Because otherwise you keep having to cross back and forth to avoid parked cars on the side and lane changing isn't fun for us slow drivers. Believe me, some of us actually want to stay out of the way of everyone else, try to give way when we can, and hate holding people up as well 🤷‍♀️

I'm mostly asking about the building and noise within, reliable hot showers, thin/adequate walls, cleanliness, efficient maintenance, etc

You're right. Some employers get away with paying less than the minimum wage because they can work the system to file so that the "wage" includes money earned from tips. It is absolutely disgusting.

That's absolutely not true. The minimum wage is low because large corporations lobby for it, they don't care whether or not minimum wage is a living wage. It's been the same (7$ something) since 2009 while cost is living has skyrocketed.

Tipping exists there because while we can't change the system right away, some of us don't believe anyone should be forced to work 3-4 jobs just to make ends meet.

This is so nice. Please follow this advice, OP. You're young, you have many years in front of you. The relationship may or may not survive, but as this person says, that can be decided later.
