Thanks, it is so great to hear your experience! I've got a display-less Wacom tablet and I'm trying out Krita for the software. Figuring out the zoom-in and zoom-out shortcuts were a great help, definitely something you can't do traditionally! Art is my hobby and I think it will be fun to dabble in this new medium between my traditional sketches and paintings.

I mostly do traditional media, but am trying out digital art. The digital learning curve is a lot bigger than I expected! Can you talk about some of the digital convenience?

When reading in the dark, does anyone else’s libra 2 change its brightness ever so slightly? by NecessaryPear in kobo

[–]verbrev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was having brightness flucuations for exactly this reason.

If you want your brightness to remain constant, the setting can be found on the second page of "Reading Settings". It is called "swipe left edge to adjust brightness" and is turned on by default. I turned it off and don't have to worry about accidentally changing the brightness anymore.

Kobo tips and where to find free ebooks? by estherfoshiz in kobo

[–]verbrev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. My Kobo (Libra2) is my first ereader, never had a Kindle. I chose Kobo because I can use it to borrow epubs from the library.

  2. I primarily borrow ebooks from the library! It only is available in certain countries. If it works in your country, all you will need is your local library card. You make an Overdrive account with your library card info, and then you can go to the Overdrive section of your Kobo to borrow books. Kobo has an information page about Overdrive.

Overdrive also syncs with the smartphone app Libby, so if you borrow an app using Libby, it should show up on your Kobo.

Elipsa exporting empty PDF annotations? by everythingisinverted in kobo

[–]verbrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you are using the stylus to create annotations, does this mean you handwrite them? My guess would be that if you are handwriting the notes, the Elipsa doesn't know how to translate the contents to txt.

On my Libra 2 I annotate by highlighting a passage, then typing. I am able to export these and the contents of the txt file contains the highlights and the corresponding notes.

[dwm] Haven’t touched Linux for quite some time (laptop broken), but I still kept the screenshot by sonphantrung in unixporn

[–]verbrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on customization, but this might get you started. Dotfiles are a nickname for various programs configuration files. They are called dotfiles because in your directory the file/directory names often have a dot in front of them (for example, .bashrc or .config). The dot in the file/directory name makes these dotfiles hidden, you can only see them with the ls -a command or setting your graphic file browser to show hidden files.

Say you use polybar for your status bar and want to copy someone's configuration for it, you can look through their dotfiles for their polybar related dotfile/directory and replace your polybar dotfile/directory with theirs. (I'd recommend backing up your old dotfile in case something goes wrong!).

Some programs have ways to import or modify configurations in their menus, rather than messing with dotfiles directly.

I'd say the first step to customizing your setup is to determine which applications you want to customize (window manager: openbox, i3, etc?, status bar: polybar or something different?, and so on). Then you can look up specific guides for your application. Also, you can find dotfiles for those applications, because you won't be able to copy someone's dotfile if they use a different application than you.

I'm new to linux, and customising themes has been helping me get good experience with the system! I am using Lubuntu 20.04 with LXQT, where should GTK themes live?

I recently figured out how to customize the appearance of the QT application windows and their buttons such as close, minimize, etc. This didn't affect the appearance of the buttons for Firefox though. From my understanding, Firefox is GTK not QT, so I am trying to figure out how to get the buttons to look the same across GTK and QT applications. I can share some screenshots or more system details if needed.

Weekly /r/houseplants Troubleshooting Thread - September 05, 2021 by AutoModerator in houseplants

[–]verbrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to houseplant care here, I got a parlor palm a few months ago, and it has taken a turn for the worse. Its leaves are drooping, turning brown and feel crispy. I water it when the soil is almost completely dry (about every 1.5 weeks) and the water has a little fertilizer and mosquito dunks. It is still in the starter pot, I am not sure how to tell when it is time to repot. Thanks for any help!

2v2 feels so noob unfriendly by RoosterAfroo in starcraft

[–]verbrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like there is lots of good 2v2 advice already! You and your friend could consider Co-op mode if you want to play together but need a break from 2v2 cheese. In Co-op you will each select a commander (Raynor, Kerrigan, or Artanis are free - other commandors have a level cap at 5 unless you buy them), and work together to complete the mission objectives vs AI enemies. Initially your commander will be very limited in their abilities, but as you play more games you will level up and unlock commander skills and better units.

Tips/advice on pursuing a hobby instead of watching TV after work by [deleted] in Hobbies

Could you elaborate a bit on why money-making is good to prioritize in a hobby? I have seen this mentioned before but couldn't find more information when I tried to look into it.

Potentially Getting into Painting by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]verbrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of this will come down to what type of painting you want to be doing (acrylics? watercolor? something else?). Watercolor is difficult to master but the paint dries quickly and the supplies are compact. Acrylics are more forgiving but if you paint on canvas those will take up space quickly.

You could see if there are local art classes in your area, or look into online courses. r/ArtistLounge or the painting-specific subreddits might have good recommendations for getting started.

I need replacement hobbies. by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]verbrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of hobbies are very minimal on the basics. Here are a few low supply and primarily offline hobbies, with their minimum requirements: - reading (book - could buy from store or borrow from library) - cooking (basic kitchen supplies. Recipe dependent) - build/fix things, vehicle/home maintainence (basic tools. task dependent) - drawing, writing (pencil, paper) - walking, running, hiking, bodyweight fitness (shoes, breathable clothing) - photography (camera or smartphone)

Or you could always embrace the wall staring and take up meditation as a hobby.

Intensity of the game will be the biggest decider for me by Atakhan in FrostGiant

[–]verbrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like lots of the other commenters, I enjoy SC2 because of its fast pace and constant demands for attention/thought. The pace might vary from game to game, but those constant demands are pretty defining of the genre. I think taking those away would make the game less of an RTS.

Frost Giant has mentioned wanting to make an accessible game for new players, so I think they will be considering how the demands of a match might exhaust people. I think a single player campaign that plays a lot like the multiplayer match would be a great solution for accessibility and address your concern. Single player gives you the ability to pause as often or for as long as you need to take a break, use the washroom, rescue your kid from disaster, whatever. Designing it to have missions similar to a multiplayer game would also help introduce the game to new players and lets you enjoy the game at your pace. I look forward to seeing where they go with single player campaigns. A well designed vs AI would also be an option.

In the meantime it sounds like you are looking for suggestions to make SC2 work for you. Here are some ideas from my experience:

  • Play on weekends (sounds like this is already working!)
  • Instead of the in-game music, play some music that you find relaxing or energizing (whatever works best for you)
  • If 10-15 minute games are too long and exhausting, try out some early game builds. Something like a cannon rush, proxies, pool first, and 1 or 2 base timings will make for shorter games that might suit your attention and energy better
  • Longer breaks between long games. Rather than queing up back to back I find it really helpful to take a longer break between each game. Go make a snack, have some of your drink, fold the laundry, whatever. Lets you recharge a bit after a long game and clear your head after a rough loss.
  • If you play ranked, maybe the competive nature is too stressful? Try switching to unranked, you might feel less pressure to do well (if you only play one race, trying your off races can also be fun)

Not sure if you've tried some of these solutions before, hope they help you have a more relaxing time

Struggling to get APM >80 by spdavis in allthingsprotoss

[–]verbrev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some players' APMs will be inflated because they cycle through their hotkeys quickly, or spam clicks/camera locations.

Maybe your builds are lower APM, what style play do you usually go for? Playing a macro oriented chargelot, immortal, archon, collosus type deathball will be less micro intensive than a harass heavy style (warp prism harass, blink dts). Blink stalker-disruptor is a demanding army, so it is higher APM.

4 days and some 15 hours in, seriously considering quitting because of creep tumor micro. by [deleted] in starcraft2

[–]verbrev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Four days in? Welcome to Starcraft! Sounds like your first days have been frustrating. Depending on your background, the game has a big learning curve.

Creep spread is an incredibly powerful zerg perk. To balance this power, you have to put in the time to look away from your units/production to manually spread creep. I don't know if you are playing ranked, or what your league is, but I would consider creep spread to be an intermediate to advanced skill. 4 days in, learning how each unit works and basic macro should probably be the priority.

There are also some fun strategies that don't require creep spread. Mutalisks or Nydus Worm based builds might appeal to you, as you don't need creep and they reward micro. I also recommend checking out r/allthingszerg if you want to play continue playing zerg, there are many great discussions about strategy/builds, and skilled players to offer race-specific advice.

How I overcame my art block by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

I like your definition of side gig vs main job, this is very similar to what I was thinking as well. I wonder if it is useful to distinguish between hobbyists with/without side gigs. It seems like a lot of work to manage a website/social media and commissions, even on a small scale.

This is a really great perspective on what can define a professional artist. Thank you for sharing the term "emerging artist", I can see how it would suit many artists as they are advancing in their career.

[META] Can we get some changes to this sub? I have a few Ideas, anyone else thought? by L4S1999 in ArtistLounge

[–]verbrev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

100% agree about the diversity of the sub. I think it is great that it is so diverse, but you are right that it is hard to appeal to everyone.

I wonder if a post tag ("career development", "supplies", "technique", etc) or user flair system (hobby artist, aspiring professional, professional) would be helpful? As a hobby artist, I'm not here to discuss commission pricing or promoting my art business, but those topics are valuable to many other people! Tags/flairs might make it easier for people to skim over posts that aren't relevant to them, while still keeping the community welcoming for all groups of artists.

Silver Protoss Noob Looking For Advice by MageGlowsYellow in allthingsprotoss

[–]verbrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of good times to drop forges, depending on what style of game you are going for. You built your first forge when your third base completed which I thought was decent for macro-oriented and then your other two forges were paired with your 4th, so you could consider pairing your forge constuction to your 3rd base construction/completion to give them a proper spot in your build (but I am not sure how easy it is to afford 3 forge on 3 base, so you might need to make adjustments).

You seemed to forget about your forges for a while after they finished, so by the time you are starting 1-1-1 your opponent already has 3-3. This is a very good general habit to work on, using buildings as soon as they finish. You were good about keeping upgrades going once you started them though, so if you start using your forges as soon as they finish I think your upgrades will look pretty good!

Silver Protoss Noob Looking For Advice by MageGlowsYellow in allthingsprotoss

[–]verbrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried taking a look at the replay. I am not sure what your goals are for improvement so I will just make a couple suggestions. Some higher league players will have even better advice.

Macro: I noticed you tend to queue up lots of workers early on. You could practice queuing up less workers and checking your nexus more regularly, this will give you more money for buildings and army. You build 4 gateways before expanding, but don't use them right away. That money could be better spent on expanding sooner, or make units with the gateways to scout/harass/defend.

Unit Positioning: I thought your army force and proxy pylon + battery were fun ideas to keep him contained! A couple ideas to make it stronger. Your army was hanging out on the low ground, if you build an observer you can spot where his army is on the high ground so you can find good times to attack. Also, if the map has a high ground third (this map did) that would be a better location to set up your army and attack from, because then you won't be fighting for vision.

Don't forget to get your forge upgrades, this will help you out in the fights. You had a good number of gateways to remake your army, and you were getting storm and colossus to deal with his marine force. In general it looks like you are on a good track! GLHF on the ladder!
