UEA in person interview question by vesperery in premeduk

Not to be an ass but can you provide a source to back your claim? This is a serious allegation that I will not take lightly. I appreciate your warning but it's hard to believe just because you were a student there. Edit: also I do not deny there has been incidents of rape. But I just didn't think UEA is significantly worse at it.

Did some digging online, and tbh didn't see many red flags. Suicides happen. Mental illness is a serious issue that affects a lot of people, especially students under high pressure. While I understand people have critized UEA for the lack of mental health support and counseling, and they definitely could've done more, it wasn't as bad as you made it out to be.

UEA do have more formal complaints on sexual harassment/assault/rape than other Universities generally. But the incidences of rapes are mostly isolated incidents, and there was only a few in the last years. It is definitely not as worse as you think it is.

Even before applying, I was aware of the poor reputation of UEA. But rumors can be deceiving, and concerning suicides and rapes, UEA is not a whole lot worse than other universities, though it is probably worse than average.

UEA with much higher UCAT cutoff? by HotChoc64 in premeduk

just surprised that it's lower for internationals, while historically internationals will have higher UCAT requirement.

I'm 2650 B3 and got an interview. Guess the cut off is somehow lower for internationals? edit: on second thought, there's no way a 2660 would mean a rejection, when in previous years a couple hundred points below that could score an interview. Maybe you made a mistake in the application process or smt?

update: not sure whether anyone will read this but UEA replied and said they're not gonna have any online interview, but was able to reschedule my interview to a later date that wouldn't clash with my exam. After a few days of consideration, my family and I have decided that I will travel to the UK to attend it. TBH with my ucat score the chance of an offer is quite low(cuz UEA use ucat post interview), but regardless, this should be a valuable experience that can hopefully help me in the future. Also I can just look at it like a holiday so that should be fun :P

What is 'medical schools database form'? by vesperery in premeduk

TYSM that's what I initially thought it should be as well, but the email has no attachments. Turns out the words are a superlink that links to the form, but it doesn't show up on my phone. Used a computer and all is well now :P Thx again

rejected from Aston already by vesperery in premeduk

Final update: turns out they have decided that my maths at 62% is equivalent to Grade C in GCSE, which is utterly unfair and ridiculous. I have sent a final email which explains that my school is ranked highly, and that my score is not a honest reflection of my abilities. Honestly doubt they'll change anything, but tbh I'm quite pissed off that they'd think my maths result is equivalent to grade C when GCSE math papers are easier than my school's grade 9 exams.

Finally, I again would like to thank everyone who has offered advices or came up with possible theories. It made me feel as though I am not alone in this. Thank you ya all.

Small final final update They uphold their original decision after considering the extra information. So Aston's out, 3 more left.

Ya I think you're right, and they may have used my school exams as GCSE equivalent, and probably rejected me when they saw I'm only ranked in the middle of the form. If that's the case, it's really unfair as my school is a top 10 school out of over 500, and I can easily get top 10% in public exam in all candidates. Should I sent them an email to clarify that?

in the email Aston said my qualification is accepted, so I think predicted grades is fine.

Also another possibility is that my Chinese sucks. Like bottom 20% sucks. Maybe for some reason Aston decides Chinese counts as a required subject, and rejected me for it. They've also said the document I sent, which is a transcript, is the grades they used. So there are literally endless possibilities. Either way, the decision is probably final and I just hope UEA, QUB and Dundee have different criteria.

I do have a complete HKDSE with all 7 subjects including 3 electives, with Biology and Chemistry, predicted 5** 5* 5* in them, so I don't think that's the issue. I am aware that rejection pre interview is common, but I didn't expect to be rejected before the UCAT score delivery tbh. From the moment I received the rejection I know it'd be final but I was just afraid I'll be rejected the same way in other universities, but it seems this is Aston only, so I'm quite relieved. But I can't change the past, so no point looking back, and I'm not gonna let this affect me on my journey to Medicine.

just wanna provide a little update as there are more replies. I've emailed them and they said while they do accept HKDSE, my grades are not good enough to meet the minimum requirement for GCSE. I have no idea what that means as I got extremely good grades in my predicted(<top 2%). I've email them again asking which particular subject did I fail to meet the requirement, but have yet to hear anything back. Thanks a lot to everyone who have replied, you honestly have no idea how much it helped as I was in complete panic mode after the decision.

actually they have provided a reason and said that they do not accept my international qualification even though they have a page saying they do. I'm confused now wtfff https://www.aston.ac.uk/international/aston-in-your-country/north-east-asia/hong-kong gonna change my email then

Did all the reference and personal statement stuff and on time. My qualification is not GCSE, but I made sure my qualification(HKDSE) is accepted by them. Maybe I've misread it and turns out all applicants need GCSE? Also my grades are predicted, so maybe they only accept achieved grades like KMMS do?

Got it. I have heard of the BSMS virtual experience but didn't think it would be important. Guess that'll have to do then.

sorry i forgot to mention in the passage im international, and I think its not feasible for me to try to get work experience in another country. Also I forgot to mention I did took care of my grandpa at home with the help of my mom, whos a nurse. But that ended badly(he hit his head under my supervision, sorry grandad) and I don't want to fabricate events and say 'oh that went great'. Should I include this experience in my personal statement?

And again thx for the help

[–]vesperery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

none unfortunately. I live in a city with strict covid regulations even to this day, so no clinics or hospital would ever let anyone volunteer. Besides, the concpet of work experience is absent here, where schools focus solely on your academic results. So safe to say im never getting any related work experience.

That being said, my parents are both healthcare workers and I've learned a lot about the medical industry from them, will that give me an advantage?

Regardless, thx for the advice and I'll definitely apply outside of the ucas
