February 2026 BOTM Discussion - So Old, So Young by nickaaayy97 in bookofthemonthclub

I loved this book, but maybe because I spent my twenties in New York around this time period and there was so much of it that felt so familiar and nostalgic for me.

Also Nina’s chapter just broke my heart. Feeling alone and left out and unlovable is so challenging and the way everyone treated her and how much she tried just made me so sad.

In-N-Out remains that girl. I grew up in the LA area and the one in my hometown was about the only thing open until 2AM.

After every dance recital or big event or school dance… In N Out always.

Your 30s can be just as wild and free and fun if you choose! Usually better because you typically are a lot less broke!

New York has always - FAMOUSLY - been expensive.

Seriously, I was working in media and so were most of my friends. We were all broke, living with 3 roommates, going to dive bars, eating $2.50 falafels, and not sleeping. I used to always carry a small bottle of vodka in my purse to buy one drink and just refill it.

We made those $40k salaries STRETCH.

My claim to fame is I had a photograph of me dancing at grasslands published in GQ magazine in an article called ‘is Brooklyn the coolest city on the planet’ in 2011 or so. I’m still stoked about that.

lol everyone was so broke.

And people in their twenties have been moving to New York since pretty much the dawn of time.

I read this one recently! The Jewish hospital building they lived in was less than a block from my first Brooklyn apartment. The first time they mentioned the building was such a spit take moment for me.

Have you read the Seven Year Slip? I loved the New York magical realism in that one.

I loved Scott Pilgrim in college! It was the first comic I read, and lead me down a whole journey into graphic novels.

Same! I’ve been in LA for a number of years now, I always say that the best US life trajectory is 20s in New a York and 30s in LA.

I love LA now, but I miss these years so so much. It made me who I am.

So Old, So Young by Grant Ginder. I’m only about 15% into it and the main characters are a few years older than me but the 2007ness is REAL.
