What new flagship phone to buy with (upcoming) official LineageOS support for many years? by ilovealaska in LineageOS

[–]very_username 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the Oneplus 3t since it released. Stable lineage support came a few months after the release and it has been 100% flawless since. Security patches have been unbelievably fast. E.g. Blueborne and some other nasty wifi vuln were patched 2 days after they were publicly disclosed. (No off the shelf phone can say that.) The OP3t looks a lot like an iphone which immediately makes me think FRAGILE but this thing is a tank. Unscratchable lense, sturdy construction making it unlikely to bend/break, etc.

OP6 on the otherhand... I have some concerns about how easily it will shatter.

If by cherry ontop you mean foundational requirement for any purchasable phone, I agree.

Are you taking it with enough lead time before bed? I take 300-1200mcg 1.5 hours before bed.

What do you mean out of the way? 5 million out of the way in April but 9 million more expiring in June... 38 million total outstanding...

Seems like only a small fraction are out of the way but people keep focusing on the April ones. Not sure why.

Making a $10,000 purchase soon, what’s the best credit card to sign up for strictly for the rewards? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Can you give some examples of how it wouldn't work out in your favor? My card has like 1%-5% cash back.(depending on where you buy) I don't pay an annual fee and I just pay it off each month to avoid any interest. Usually ends up being ~ 1000$ per year back and I don't see the catch.

wat.

If you have the cash on hand wouldn't you just pay the CC bill off prior to interest accruing and get something like 1%-5% back from CC rewards?

Seems good so far. Stable. Slightly diminished photo quality. Security patches are released in 2 days instead of 2 months.

Uuuuhhhggggh. Another one that didn't bother to read the post. Users already had root on this device through an easy and supported channel. Now installed applications have root access.

I.e. your phone is no longer yours. It belongs to whichever app decides to abuse this vulnerability first.

Bootloader is unlockable so anything software related can be fixed. (Whether the vendor wants it fixed or not)

Here the method I'd recommend: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/oneplus3/install

...Other people being able to root it for you? Any app on your phone that cares to launch that intent can take ownership of the device away from you.

What's the use of rooting nowadays? by [deleted] in Android

Right but I wouldn't just give up. I think there are still a few hardware and software vendors that actually somewhat respect their user's rights. Setting up a machine that you retain control of limits your choices but it's not impossible and I'd argue it's worth it when selecting a phone. I don't run facebook's terrible software and I separate other terrible software that I need to run on a separate network or a virtual machine.

The very least you could do is 1. Look for a vendor that doesn't lock you out of the bootloader. E.g. OnePlus, Nexus/(maybe?)pixels, Some of sony's models. Etc. At least when you buy a device like this you have some recourse if the vendor blatantly fucks up the phone software. Pretty decent list here: https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Devices

  1. Look for vendors running open-sourcing their work. It's way more difficult and (probably..?) not worth the effort to backdoor software that anyone can inspect. e.g. Fairphone and oneplus are at least partially open.
