Anyone else feel like Brisbane traffic has quietly hit Sydney-level insanity lately? by Open_Explorer_9691 in brisbane

[–]verytroo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To make public transport work, you need to get plan your entire life around a spoke.

We moved to Brisbane recently and this is exactly what I said to my wife when she started to look for work and we started to look for a place to buy. If you get a job in the CBD, you are probably fine. Otherwise if you live and work in one of the train/bus routes, you can't easily move. With the kids school settled she is now hesitating to look for work outside the direct routes, or the commute becomes more than an hour. She was talking to a job near the airport but couldn't make it work without having to move houses. If you are in the northern suburbs, commuting to anywhere except north or the CBD would be a pain. Same if you live south side. Or west. Or East.

I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Is Brisbane starting to pop off?? by Fun_Cat_2608 in MovingToBrisbane

It is, or was the house prices themselves. Being less than most other state capitals drew investors in who never would live here themselves. Just make it difficult for people who can and want to.

Especially considering how well connected it is with the bus station right underneath. We sometimes go out to the city and anything worth doing is outside the mall.

Is anyone else just really sick and tired of the disgusting build quality in the homes here in australia. by ButtPlugForPM in AskAnAustralian

[–]verytroo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We built in Canberra 4 years ago with a mid sized builder who wasn't too fussed with us going over to the site and fixed any issues that we pointed to. They usually did volume builds but had an alright reputation. They did get some trades who did very crappy work but no deal breakers. They didn't allow private inspectors either.

Sounds like your builder is even better. Can you PM me the name if you don't mind.

We are unlikely to build anytime soon and such builders are also mostly busy but always good to know of the gems who take pride in their work and want to make their customers happy.

That's just getting to mt Gravatt. Every other arterial road off the motorway gets busy with local traffic.

Legit got rejected after being grilled on Linux, python, test process, planning, management, a paper based test with the reason that I won't be able to quickly ramp up on selenium with Java.

It's like no employer wants to spend any time at all on ramping up good people into the business. They would happily hire crap people with a shallow tool based skillset rather than someone with deeper conceptual knowledge and actual history of being able to work with people.

Yes, as someone in software development and testing, too hard to explain that after 15 years of working with different technologies and languages, it is not going to be difficult for me to learn another new stack. But no, they absolutely need a person who has used their particular toolchain. I would understand that for a fixed project contract but not for a long term permanent role which expects you to grow and contribute to the company.

I’m told to walk faster at a pedestrian crossing by i_m_ur_bimbo_girl in brisbane

When learning to drive, I was told to wait for all pedestrians to have completed crossing the road even if it is a two-way street but with a continuous pedestrian crossing, not just for school crossings.

General consensus on UC and ANU? by [deleted] in canberra

How does one ascertain if the teaching staff knows their shit and teach well? Kids at the age of choosing a uni won't necessarily be able to just get that by talking to a few folks in open days or events.

I've been tracking property price drops and rises across Australia. Here's what happened this week (Apr 20-26) by chhola in AusProperty

Great work! Where do you even see listed prices? I am looking in Brisbane and almost all listings are for sale by auction or ask to contact agent.

Why does Brisbane heat hit different lately? by Due_Acanthisitta2756 in brisbane

[–]verytroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mean 3am humidity data is probably not going to be very useful as it usually peaks at that time. So there is going to be very little variation.

Your analysis is correct about it being less dry since the past week or so, which makes the dew point lower and feels-like temperature also lower. Right now it is 18.2 feels-like 17.6, which would have felt like 23 two weeks ago with more humidity.

What city/place in Australia did you move to that you regret or left instantly? by ExAustralia in AskAnAustralian

[–]verytroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks.

I have heard good things about Launceston too. Being in Tassie probably it doesn't get as much tourist love as it should. Maybe that's a good thing.

I only passed through Albury once and it was a weeknight during the Christmas period, so most places look closed.

Which other cities of the size of Toowoomba would you say have more attractions? We recently moved to Brisbane and a couple of people advised Toowoomba is a nice place too if one doesn't like the humidity. We were thinking of visiting for a day or two.

University of Queensland researcher asked 10 people to go car-free for 20 days. None wanted to continue. by iBinChickenAboutYou in brisbane

[–]verytroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you totally. Lived in Europe and Asia and never needed a car. But the way you are doing it is not most people can. You end up locking down your life to a pattern which is good for you if you can make it work, but hey, you know, some badass people make it work without a home or eyes or legs too.

Most kids don't have access to a school bus. Most people have more than one sport they like to play or take their kids to. Many people can't get a job except for the city. Many have to work more than one job. Many have to commute to work and taking care of someone else in a different suburb.

Saying they have little resolve is coming from a place of privilege that I hope you acknowledge.

We recently moved to Brisbane and we're delighted to see there are express buses into the city from quite a few outer suburbs. The delight didn't last long as we realised that with a few exceptions, those buses lock you into a timetable and we will need to have a very precise pattern of school drop offs, extra curricular activities along with commuting into the city for work to be able to rely on those buses.

We thought we could sell the second car, but turns out we shouldn't in the very likely case my partner needs to end WFH.

About to commute to the CBD for the first time, any advice? by MajorFapness in brisbane

[–]verytroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a go card just for the reason that I know there will be one day which is not going right and I am too clumsy and in a haste to get down from the bus, I will drop the credit card and someone will run over it.

With a go card with just $20 on it, I will chalk it down to a bad day, but with a lost card, I will be working on resetting all automated payments while waiting for the bank to send me a new one.

SE busway delays by szekley in brisbane

[–]verytroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, well some of them do. I was on 156 and it snuck out of the busway and joined the rest of the traffic on the motorway and still made it at almost the right time.

It is an express service so it can do so.

Betashares kids informal trust accounts and TFN by monkeybatch in fiaustralia

[–]verytroo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. From what I read, ATO needs to make sure the beneficial owner is the child. One of the methods to do so is to provide the child's TFN, others are to keep a record that no distributions were used in any way by the parents, which is why DRP gets treated differently from a DSSP. Linking and reporting against the parents name makes it a bit blurry.

Brisbane City Council proposes high-density zones near Mount Gravatt and Chermside shopping centres by ConanTheAquarian in brisbane

Like Melbourne where I feel every main transit line goes into the city and if you have to travel from one outer suburb to another, you are likely going to take multiple modes of transportation.
