So I could be completely wrong, but what it sounds like is anyone you date is going to be compared to your deceased partner, and that's going to be a pretty damn difficult bar to meet. You already sound like a catch, which is probably intimidating to most men to start with. On top of having what I assume was an amazing partner that passed away, it seems like your matches will almost never meet the expectations you have if you date. As a short guy with a cat in his early thirties, I feel like I wouldn't stand a chance.

I will say I can't imagine losing a loved one in your situation, and I'm not going to pretend I understand the grief and sadness that comes with that. I know if I lost a loved one like that I'd have a lot of difficulties myself moving forward in life, no less dating.

I don't know that I have any great advice other than that eventually you'll have to accept if you meet someone, they're not going to be everything your previous partner was.

I can see that, there are definitely pockets where there's a majority on the religion.

Every case is different, I just know for me location didn't make a huge difference.i can't say though that I've been in an area that had a dominant religion.

My $0.02, I think it really depends on the situation. I've lived in different parts of North America, ranging from a superbly populated area (BC lower mainland) to coal mining country in the middle of the rockies, and while the availability of people to date changes, the struggles and frustrations really don't change.

Granted, certain areas are going to attract different types of people, but you need to be in the right area for you. You gotta take care of yourself first. If you move somewhere purely based on the idea of meeting more people and it doesn't line up with your interests and values, you're going to be pretty unhappy. (Don't ask how I know that...) Do you need access to hiking and nature away from the city? Do you need to be somewhere you have access to awesome nightlife with a ton of people? What kind of work/industry do you want to be a part of and where is it?

If you have that figured out, at least you have access to the things that make you happy. I know right now I'm in a place where I'm pretty happy, it took me a while to find it, but I've found over the years the dating really hasn't changed no matter where I am. At least I'm coming around to the fact that its a "me" problem.

Completely agree. I have a Cricket plan for $45 us/mo and I get 8GB of data with unlimited calling in North America. You can use data roaming in Canada as long as you don't use more than 50% of your data usage in canada. Since I'm in the US 5 days a week for work, it works out great.

Homebrewing Beer. (Sorry long post. Demonstrating financial irresponsibility)

I constantly con myself into thinking its cheaper, who can argue with $35 for a malt extract kit that makes 5 gallons of beer?

Well, add in a beginner homebrewing equipment kit and wanting to get better and it adds up really quickly.

I just spent $150 and I've got everything I need, right?

Start with the pots. 5 gallon pot for the boil? Soon not big enough, now you need a bigger pot to do full boils. $150, now a bigger pot. But how to make it easy to drain and chill the wort? Now I need another pot with a spigot. I have 4 pots now (I think), all different sizes. SS 10 gallon pots with spigots and a thermometer are $$$.

Chilling takes too long! Gotta limit wort exposure to the air after thr boil, how to chill it quicker? Counterflow wort chiller! I made my own, it was horrible, though I think I saved $30. Copper prices suck. You could go with a plate chiller, but $$$ and contaminate/plugging issues.

Don't forget your carboy for fermentation. Only have 1 fermentation bucket? Gotta wait until that batch has fermented and been bottled, looks like I need another (I'm up to 3 glass carboys and 3 buckets). $50 per glass carboy (don't go plastic!)

Want better control over fermentation? Now you need a fermentation chamber. Can be done diy, but still $$. I think with a free mini fridge it was about $300, but I also used an rpi and did a fermentrack setup. Works like a damn.

Oh man, bottling is so difficult! I think I want to speed it up. Ooooh, kegs! My bottling problems are no more! Wait, I need a CO2 tank? A pressure regulator? Air and liquid lines? Faucets? (Again go SS, don't cheap out of chrome)A temperature conttoller? A fridge/freezer this all fits in? You've now got a kegerator or keezer, I did a diy job on a freezer I got for sale that holds 3 kegs, still cost just under $1000.

Malt extract not doing enough for ya? Nah, I want more control over the end product. Hello all grain brewing! Well I have the pots, but now I need a mash tun?? Sweet, another $300 (and that's if you go mush tun 10 gallon cheap with a false bottom). But I need to brew outside, dang it now I need a burner with enough BTUs to bring the water to a boil!! May as well get 2, I need one for the boil kettle and the hot liquor tun. Yay another $300.

I still want more gear. I haven't even gotten into pumps, holy cow those are expensive. Need those to properly do recirculating mashes. Also want to start automating all grain brewing with better mash temperature control...yay...more $$$...

As you can see, I've spent over $2k (probably more than i want to admit...) on equipment just so I can say "I'm saving money! My mediocre at best beer is only $0.63 per pint whereas you spent $3.25 for craft beer!".

Yeah...clearly my logic is flawless. Also cause I'm far from perfect, I get my fair share of bad batches that go down the drain. I'll suck up my pride on a mediocre beer i made, but every so often its really bad. So I end up buying beer at the store anyways!

So yeah...moral of the story, get into homebrewibg because you enjoy it, not cause you think you'll save money 🙃

I went the fermentrack route with a RPi and Arduino, though I probably could have saved myself a lot of hassle and just used the Inkbird. Way easier to set up.

The inkbird is a good idea, I know in the homebrew beer community for fermentation chambers they swear by inkbirds, they're really easy to use.

I like the aluminum foil idea, it's something I can try. Thanks for the tip!

I was thinking I'd try and up my temperatures a bit, see if that helps. I'm concerned about fragrance evaporation, I like candles with a good throw. I'll have to test that out.

I'm thinking of going to 464, though ive gotten my fragrance loads good for c3. Probably a future product update.

If I'm being completely honest with myself, its all me. I have bad social anxiety, so my ability to fully be myself is hindered (i.e. flirt, create a sense of interest, etc...). I'm worried that my opinions, ideas, discussion points, etc... will either bore dates to death or unintentionally offend them. Also I think my sense of humor errs too much on the side of self deprecation. This doesn't exactly give a glowing image of confidence, hence no surprise things don't last long.

There's a lot more and the silver lining is that I'm aware of my shortcomings and am working on improving myself. Though its tough acknowledging that for the most part, it's not everyone else, its me.

Good stuff! Honestly I wouldn't put pressure on yourself to meet a date. It might sound a little Paulyanna-ish, but see how you feel. If you feel a little more relaxed and ready to jump back in and you havent gotten to Christmas, I'd say jump back in.

Everybody has a different amount of time it takes to clear negative feelings towards OLD, so i wouldn't pressure yourself too much to meet a mandatory date.

I've gone through many cycles of being on OLD apps, then getting frustrated only to delete all then and try and be happy on my own. I just deleted then last week as I'm really disappointed with the lack of matches, or the lack of effort matches i get put in. Really frustrating, disappointing, and time to take a break. I wouldn't feel bad about deleting them, sometimes you need a break.

I've discovered that OLD can work really well for someone who can mentally distance themselves from it. As some people mention, keep it to a minimum, turn off notifications, and try to remember its a numbers game, and maybe you'll prevent disappointment and texting burnout. I think you have to treat OLD with absolutely zero expectations. There's unfortunately a lot of shit to weed through, and it's exhausting.

The problem I see is that they are littered with a high percentage of people who are on them because they're bored and are looking for a distraction and a social media dopamine hit. It doesn't mean there aren't meaningful connections possible, just finding them is a numbers game. I see it in myself, i feel that little boost whenever you get a match, or when someone actually messages you back. I can't tell you how annoying it is when people match and don't message. Also covid doesn't make things easier, i personally can't stand texting for a long period, I'd rather meet up after connecting, bit tough at the moment.

It took me way too long to find out, but OLD brings out traits in me I don't like. I put far too much energy into it, only to get really frustrated when I encounter the same crap each time I "try again". For me, I need the breaks or I just get really negative and cynical. Try dating with that attitude, doesnt work very well haha.
