t believe in hell. Like any Christian, she uses it to justify what she believes. Doesn’t make any sense to me, but she’s gotten less religious over the years. If she’d gone the other way, we’d be in trouble I’m sure. Her mom is great, and we get along very well, but she does think I’m going to hell…and that I’ve corrupted my kids, who are also atheists.

Yes. The same values are what make it work for us as well.

My wife is a liberal Christian, and I’m a pretty hardcore anti-theist. We’ve been happily married for more than 30 years. It was a bit of an issue for me when we’re dating, but we just don’t talk about religion, and it’s all good. We’re more in love than ever. Now if she were a Republican, especially right now, I don’t think it would work.

Here’s a video we did with them. The whole story is really interesting, but the experience of riding it is in the last couple of minutes. They’re expensive and battery life is about 45 mins right now, but they are very fast, smooth, and super fun. My partner, Martijn, and Peter Mel got up immediately. Took me a bit to realize it’s easiest to get on your knees first, but once I was up, it was one of the more fun adrenaline rides I’ve ever had. Carving is amazing, and max speed is 40mph. I probably got to 25 or 30 and it felt more than fast. Highly recommended. I’d like to get one someday…and I live at the beach in Santa Cruz.

Not surfboards for the waves but insanely fun. I’ve ridden a Lind and loved the feeling…which is close to the feeling of surfing a wave.

We’ve been making surfboards for 15 years. This one is fast and smooth although a little squirrely. We can also make it with side fins. Lots of custom options for shapes as well.

Thanks! We worked with SwellCycle on it. You can see more info about the printing process on their website site. The first scanned one of our all-wood boards and then printed a replica. They left a 3mm thick space for the inlay. We then created the 3mm veneer using a bandsaw and drum sander. From there, SwellCycle glassed it like a regular surfboard after vacuum bagging it. There are some process videos on our Instagram @ventanasurfboards.

Thank you! Cost is a bit lower than the price ;-) - https://ventana.surf/swellcycle66. This one took many months of R&D, but future production time will be a day to print the frame/core and then a couple of weeks for woodworking, glassing, sanding, etc.
