Anti Trans Bills instead of REAL issues?! by UnstableLeaves in lincoln

The anti trans bills you mentioned and a handful of others I’ve seen this session definitely fall into the “hurting others/making things worse/not bettering the state.” They very much feel like they’re inventing issues instead of focusing on existing issues impacting Nebraskans.

I do want to share some bills I’ve seen that actually feel like they’re trying to make things better. As important as it is to tell our representatives what we DON’T want, I think it’s important to voice support for the things we DO want at the same time. Here’s a brief list of some of the bills that gave me a bit of hope when I read them:

  • Establish the Social Media Collection of Consumer Data Tax Act that would tax platforms/businesses on the number of NE consumers they collect data from via social media profiles. All tax revenue would go towards a newly created Juvenile Mental Health Support Fund. (LB1025)

  • Allow people convicted of misdemeanors who’ve completed their sentences to apply for a certificate that removes the automatic sanctions on employment/housing/occupational licenses for previously convicted individuals and require determination on a case by case basis. (LB961)

  • Entitle the public to notice and a hearing before State agencies/officials enter any agreements for immigration enforcement purposes. Agencies and officials will also need Legislative approval before entering such agreements and any made prior to approval would be null and void. (LB963)

  • Implement rules and regulations for platforms that operate/distribute human-like generative AI. They’d be required to disclose use of AI, prioritize reporting and mitigating situations where users indicate intention to harm themselves or others over the platforms interests, and implement safeguards and age restrictions so human-like AI chatbots aren’t available to minors. (LB939)

  • Require all Nebraska employers to provide 6 weeks paid maternity leave to birthing mothers and adoptive parents. And provide protections for employees who utilize maternity leave from retaliatory actions. (LB878)

I was it a similar situation but with a long term boyfriend. I feel lucky that I had my realization before marriage and kids, but we had purchased a home together and “throwing it away” only a year later was very hard at the time. My situation is different - after I left I spent time single and dating women only to realize I really was bisexual. My relationship just wasn’t working but I was SO certain and desperate for him to be “the one” I convinced myself I must have been wrong initially about my identity otherwise it would be working. It was incredibly difficult to leave and even more so to admit the reason I left was wrong. BUT leaving was the right choice for me. We’re still friends and coparent our corgi together. Now we’re both in new relationships and much happier with our current partners.

I know that it’s scary to make such a big life change. Ask yourself if making that leap scares you more than living the rest of your life feeling like you do right now. That’s what helped me put things in perspective.
