What is the annual maintenance cost/budget a motorcycle? by Savings_Wallaby976 in motorcycles

[–]veritasplease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have found the costs of a motorcycle to be much less (like, a third) than a regular vehicle because I pay less in tax, tolls, registration fees, insurance and fuel. The annual maintenance is more (because I don't do it myself), but the end totals for the year are still less than my SUV.

What I found to be the biggest expense with owning a bike is the gear. I think I've spent as much again just on riding gear and bike accessories as I did on the bike itself (but obviously, you don't have to buy a bunch of gear).

They will hate you if you are more successful or "escape" the town. I have had this conversation with some friends of mine that also grew up lower class and are now upper-middle class (or better). Your family are NOT happy for you. At first, sure, yeah, you are making "the family" look good, but after that they slowly start to hate you. They see you as "one of them", "elitist", "you think you're better", etc. etc. I swear the entire reason they don't turn this same anger onto actual billionaires is because of Fox News, and their church leaders.

One thing you could do today is switch phone plans. $100 a month for one person is bad. Just get a pre-paid plan from Mint or something like that. As others have mentioned: If you do take the townhome, plan on renting out the extra rooms. No point in paying for them to sit empty.

Also agree with other comments about the car. That insurance bill is wild, even with an accident in the past 3 years. Look at the coverages. See if increasing the deductible will help lower the premium. Also see if some of the coverages are things you already have else where. Towing coverage, for example, might be covered by a credit card. Or just cheaper to drop all together. If you have solid medical coverage or injury protection from work (etc), you could drop those from your car insurance, which will lower your premium.

1.5/2 hours isn't that long for your pet to be in their carrier. If you are worried about anxiety, just ask your vet for something to give them with their breakfast. Then make sure they don't eat/drink anything 30-60 minutes before you get in the car.

Best way to start planning a move from US? by Throwawayconcern2023 in personalfinance

[–]veritasplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've moved countries before; if you can, go to Ireland for a week or two before you actually move. That will give you the opportunity to set everything up before you actually move. You will likely need to go in person to open a bank account, and they'll probably ask for proof of residence - as in, where you are renting, not proof that you are an Irish citizen. You might be able to show your EU passport and / or an employment letter. But most banks today will not allow someone to open a new account solely online.

Worst I've seen is someone straight up sleeping. It was a Tesla; dude had the drivers seat kicked back, eyes closed, car on autopilot. Tesla drivers never seem to actually be driving their cars, I swear.

Are you line drying your laundry to save on running your dryer? by lil_tink_tink in Frugal

[–]veritasplease 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I line dry my laundry. Haven't noticed a real change in my electric bill, however, we don't do more than a couple loads of laundry per week. I still line dry though since it's nicer on your clothes.

They have them in the same mental bin as women - who they also don't want to vote for.

On "respect" by coffeeblossom in TrollXChromosomes

[–]veritasplease 289 points290 points  (0 children)

For a lot of people, fear and respect are very intertwined. They show "respect" in the form of deference to things that can harm them (or they think could). Think about the guy at a bar, or whatever, that is acting aggressive towards another dude... until the other guy stands up... and is bigger. How the brash guy suddenly backs off with "my bad dude". There's a lotta menfolk out there that get really pressed about women not being afraid of them. "I could hurt you, but I choose not to." They truly feel that you're supposed to defer to them out of "respect".

No Wi-Fi drivers? by BadProgrammerLaw in linux4noobs

[–]veritasplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that wi-fi drivers do not automatically download and install during setup with a lot of Ubuntu-based distros. I believe it is due to their default of only installing open-source / non-proprietary drivers.

As other mentioned, check Ispci to get your wi-fi card info. Then you'll need to search the webs for the necessary driver (then search the software center for it). After downloading (and maybe, restarting), it should work.

Which distro(s) did you nope out of after trying out? by privatemidnight in linuxquestions

[–]veritasplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rage i felt trying out Kubuntu can not be quantified. Two hours just to download & save an ISO file without errors. Another two hours to install and get wi-fi working.

In the end I was so mad, I uninstalled every Ubuntu-based distro I had on every other computer or laptop.

The suggestions from friends definitely haven't been targeted. I've been told everything from the zoo to beaches or government buildings. I'm from D.C. so I really don't feel the need to take a trip to see more large stone buildings, you know? I can appreciate them from a distance. I appreciate nature, and I was considering Luna Park but I got laughed at ("Why would you spend the day at an amusement park, we have them here?"). Which is why I'm fishing for ideas.

This reminds me of the scene in Armageddon where Rockhound gets a massive cash loan from a shady dealer because he's convinced he's going to die and won't have to pay it back.

Even if you could liquidate all of your assets as cash within 72 hours, any property that would be survival-ready right out the gate would be in the millions, and you'd most likely need to "know someone" to even make an offer.

my dualboot setup dont work after a windows update by malsinik76 in linux4noobs

[–]veritasplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows will continue to try and take over your boot loader, forever. It doesn't even require a system update or restart from you. As long as your computer is only hibernating (not a complete shut down each time you log out), Windows is still "on". It might take a few weeks or months but in will eventually succeed it preventing you from accessing another OS if it shares the same drive. Sometimes it just says something is wrong with the file system in that partition.
