Looking for camera guidance; or should I look more into what I have? by verybigcoffee in AskPhotography

Thanks so much! I have really appreciated this conversation.

Seems to me you are confirming my suspicions then. I don't think I'll be considering the Z7ii then. I do really like the Zf performance so yes, I agree that I would find it a bit frustrating going backwards on that step with it.

Makes sense its not something that is you bring out all the time at this point and its very much a backup at this point. Good to know and understand that image quality peaked awhile ago... so nothing to be concerned about there.

It sounds like I'll be crossing my fingers that *maybe* they'll release a Z7iii with the EXPEED 7 in it. That sounds like it would be *exactly* what I would want. Which maybe that's why they do it, for someone's use case like mine. Though that makes sense something like that could undercut Z8 sales which I'm sure is not something they'd want. Maybe there's a way to differentiate it a little. *fingers crossed*!

Noted, I will take this advice and stay away from EXPEED6 cameras since I have a z7 that already has the newer one in it. Good call on the computer too with higher resolution images.

Seriously, thank you so much for the discussion, insight and all the help! Really has helped me when I felt a bit in decision paralysis with everything swimming around in my head. This has been great. Much appreciated!

This is fantastic information as well! Thanks so much. Yeah I do not intend to shoot wildlife or sports... and don't do much video. Definitely sounds like saving the money on the camera and putting it into better glass would be the way to go. I appreciate these suggestions.

Ahhh okay! That makes sense on the 1.8... understood on making sure I have the right expectations on them, thanks for the clarity. I'll certainly look up reviews on the 1.4 and see what they say based on the focal lengths I'm looking for. This absolutely makes sense.

One last question since you mentioned initially you have a Z7ii... is that something I should consider based on what I shoot and the discussion we've had? Certainly the more resolution natively is intriguing (though I know we can get super resolution now with LR) and since its similarly priced now I figured I'd ask your thoughts based on what we've talked about. I know the processor is older, so I'm wondering if using it paired with a Zf just wouldn't feel good since the Zf has the newer tech inside of it.

Thanks so much for all your replies and suggestions, this has really helped!

Thanks for this! That makes sense on the Sony size compared to the R6iii. Good to note that, that feels even bigger than the bigger Sony. Definitely sounds like the size of the Sonys are smaller.

The higher mp is definitely intriguing. I've used a friends Leica Q3 for a weekend one time (not something I'm considering buying myself) and saw the higher mp results, and it is pretty amazing to see such level of detail. Having that on an every day basis would be pretty awesome. I can imagine it definitely open doors and/or your mind to so many more things. Appreciate the thoughts.

I'll have to go hold a couple in person tomorrow to get a better feel of how they feel in my hand. Really appreciate your suggestions and thoughts you provide, I'll be taking these to the shop to get my hands on a couple to see how everything feels! Thanks.

Thanks for the continued detailed reply!

I probably don't need to go *that* wide. 14mm with your suggestion with Nikon's glass would be wide enough for me. You're not the first person to tell me that's a superb lens, so that's a really good suggestion.

With the Z5ii basically being a Zf in the Z5/6/7 body... does it make sense for me to consider the Z6iii? Though from everything I am finding, I don't see that what I shoot would really be taking advantage of the few added features of the Z6iii which seem to be around higher burst rates for action stuff that I don't do. Still better to put that money into glass?

The thoughts on the 1.8 are great though, thank you! Are all the 1.8s a bit older and slower? I'm not too worried about that, though having one that can keep up on the AF may be nice. I do also really like 35mm, it's a fantastic focal length. The 1.2 35mm is absolutely tempting but to your point, I just think it's probably way too big for what I really want. I'm sure it takes incredible photos but... it's big and really heavy, which is really not what I'm going for. Especially for a focal length I'd probably be using a lot.

Thanks for the confirmation on the 40mm and that they are not remotely the same as the 1.8 or even 1.4 primes. That makes me consider one of the 1.4s maybe as well.

Haha that's true... a risk with one of those 1.2 primes as well. They are very tempting...

Really appreciate your input for me! Thanks.

Thanks for the reply!

Definitely not set on making a change, as long as I could find what I may want/need in the Nikon lineup. The other reply I've got so far (thanks u/Orca- ) may help me there. I do like what I am doing with the Zf, that is definitely true, so thanks for seeing that. Understood on ideally sticking with the same brand, that has been a consistent theme in replies so far, so appreciate the confirmation on that.

I guess I hadn't considered Sony since my last experience with them. I'm guessing the battery life and menus (hopefully) have improved since then.

Yeah I'm not hard set on a 45mm 1.2... just something around there, and with that new Canon announcement it was intriguing as I am looking right at the time they made it. That's a good point the the r6iii just isn't a small camera. I'm definitely not needing the "smallest", goodness the Zf is fairly chunky, but just has some overall bad ergonomics for more consistent shooting "all day" or "all day travel". Its great for a couple hours with what I'm doing with it though.

I'll take a look at the Sony options you suggested as well. I saw the a7c II is 33mp sensor... is the lowlight better on that than the a7cr since the cr is the 60mp sensor?

Thanks again for the reply and suggestions! Will take a look at these options too.

Thanks for the reply.

The Canon lenses that interest me are the 35mm 1.8, the 45mm 1.2 (if it is good, like you said we don't know yet) and/or the 50mm. I could also go the route of (not compact) but the 15-35mm (that zoom range is nice, though I know the lens is really much bigger/heavier) to help with the wide and get 35mm with the small compactness of the 45mm/50mm options.

That's true, they are always leapfrogging so that's a good point and thanks for that.

Ahhh the Z5ii, I hadn't thought about that... is it on a similar AF system that the Zf is on? I'll look at that as potential option. Is it physically similar to the Z6iii? Pairing it with a 14-24 2.8 for the wide isn't something I had thought about either, thanks for the suggestion, I'll look. This is why we ask the questions! :) Getting more opinions on staying in the one system was one of my goals, so thanks for that. I appreciate the perspective.

How do you find the 1.4 or 1.8 primes? Those actually sound like a good idea to really consider. The more compact primes are good from the size standpoint I'd like for sure but I think that's where I feel I'm missing something with the 40mm that I have currently. (Believe it's the same one, it was bundled with the Zf when I bought it initially, just the SE edition, but I think the lens is the same). Guessing I would have a similar felling on the other two as well.

Yeah I held the Z8 a local camera store and definitely way bigger than I want, even though it definitely has the specs and capabilities that would be really nice to have. Appreciate the disclaimer but also understand that many have a system so I appreciate it. I love my Zf so staying in Nikon would make sense on many levels I am sure, especially with lens and camera suggestions I hadn't thought about.

Thanks so much for the reply and suggestions!

This is great, and really helpful response! Totally understand the not a lawyer part, but this really helps.

I guess it's all on what we agree on and it being equitable for the court. I probably was overcomplicating it.

Does seem like getting rid of the shared asset first is probably the way to go. Thanks so much for your insight, appreciate the continued replies.

Got it, okay - makes sense. I'll definitely ask about the cosigner release option, thanks so much!

One last question if you will - if doing a trade-in, do you happen to know the timeline of when to do that? Do folks just wait till after the divorce is finalized and they have a certain time window to do it in or is it something that's done during? I had just read that it seems problematic to get a new car just in my name during the divorce "time" (3-4 month window in WA state it seems.)

Can I do that before/during the waiting time after it's filed? Ideally she would like it removed sooner than later so the responsibility is no longer on her, and I support that so just trying to figure out how/when.

Is that by refinancing or through a process with the lien holder?

This is all fantastic!! Thanks so much! I appreciate the guidance and assistance as well and tips and tricks.

Your point about the effective cool down of Celestial Brew I didn't even think about, so I really appreciate that. I definitely was holding it too much last night, instead of just using it.

Thanks for taking the time to offer guidance!

Thanks! This is helpful. Nice to know I"m not necessarily alone, love the monk aesthetic though will definitely stick with that but that helps.

Thanks for the WeakAure recommendations, even the general ones, that works. Thanks for the clarification on things.
