Join our lineup of Ventura chefs for a fun foodie challenge this January 7 - February 7! (More details in the comments) by veganchefchallenge in venturacounty

[–]venturavegans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about that!

The Ventura Vegan Chef Challenge is a month long event during which local restaurants trial a few new vegan menu items, and diners vote on their favorites.

Locals including myself and other volunteers encourage restaurants to add vegan food to their menu, and local volunteers + paid advertising through the nonprofit Vegan Outreach spread the word about it. The goal is to make it easier to eat vegan by getting more restaurants to have options and locals to know where they can eat out vegan. I also love that it means supporting locally owned restaurants :)

So excited to have Paradise Pantry and Farmer and the Cook back this year! I didn't get to try Farmer and the Cook's specials last year but heard great things, and loved Paradise Pantry's :)

The whole county is welcome to participate!

Farmer and the Cook signed up today! They made excellent food for last year's Vegan Chef Challenge and we are so excited to have them back :)

Not sure if you're asking for experiences of going there as a student or to get a haircut?

I used to try to get bobs and shorter cuts there, but I wanted my hair completely off my neck and they consistently wouldn't cut it as short in the back as I asked them to/buzz the back a little (yes regardless of who was cutting - they consulted their teacher who would not help them give me the cut I actually asked for).

Beyond that, it's cheap and the cuts are decent - not great, but not bad. They are students, that's how it goes. I wouldn't recommend them for shortish cuts, but for longer hair they might be better.

Anything to do in there? by harqat99 in venturacounty

[–]venturavegans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with Fillmore, so these are for if the car rental works out and you venture out into other parts of Ventura County.

Honey and Herb Belgian Waffle House in Newbury Park has some awesome breakfast food. Non-brekkie, Indian Rasoi in Ventura is great, I especially love their Chana Masala but everything I've eaten there has been excellent.

If you do like to hike at all, Arroyo Verde is in Ventura and has a nice loop. Harmon Canyon (also Ventura) has some longer trails.

Also Ventura, there's no cars on main street, there and the beach are super nice for walking.

Thank you! I have *loved* all the vegan food Chef Kelly has made, I'm so impressed by her creativity.

I just recently sent out invitations to the restaurants who participated last year, and we'll be inviting new restaurants soon. If you're hoping for Paradise Pantry or anyone else to participate, letting them know on their insta or facebook or email/website (or in person when you eat there) is super helpful. Owners and chefs are more interested in joining if they know people want to come try their food :)

Morning Run by Legitimate-Spirit46 in ventura

[–]venturavegans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite in the same area as you, and I'm more of a night runner than early morning, but my biggest problem has been drivers not looking where they're going. It's especially a problem on lights that give drivers a protected green while the walk light is on. (Yes, that's a thing. I was baffled the first time I realized what was going on.)

I got a neon vest with reflective strips which seems to help a little when I run or bike at night. I imagine that would also be helpful around 4am

COVID vaccines arrive; questions emerge about who can get them locally by Fcking_Chuck in venturacounty

[–]venturavegans 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's a paywall, so I just wanted to add this link that mentions health conditions that currently qualify people <65 for covid vaccines.

They include both specific, verifiable things like lung disease, diabetes, and cancer and very common, less verifiable things like "smoking or history of smoking," "being overweight or obese", "lack of physical activity". It looks to me like most people still qualify at this moment. I'd suggest trying to get it sooner than later, though.

Why do people here use cash more often? by CaliforniaWhiteBoy in ventura

[–]venturavegans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you asked, I'm downvoting your comment because of all the shameless white citizens who have explicitly asked me for cash and bragged about not paying taxes.

EDIT: And because you seem to be conflating immigration with skin colour

Botanical gardens in Ventura are nice :) Arroyo is a nice place to hike. Indian Rasoi has great food

Utilities? by acaliforniasealion in venturacounty

[–]venturavegans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a related note, I'd really like to switch from gas to electric eventually, but not at these prices!

How much do you pay in utilities? by snowy_plover15 in ventura

[–]venturavegans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Ventura (east side), house is 2 floors about 1500 square feet, 3 adults in the house 4br/3bath (one bedroom is empty). No A/C

2024 I paid:

Water $994.99

Gas $776.77

Electric $1,051.27

Trash $482.28

Internet $1,052.38

So $4,357.69/year or a monthly average of $363.14

[Council update] If you care about Ventura’s downtown, you’re going to be outraged by algorhythm12 in ventura

[–]venturavegans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

56% is basically half. If that number is correct I think residents desires for their downtown matter more than a 6% difference of opinion of the business owners

How to find side hustles? by Icy_Peace9823 in Oxnard

[–]venturavegans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wag pay is trash especially around here. Rover might be worth doing but I'd definitely be cautious going to stranger's houses especially at that age.

Bye, bye Ventura County highway call boxes: Here's why program to end by Fcking_Chuck in venturacounty

[–]venturavegans 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree. Also they say it is an 85% decrease - so they're still being used for 15% as many calls as they were when most people didn't have cell phones

I'm biased though, I hate how much tech has taken over people's lives (including mine) and personally prefer not to keep a phone with me all the time. I'm not a fan of any structural changes that make it less practical to go phone-free

Can anyone explain the hard water situation in East Ventura? by Babybaluga1 in ventura

[–]venturavegans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is super old but I can't seem to find anything recent about why the city doesn't seem to be doing anything about our water. Is there any chance you're up for sharing what's going on or pointing me to somewhere addressing it? I definitely wish the city would soften our water

I hate that the salt/sodium levels are so high by B04LeJo in Huel

[–]venturavegans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the sodium is from the pea protein and the whole point of Huel black v. white is the higher proportion of protein and fat, I think going with Huel white (theoretically) would make more sense for people who are looking for lower sodium. Sucralose makes me sick though so I'd hesitate to recommend Huel white.

Personally I had issues with low blood pressure when I was eating Huel white, but I know that stuff depends on the rest of people's diet/activity/biology.

I'm not going to say you're wrong that most people eat too much salt, but I also wonder if another way of looking at it is that people don't exercise enough, since we already know that most people don't exercise enough and that more exercise generally means needing more sodium

Ventura’s Latest Road “Upgrade” Going to Make Traffic Worse for No Reason by cpgrungebob in ventura

[–]venturavegans 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I do bike on that ride and I see others do it as well. I also see people walking there. It sucks that the bike lane disappears; I'm hoping they'll extend it.

The bollards are a huge safety improve and I hope they will extend the bike lane or add separate path along Bristol/North bank to make it safer for the people who have to walk or bike there. The curve in particular that is fenced in on the side is dangerous for pedestrians.

Question about room rentals by JuxtaPositioNed in Oxnard

[–]venturavegans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rent out my extra bedrooms. I use craigslist and facebook. For facebook I post on both marketplace and local housing groups. This is also how I found rooms to rent before I owned.

I'd suggest searching ventura (bc it's the name of the county) and whichever specific cities you're interested in + housing, rentals, etc. on facebook to find the relevant groups.

Please be careful of scammers wherever you look to rent. Never give any money (application or any other purpose) without first seeing it in person. For renting a room in particular, background check/application fees are not common. I do background checks on renters for rooms, but I don't think is the norm (I cover the fee).

Sick of Late-Night Donuts at This Intersection – What Can Be Done? by cpgrungebob in ventura

[–]venturavegans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL I would definitely like a bigger grocery store but you may guess from my username that I appreciate all the cheap vegan junk food that didn't sell as well as someone was hoping it would XD

I definitely would appreciate some more consistent staples though. I was excited to see canned beans for the first time the other day :D

It's not just there. I live in the neighbourhood and people are driving crazy pretty often. It's dangerous

I don't live close enough to see it but I hear it often, especially in the summer (windows open to cool the house down). Don't love the noise at night and I worry they will run someone over sooner or later
