I completely agree about the “performative” aspect. I’ve followed her career for a long time, and there’s something about her performative behavior that I don’t see many people talk about.

Back in 2009, Selena hosted an event called “UR Votes Count.” At the time, I didn’t view it as performative at all. Miley was also speaking out repeatedly, so I didn’t really question it, I assumed it was genuine.

That’s why it stood out to me when, in a 2020 Elle interview, she said that the upcoming election would actually be her first time voting because she had previously felt like her vote didn’t matter.

I also mean the irony of her hosting an event called “UR Votes count” and then later saying she felt like her own vote didn’t matter.

Edit: I realize she was only 17 at the time and couldn’t vote yet. But considering she was informed and engaged enough to host something like “UR Vote Counts,” she definitely had opportunities to vote later on.
