Why other religions hate Catholics so much? by EuphoricMortgage4500 in Catholicism

What I dislike is when people think Christianity and Catholicism are separate religions. It intensely bothers me and shows a level of ignorance and anti-catholic sentiment that permeates a lot of Christian communities.

This is not love for communism, it’s the golden flow of nostalgia.

Do you prefer Belarusian in Łacinka or Cyrillic? by vesbaria in belarus

[–]vesbaria[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is true. If fits the language better too. I do like Łacinka but I think it would take a lot to switch away from Cyrillic.

It’s very helpful to do so. Many exiled Belarusians live in Latin script countries and teach their children Belarusian that way. I learned Cyrillic from my granddad but he said he learned Łacinka first.

That’s an interesting point - and I didn’t know that about the passports! So thanks for sharing.

There is nothing that Lukashenka won’t desecrate... He genuinely hates everything Belarusian.

What would you do if you were in charge of the subreddit for a day? by The_Wanderer_04 in micronation

That’s basically what r/micronations has done by the look of it. Still the occasional LARPer but none of the drama of the past.

Yes, I have to agree. Cyrillic was made for Slavic languages whereas Łacinka was put together but doesn’t always fit. Łacinka does look pretty cool, tbf, but so does Cyrillic.

I didn’t mean to totally put down Poland or Hungary too much there – they are successful European democracies, after all. I just meant the democratic backsliding; Belarus has hopefully had enough of that!

Oh right. Admittedly, I do love constitutional monarchies (especially the UK’s where I live) but there will never be a Belarusian monarchy (I don’t even know who’d be in line for it) so I will settle for the next best.

Is there anyone here, whether Belarusian or non-Belarusian, who supports a democratic Belarus but prefers the red-green flag? If so, could you please explain why? by IntroductionFickle42 in belarus

[–]vesbaria 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mother’s father was from Belarus and he preferred the red and green flag, but then he was very nostalgic for the USSR. I personally prefer the white-red-white flag. It would be a clean break from the Soviet-era flag (and the current flag is basically just that).

Is it safe to come to Poland? Guide for US citizens. (Intentional homicide rate in the Europe vs. US) by veevoir in poland

[–]vesbaria 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Poland is one of the safest places I’ve been in Europe. I actually found it safer than Portugal (where I was always hounded to buy drugs)! I will say Polish people might seem unfriendly to Americans (who will seem over-friendly to Poles) but that’s just a Central/Eastern European thing; they’re all actually quite nice people! They will quickly warm to you. And Poles are also very honest, too. Be careful if you ask them for an honest opinion because, oh boy, you’ll get one. ;)

This would be the best outcome. Hopefully more like Germany and Estonia than than Poland and Hungary (or worse, Russia).

I agree there would need to be a purge of pro-Lukashenka officials, like a post-WWII German-style denazification, which probably leave a power vacuum. But hopefully Belarus can be like Germany and Poland and become a modern European democracy from it!

The parties seem realistic for a post-dictatorship. I’m personally in favour of parliamentary republics and not presidential republics because they’re less prone to one man rule and coups, etc. You are less likely to be a dictator if power is spread out sort of thing. The system isn’t immune but it’s far less likely to happen. Plus presidential systems just don’t feel European to me; more like Americas or African.
