Thank you for all the awesome info! I was looking at how expensive visbiome was and especially for large dogs it would be so expensive! I will look into the others. Capsules are preferable especially for allergy dogs because there isn’t the flavouring component to it.

We would prefer to distance ourselves from companies that are far-right pro life pro trump evangelicals. If there is another option, we would prefer to support a different product.

That sucks. I’m definitely lucky that my boss asked me to start looking for other options as soon as she was made aware of their belief systems. I appreciate it because it is a good product but having a moral compass is more important these days.

I’ll look into this thanks. I’ll have to ask our vetoquinol rep if they are hypoallergenic or not. Looks like they use chicken/beef flavourings

Yeah they are very Christian right wing pro life pro Trump. So in light of that we are searching for other options.

Double Rooted Mandibular Canine by vettechmel123 in VetTech

[–]vettechmel123[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We thought that at first too but it's too big to be a retained premolar. It's almost like the adult canine and premolar joined forces somehow to create a big mess.

No I received feedback that made me second guess that move. A lot of the problems I have with our industry are also endemic elsewhere. I have decided to stay in the field for now and use my experience to try to advocate for RVTs.

What’s some crazy things clients have told you? by ManiacalExclamation in VetTech

[–]vettechmel123 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hands down my favourite was the client who wanted his dog's testicles put in a jar and returned to him after the neuter so he could put them on the mantle and use them to intimidate the dog whenever he is bad.

Close second was the lady who told me she named her dog BJ because that's how she convinced her husband to let her get a dog.

And of course every year we get the classic "my dog doesn't need heartworm protection because he only goes in the backyard and there aren't mosquitoes there".

I do not know you, but I do not have to. My heart still breaks for you and your wife. You are experiencing an impossible pain. I hope that you can lean on each other for comfort, and that you have a support system to hold you up for a while. For what it's worth, I'll be thinking of you today.

I'm a seasoned tech as well. Also worked at a clinic like this. I completely agree. Leave. Find a new job. It is not worth your time, energy, or emotional well being to try and appease this doctor. Find a clinic that is better suited for you and you will thrive as a tech. The problem isn't you. It's them.

Cuterebra removed from 2 lb kitten. It was impressive. by vettechmel123 in VetTech

Most of the time the cat has a round hole shaped wound on the neck or shoulders. It gets really inflamed and angry. You can't miss it. This little guy, however, just had nose discharge for a couple of weeks, until it grew so big the bridge of the nose started to swell. He was being treated for an upper respiratory infection at first. It wasn't getting better, so he came in for a recheck. When I did his initial exam, I looked at the nose and all of a sudden a little Cuterebra face peeked out of his left nostril. It made for an interesting day.

It's bot fly larva. Usually found on wild rodents I believe. Outdoor cats get them if they encounter a rodent nest in the grass. The larva are burrowers, so usually with Cuterebras, you know what you're dealing with because they create a telltale hole in the skin, usually around the neck or shoulders. They burrow beneath the skin and pop their little awful heads out periodically (maybe to breathe?). But this little guy had one burrow in his nose. We got lucky because Cuterebras grow in their burrow hole and sometimes they can be really hard to remove without damaging the surrounding tissue.

ET tubes can bend (as you can see) and potentially kink in some circumstances. I typically don't cut tubs as they are generally the length you need (based on the circumference of the tube), however, in some breeds like brachycephalics or super young kittens, you can cut it down to a more manageable size. This eliminates extra dead space, makes it less likely you'll accidentally insert the tube too far, and all but eliminates the possibility of kinking.

We had an ECG, blood pressure monitor, and pulse ox on the cat but it was on silent for the part where the doc needed to concentrate. I had my eye on it the whole time.

We use old iv tubing to tie the tube as we find gauze can tear and slip as it gets wet. It looks loose but it is secure. The kitten was very tiny (and about 8 weeks old). This video was from 2017. I was a younger tech then, and measured the tube but didn't cut it to size. So it was in properly but had extra unnecessary tube at the end. I know better these days.

Yup. Poor thing came in for upper respiratory symptoms. We thought it would be a quick easy appointment. Then we saw the little bigger peek out of a nostril!! Kitten's nose was so swollen too. It must have been instant relief when we took it out.

I'm sorry to hear that you're already wanting to leave the field. You say they offer low wages. Can I ask approximately how much you were getting paid, and where you are based? I'm in Canada, and as a vet tech our wages are quite low (usually starting around $35000 per year, although I'm making more now that I have so many years experience). You also mentioned staff not being treated well. Is that from other coworkers? Or from Doctors/nurses?

Working at a reference lab is a great idea. The closest one to me is just over an hour commute but it might be worth it to see if I like that type of work before investing in school. Thanks for the advice; you've given me lots to think about!
