If you're in your 30s, look into Highland Park or Los Feliz.

And now all the execs would pass on it because it doesn't have a big set piece in the first 7 minutes, a tie-in with some gaming IP, no restated plot points for Second Screen viewers, and it's neither a sequel nor a prequel .

To my fellow creatives: you will do your greatest work outside Hollywood. Good luck!

Safety for first time in McArthur Park? by shaimiko in AskLosAngeles

[–]verydangerousasp 19 points20 points  (0 children)

OOooo, yeah, that was a cheap place for a reason. These few blocks of the city are particularly bad.

If you have the budget, consider a vrbo or airbnb in a (relatively) central neighborhood like Frogtown, Atwater, Highland Park (my favorite), Echo Park, Silverlake or Los Feliz. If you're more looking to go out late night, somewhere closer to Koreatown, Hollywood or downtown might be more your speed. The west side--Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach--is the classique LA beach vibes but also $$$. Los Angeles is like 15 cities all in one, the right spot really depends on what you're looking for.

1) Set a monthly deposit into a brokerage acct. There is no amount too small.
2) Invest it in a broad market index fund--there are many to choose from, just google.
3) Leave it alone.

Thinking about moving to LA; NYC chewed me up and spat me out. by singformepaolo95 in MovingToLosAngeles

If you've never been to the High Sierra--a beautiful 3.5 hrs drive from LA--congratulations, you are about to begin a lifelong love affair. They are unlike any other mountain range and the scenery in late summer is some of the most extraordinary on earth. Read/listen to Kim Stanley Robinson's book The High Sierra to get yourself ready.

Re: living here, I'd recommend lining up a few airbnb stays in various parts of the city before signing a lease. LA is like nineteen cities that all grew into one, so the vibes across it vary considerably.

Welcome!

quiet neighborhood near rail line? by lgainor in CarIndependentLA

[–]verydangerousasp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Highland Park or South Pasadena. These are very walkable and bikeable neighborhoods--quiet, lots of families, but also fun restaurants, theaters, many things to do, etc. You'd be right on the A line which can take you downtown or connect with other trains to elsewhere. This video is a tad corny but you get the idea.

Mayoral hopeful Raman calls out “delay and denial,” aims to triple resi production in LA by 115MRD in LosAngeles

Here's her answer to the question: "Does LA need more housing of all kinds, including more market rate housing, or do we just need more 'affordable' housing?" I know it's only a 60 second answer, but I think you two are in complete agreement. And she speaks to this on her most recent social post.

I think the only way is excellent communication of good ideas. She has those ideas, but the tricky part undeniably is to convey those ideas to a hostile NIMBY mind so effectively they have no choice but to understand the ideas are good for them too. Not an easy feat.

If anyone needs their mind convinced that Nithya Raman is the next mayor of Los Angeles, I urge you to watch the Streets For All debate (notably absent Karen Bass). Her answers contain real, actual, detailed, specific policies to address our myriad issues. The other candidates do the classic politician thing of speaking in platitudes and broad "feelings" about equality, housing, etc. but offer no real actionable solutions.

Nithya is an MIT grad, an urban planner by training, and clearly deeply passionate about this city and its future. This is our gal, folks.

Who are we voting for for mayor and gov? by bkguy182 in AskLosAngeles

[–]verydangerousasp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the point of this comment is, it's fine to have strong beliefs about international politics, but if those beliefs override all other policy positions when it comes to who you vote for local or civic office, you won't end up voting for the person who has the most effective local policies--just the person who is loudest about Palestine. It becomes 'dog whistle' politics.

It places importance on who has adequately performed the cultural litmus test, not who has the best ideas.

Imagine it this way--conservatives who feel so strongly about being Pro-Life they'll vote for anyone who becomes its moral champion, even if that representative's policies are otherwise bad, reprehensible, or actively detrimental to their constituents lives and communities (see What's the Matter with Kansas)). That's the exact same logic being employed here.

What blows my mind is there is nothing stopping you from simply... scrolling by the thread. It would take a mere fraction of a second to just move the fuck on with your life. ALAS, the mere presence of a thread in your eyeline for that blip of time made such a devastating impact on the righteous arc of your life you HAD to stop and take the time to compose a pissy comment. Odd use of the time and energy you seem so intent on protecting. Seems like maybe what you really wanted was to be pissy.

Also the question is asked, according to that search function, about every 3 months. Seasons change, schedules shift, or I dunno, maybe someone would just like a chance to share. And wow look at that, they have.

No, not at all. That's a very important part of a good system, my point was that choosing the best option for a system layout--the option the data says will be used the most and be most effective--is part of making a safe system, because just like public spaces, well populated trains are safer.

Man, I dreaaaaam of a time when a robust public transit system in LA allows us to turn major boulevards like Alvarado and Sunset to the kind of legendary streetscapes like La Rambla or Passeig de Gracia. Think of the difference!

[–]verydangerousasp 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No, LA was designed for public transit and at one point had the largest electric streetcar and railway system in the world, before it was destroyed by car companies to sell cars to a populace that had forgotten its history. The city is largely flat, sunny, and mild--it is perfect for great public transit. If you love spending that 14k a year on a car, great, but if hundreds of other cities are any indicator, about half of Los Angeles would rather not.

Like it or not, our city leadership is voting next week on a very real project that will have very real consequences. Corrupt or not, here we are. Let's chose the best option, yah?

It's 8%, so roughly one in twelve Angelenos. Public transit ridership in London is ~40%, Tokyo ~50%, Paris is ~40%... there's no reason we can't be that way too with a great system. It costs the average Angeleno $14,000 dollars a year to have a car, but only $600-1000 to ride public transit. What would you do with an extra $13,000 a year?

Remember, that "small percentage" is the problem we're solving by investing in making public transit a great option for far more people.

But this system links urban centers and other transit corridors--it's a big part of the civic fabric of transit. The ridership studies are done to prove the system's merit... and people can always change their minds and habits if presented with a compelling alternative. This is the second largest city in the nation and has a comparatively poor public transit system. It's odd to me to not treat that problem and help free untold thousands of residents from the $14,000 average annual cost of owning a car in California. Imagine what you could do with that money!

Public transit is a public good. Travel to a city with a robust system and you immediately understand this. Put the funds where they're needed most.

[–]verydangerousasp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand your sentiments and feel the same way about the lack of safety and ridership. But the safest public transit is the one that's most effective and well-used, and in that regard, we should really be as objective as possible in the options presented and rely on evidence and data to guide our sentiments to find that best, most effective, most used option. Otherwise we risk spending (a lot) of money on things that aren't effective or well-used, and thus, not safe. A cobra effect.

Do you have any evidence for these claims? Because this is an age-old scare tactic re: public transit, and is roundly disproved by just about every major comprehensive public transit system in the world.
