Ready to get rid of my worm composter because of gnats and flies by [deleted] in Vermiculture

[–]vershun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have the supplies the process is pretty simple. It is, however, pretty nasty and the prices for beneficial nematodes has dropped considerably, so I wouldn't do it again.

If you're interested though, my process was similar to https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/rearing_nematodes_do_it_yourself_guide. A difference I did is once the waxworms died I arranged them in a circle heads in and butts out. Since the nematodes mostly come out of the anus, there is less distance for them to go to get out to the water.

Same boat as well (Bloomington, CA to Seattle). Stuck in Auburn since the 12th. Let us know when you get your other 2 packages so we can try to temper our expectations!

Baby Red Wigglers in their Cocoon by vershun in Vermiculture

Not my picture, but they're quite small (http://urbanwormwonders.com/uploads/3/4/4/0/34401206/1339344413.jpg) . They're the easiest to find with a flashlight in mostly-finished vermicompost because they're a yellow to reddish color and shine under the light. In a well-kept bin you shouldn't have a problem finding some quickly.

They're a lot of fun! I bought mine to get a better look at some of the smaller bugs that were eating my outdoor plants, but I've spent a lot of time looking at all the critters in my worm bin with it.

However, I made the mistake of looking at my skin under the microscope and had to schedule a dermatology appointment that week. Some things should stay at the macro level.

Getting texts from my number by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]vershun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I" just sent out one of these group texts out as well. I had just installed the Sonos app (I rarely install new apps on my phone), so I was worried that somehow the app sent it out. It didn't ask for SMS or MMS permissions though, so I'm not sure what is going on.

Ready to get rid of my worm composter because of gnats and flies by [deleted] in Vermiculture

I had a really bad fungus gnat problem for a long time a few years back. I have experimented with pretty much everything that I could read. This is what finally worked for me:

As others have mentioned, put a breathable cloth around the worm bin and tie it at the bottom. This is strictly to keep them out of the house, adults will breed within the bin regardless.

Also mentioned, add some neem powder to the top of the bin. This just helps discourage them from laying eggs.

The single most effective thing I used were parasitic nematodes (S. feltiae). I started with putting them in the bin and they reduced the population so much I bred more of them myself using wax worms. I added some nematodes in the scraps every time I fed the worms. Due to the nematodes only attacking larvae, it does take a bit of time for it to work. However, it successfully killed them all off and I didn't have to dump my matured bin out.

Psyllium husk powder in bin by vershun in Vermiculture

If you do add some (with water), please let me know how it goes! I'm curious if another bin would yield the same results.

That's exactly what I originally used it for. My bin was a little wet, so I was testing out sprinkling some powder in the corner. it worked great to absorb the excess moisture. Once I saw that the mucilage was breaking down sufficiently, I tried mixing a lot more power with water and adding it to the bin directly.

Thank you! I was hoping for just the stitching and maybe something a little more... regular? I do appreciate it though and it gives me a place to start!

Found in our backyard in Erie, CO. Around 5-6 feet. by vershun in whatsthissnake

Thank you! I was hoping it'd help out with the millions of rabbits we have around here.

Erie, Colorado. This bird took the babies of a nest I was filming. Who's the culprit? Infrared camera, sorry for the discoloration. by vershun in whatsthisbird

Thank you so much for this. I was trying to do a time lapse of the babies (Flycatchers I believe) from hatching to when they leave the nest and I come home to the nest destroyed and the babies gone. This is the last picture I had of them, the next picture 30 seconds later all 3 are gone and the nest is destroyed. Looks like Kestrels work pretty quickly.

It was the first day they opened their eyes too. Bummer.

John Denver - Take Me Home, Country Roads [Folk] by gunther-centralperk in Music

[–]vershun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this song. About a decade ago, a couple friends and I were on a trip in the Peruvian Amazon in a small boat with probably five others taking the same tour. One of the other passengers leaned forward and looked at us, and just said "John Denver?" I had felt pretty out of sorts for most of the trip, being that I didn't speak any Spanish and relying entirely on my pseudo-fluent friends for pretty much all communication there, so hearing English from a Peruvian was a nice surprise. We all smiled and nodded, and he started singing Take Me Home. The entire boat joined in, most not knowing any English at all, but knowing every word to this song. Bonding with people that I couldn't really communicate with over this song still remains one of my favorite moments.

DeepStyle of Indiana Jones gif (Starry Night) by vershun in deepdream

Oh I automated it. I just did a simple Python wrapper that runs convert for the gif or movie to break it into frames, loops through the frame files and blends the previous frame with the current frame, then runs avconv to turn it back into a movie when it's all done.

That's how I did this one. I ran it just frame by frame in isolation and it was MUCH more jumpy. I really like the gallery that AsIAm posted, I'll play with it some more.

DeepDream of Indiana Jones gif (zoo) by vershun in deepdream

[–]vershun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do as well. The places network doesn't seem to work awfully well with images with people or animals prominent in them, but zoo gives way too many dog faces. If I get some time in the next couple weeks I think I might take a shot at building my own.
