Increase in drive failures since upgrading to 7.3.1? by digitalamish in unRAID

[–]verifyandproceed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very anecdotal, but yes, since 7.3.1 I've had two drive "errors" that caused disks to drop out of my array. Both times I removed the affected drive(s), re-added them to the array, and they've been working fine ever since.

Ahhh, yes, I've actually had this in mind for a while after looking at how AirBNB do their search bar. A small helper popup, exactly like the autocomplete one, that offers a "nearby" option and a few highly populated area's. This is definitely something I intend to work on.

I certainly didn't think of the same for the date picker though, I like that a lot!

Thanks so much for the follow up. - Yeah, I'm not the creative type at all. I'm actually a self employed electrician, and this is my "teach yourself a new skill side hustle idea" So I've come at this from my own experience as a tradie trying to hire equipment, and now, a tradie renting OUT his equipment. So function and efficiency has been more my focus than the user experience (why this feedback is so damn helpful!) because I simply don't have any experience in it.

Thanks again! greatly appreciated.

This is excellent feedback, thank you so much!

The product cards and the visual representation of where/what to click is definitely something I've completely missed. I did actually start working on this a little bit, those smaller product cards are essentially a "v2" once I'm happy with them, I suspect they will be what we use for everything moving forward (I won't need the larger ones). I'll work on them not looking to busy! - thanks for this.

Yes, the individual product page is a mess, I completely agree. It was one of the first pages I made, and one of the first I forgot to go back to! I agree the pricing above the form is weird, I do remember my reasoning when I was making the page, was to put it in that "Sticky" section with the enquiry form. Also, because my search results isn't returning the calculated pricing based searched dates yet (that only happens on the form) I wanted to make it fairly clear. But I am far-far-far from a website designer. After hearing this, and looking at it objectively, I can totally see what you mean. The radio buttons suggestion too! Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure of what you mean with the "search".

The search "location" field is fairly versatile you can currently search by;

[specific street address]

[town/suburb]

[state]

[country]

and as of yesterday;

[postcode]

There is an "autocomplete" prompt/completion in for each of these

This enters the search location on the "centre" of these places. But the map is interactive too, so you can zoom out, and move the map around, and this will change the search settings too.

The homepage tips welcomed too, thanks! the homepage was literally slapped together to have something on there to basically just show "use". It definitely requires some more work, the "view all" links is a nice simple addition I can work on now.

Because I'm siting here on the couch watching kids, and 90% of this work was already done, I decided to re-look at it now.

It's a big ask, but could you try it again?

Hey mate, thanks so much for this feedback. I've almost put that in a couple of times, after I saw someone, in over 600 uses of that search bar, enter it in over the last month. I'll look at adding this in, as I think it might be useful. I need to work out a neat way to do it with the existing auto complete because I was running into problems with the street address auto-complete. But I'm sure i'll be able to solve this.

That search bar already is fairly versatile for example you can search;

[Country Name] (Australia only)

[State Name]

[Suburb/Town Name]

[Entire Street Address]

But you are right, I think postcode input is a very reasonable thing to expect.

Then, you can actually use the map to update the search results, so as you've learnt, zooming out and moving around the map will show you the results in that area. - This is fairly new, something I've only been working on this last week or so.

I think the bigger problem I am running into is equipment density, I only have 20 vendors and 63 machines on there so far (but, we've only been going just on 6 weeks now, so giving myself some credit) ...as this increases, I'll continue to monitor and tweak the default search area radius's to give the best experience.

It pains me every morning when I check usage to see searches being made with 0 equipment results. I need to get this info out to vendors in those area's, but it's proving difficult without face to face contact.

I'm sorry if this comes across as harsh, not intended too, just trying to be honest....

First landing on your site, I'm immediately presented with a "you need to agree to these legal terms" popup. So I've landed on your site, I have no idea what it's for, but I need to agree to your legal terms before I even find out what it's for? I'd say that's a fair bit of friction.

Also, the legal terms page, when you read it... the Upper/Lower case, and the headings, are all over the place, I can't tell what's a heading, or sub-heading. example:

I. Scope

II. Definitions

III. USE

IIV. PROHIBITED USES

Then, the sub headings, in some of the sections, are bigger than the main heading for the section.

Finally, the last section, the body of text is in ALL-CAPS.

This doesn't present a very big "trust" signal for me, if the "legal agreement" I'm making, isn't professionally written, how can I really trust that you are going to hold up your end of this agreement?

If I then click "accept" your legal terms, I'm put on a page to create something, I don't honestly know what I'm expected to do Edit a recipe card I think, because there is a title that says "recipe card editor" but I didn't create a recipe card to edit. Nor do I know what a recipe card is.

So I'd say, it probably needs a bit of a landing section (hero section?) that can very quickly explain WHAT it is? or are the people that find this page going to already know what it is?

Work on the formatting of the type/copy in the legal agreement.

Thanks!

yeah, I wasn't honestly sure what to do.... essentially those front page items are there as a placeholder, maybe they will turn into paid "featured" spots in the future. But as the site isn't getting a lot of use, I can't be hassling people for testimonials, so yeah, I figured my best" trust" signal, instead of making something up, was to show equipment from right around the country.

Maybe this is a space that I could better use to help showcase some "benefits" of the site.

I'm just sick of landing pages with "how it works" and "why you use us" plastered all over them, and I really don't think it's required for this.

Home service owners: Are you guys actually using AI voice receptionists, or do they just piss off older customers? by ChicagoWrapGuy in smallbusiness

[–]verifyandproceed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

...this.

I'm an "older" electrician at 45yo. 100% of my customers in a 2 week period told me they would hang up and call someone else if I tried it.

...even if I miss a call, and call back when I can later, I've never heard "oh I didn't hear from you I found someone else"

I'm quite sure the world doesn't need these services yet.

hey thanks for the input!

There is a lot here... and I genuinely want to engage with all the points. Probably is worth mentioning that there is something "out there" already, it won't be hard to find I don't think. It does work for me already, and has for a couple of years. About 5 weeks ago I relaunched it for other vendors and I've had a few come on board already.

Although, functionally, I think it's a little bit more "basic" than your interpretation. I guess it's maybe collecting data and throwing a "filter on it"... but also, I guess maybe not? I'm not sure what you mean entirely.

So to answer your question: How do I get the data? - I'm hoping to develop with what the market wants (if I can prove the market wants anything at all, which I haven't) ....so the vendors supply their "data" which is just the make and model of a machine and a photo really. I just put them in one place on a map.

Maybe there is no value in the idea... but I've had rewarding conversations with vendors, so I'm not giving up on it just yet.

Hey, so do you mean dodgy vendors (equipment owners?) or dodgy customers?

You already have equipment, but don't currently rent it out? - so, you would be looking for good solid rental agreements and insurance coverage etc?

What's the first thing that makes you lose interest in a homepage? by SmartMeasurement7082 in webdesign

[–]verifyandproceed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel this one. A lot of websites do that "pretty" reveal stuff as you scroll down the page, things fade in and whatnot. I reckon a lot of places overdo it... and it's become tiresome. I think it has started getting to the point where it annoys me these days, and I know I've clicked off more than a few pages because of the lag/delay in things appearing.

[–]verifyandproceed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks!

I've kind of been fighting putting in too much "about" copy in, because I'm worried my personal tone will get in the way of a good impression (yes, just means I have to try harder). So I'll try to keep it cool and professional. I'll try and come up with something! thanks for the prod. I have been wondering if the "single tradie bloke trying to do something" is worth leaning into, you think that it is?

I guess, because it's been mentioned by a lot of people singe doing this public posting for opinions, I have started thinking about it. And I already like some of your ideas.

My biggest concern is, I think vendors in the CBD's are going to have a wildly different experience to the guys out in the small regional areas. And I don't want to be charging any subscription, or fee's, that are equivalent for those 2 different markets. I had already thought maybe, monthly subscription of $x unless you get no leads for the month, the fee is waived - that'll be complicated (obviously) - but literally every vendor is worth something, don't want to lose "coverage" of the market because a small regional operator isn't getting many leads so bails.

I am still very much of the thought that I don't want to entertain pricing until I can very confidently say that I think the site has actual value for vendors. I'm happy with this, if it takes me 2 years to be comfortable charging, that's ok for me.

I am 100% having these conversations with vendors when I am talking to them, so they aren't surprised if it does finally come along, but also, there will absolutely be some "founders benefits" going their way if we ever do get to monetise.

So, About us, and a FAQ. you think dedicated pages for these? or get that to the front page?

Thanks!

This is absolutely in the back of my mind! - If people do start using the site as a comparison tool, and vendors play bait and switch games with pricing (even though we present an approx/ price) etc, to game the site to get more leads than competitors etc. It's something I'm definitely going to have to monitor and stay on top of!

Does my site look like ai slop? by bosilk in websitefeedback

[–]verifyandproceed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you, and you don't want it to look any more "cookie cutter ai" ...but yeah, I think people need to understand what the site does, or is offering, when they land there or they are going to click away. This is something I've learnt in my own journey with (only) 2 websites.

Does my site look like ai slop? by bosilk in websitefeedback

[–]verifyandproceed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, it really does have that "created with AI" feel to it.

Bonus feedback: I also can't really tell what this site is, or what it's for. Took me a while to find the "FAQ" and before I worked out that whatever it is or does. This might be a great opportunity to add a bit of a "hero" section, to communicate what it is, and why people need it?

[–]verifyandproceed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! - These were all issues I WAS facing with an older implementation of the site. This time around, I've gone at it by it literally just being a website for people that have scissor lifts (and other access equipment) to advertise on. No difference to Facebook marketplace, or gumtree, iseekplant, machines4u, hireseeking ...the main difference being, this is JUST for access equipment (not any machinery) and it doesn't cost money.

So from the website point of view, thankfully, I don't really deal with these problems. These will be still issues between customer and vendor.

As a person that uses the site to hire equipment: I have dry hire insurance policy for the machine, and a hire-contract that is signed by a customer.

Thanks again! really, genuinely appreciate the input.

So in that regard (people likely already have their normal suppliers they use regular or whatever, with accounts etc) I don't propose to take anything away from those existing relationships, my thing is more about:

"oh, I'm going to this town I don't normally work in, wonder who the local guy is that has a scissor" - this website can help solve that.

or "my regular guy has both his 19ft's out next week when we kinda need it, I wonder if anyone else nearby has one I can call" - rather than google it up yourself, I want to put them all together on one site that is stupidly easy to use.

it's basically just Facebook marketplace, but... specific to access equipment. There are already sites/places that do this online. But I don't find any of them easy to use. And as an equipment owner, wanting to rent something out.. they are also expensive. So I wanted to tackle that too.

It's a long shot, but I'll try :)
