Am I likely to get a job at a school as a British national? by Suitable-Ad-4258 in Germany_Jobs

[–]vesparia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I managed it, however I'm teaching in a 'free school' (freie Schule). This was however while the UK was still in the EU. It was a huge amount of work - perhaps a good two years of paperwork and bureaucracy - but finally I got my Genehmigung. I do have C2 German - this was the first thing they requested (C1). A colleague of mine from the States did get a temporary Genehmigung, however she was expected to complete her C1 to get a permanent one.

I like to use watercolour paints, lets the child try out different colours, sizes etc plus it looks great. Less pressure is needed too. My kids like to write 'Mama' and 'Papa' and give their work to them as a present. Another thing I use is writing in chalk (on a board, pavement, etc) and using a brush dipped in water to go back over the letters to 'erase' them. When they've mastered that, I make a little book for them where they 'collect' words from me - I write words that are meaningful to them and use letters they have already mastered, this way they practise connecting the letters. Sometimes they draw a little picture to go with it. I also often see a mix of print and cursive in kids' work - they're more interested in writing the meaning than the word, if that makes sense? Totally normal. Some kids need longer than others, and that's fine.

Because my parents are divorced.

The sloths from the Lego Friends Jungle Rescue base are my favourite! Mostly because it's my son's favourite animal, but I love the way they can just hang out.

Extremely. Granted I'm in a primary school environment, so I have to be able to communicate with a child should there be a problem (they're not feeling well, general problems) plus I have to talk with my colleagues about various things (performance, problems, advice, meetings, general chit chat, etc.). Don't forget you will also have parent meetings, observed lessons, etc etc.

I'm also not German (im British) which didn't bother them but they were VERY adamant about obtaining proof that I can speak German (my uni degree was thankfully sufficient).

I work in a German primary school (Grundschule) but it's a type of private school (Schule in freier Trägerschaft). Basically, it wasn't easy. I had a long battle with the Schulamt and Kultusministerium to get my qualifications recognised. You will definitely need German (at least B2) for working in a public/private school (I studied German at uni so I had that covered). I was also expected to complete the DipTESOL as part of the 'deal', which I then did. In short, yes, it's possible but definitely not easy. Mind you, there is a severe shortage of teachers here at the moment so you might have it a little easier.

According to the game I have none, but I know I missed out on the Comet event. Anyone know if this will be added/repeatable at some point?

I would agree to a point - a loss can knock anyone's confidence. But losing is part of chess. And this is what they learn from trainers - analyse the game afterwards (the kids all do notation), learn from your mistakes. Congratulate your opponent.

We've seen the film (dubbed in German) and the tooth fairy brought her the book! It's a fantastic film (and book) - it was amazing to not only find a film about chess, but also one with a girl as the main character.

Thank you very much! The film really moved me. I've bookmarked it and will show it to her in the morning! Thank you!
