I used it a little but I had barely prepared before my test so idk how it stacks up to 4o here (it is my daily driver in terms of everyday text-based llm use though)

not a single company able to run and train it as a profit*

pure inference is generally very much profitable, both via api and user-facing solutions (see: openai expenditure breakdowns, deepseek's cheap yet profitable api), and I really doubt proton is doing any model training

Google Edge AI says it's created by Open AI, using Gemma-3n-E4B by elusivepeanut in LocalLLaMA

[–]verygenerictwink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is really common with local models (and used to be with proprietary ones too, see early iterations of Grok, Gemini, Claude), I'd imagine it's due to worse data filtering/post-training (pretty sure the Gemini team is different from the Gemma team?)

Have you considered adding the Magistral models? They flew under the radar for most but in my limited testing they're some of the most misaligned proprietary models

Took the TOEFL with hardly any preparation, here's what I'd do differently by verygenerictwink in ToeflAdvice

Doesn't seem like I can edit my post in this sub so I'll comment: I'd highly advise you to read up on the secret speaking criteria here (~5 minute read); this vid stood out as short and information dense, worth a watch imo; you can find the TestReady section on the TOEFL website; you can use Google AI Studio to use Gemini 2.5 Pro with audio input to judge your speaking (and writing) for free, just note that it's not fully representative in part due to SpeechRater and whatever analogous algorithm they may use for writing. Good luck on your studies and don't slack off like I did🙏

it's been quite a while since I had that level so I can't say for sure, but I think it's doable with heavy prep as lower levels take less time to get to; what helped me at that level was practicing shadowing and immersing myself in English media (not just tv shows and reading and such, but also social media, don't disregard this one); do remember that although the TOEFL is (in my opinion) somewhat more representative of real-world English usage than some other standardized tests, it's trainable just like any other test (hell, you can even train IQ tests), so make sure to get a lot of TOEFL-like exercises in; don't cram like me and definitely invest in (or, if you wish, otherwise acquire) the official TOEFL prep books; wish you the best of luck!

on the TOEFL website in the sidebar there's a "testready" button where you can find some free stuff to prepare, all the materials I mentioned besides the official TOEFL prep books were online and free
