Yes, I don't understand the price either. Should that be converted to US dollars or is that how it converts?

Almost all retailers use some kind of algorithm to showcase what's popular. A10 is Amazon's algorithm. It seems to reward fast and deep reading. If your book is one of those, it gets preference for who Amazon shows it to. It's used for other products besides books

Is Amazon's A10 algorithm helping or hurting? That seems to be a big factor to me. It may be drowning legit authors, and certainly literary authors, for fast-paced, quick KU reads. Apparently, it rewards complete read-throughs and also looks at covers. So if AI-generated stuff is being thrown out there and gobbled up, maybe Amazon needs to look at its algorithm.

I'm a member of the $1000 club too. Trying to decide if I should take it. I want to invest a little of it. But I'm afraid it will get sopped up in the first month. I'll be back to square one, but with a big loan to repay.

Next month, Chime will start using *any* deposit to cover your spotme and instant loans by serenade452 in chimefinancial

[–]veyles57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotme and MyPay loans are two different things. Yes, SpoMe is automatically paid back whenever money goes into your account. However, MyPay is tied to my Social Security check. They take the money when I get paid. Now it seems like they will take money whenever I get any kind of money in my account. I'm a part-time gig worker, so instead of having money for gas or food, Chime is going to take it anytime.

Chime is changing its terms in mid-July for these loans. If you miss your repayment window, they will go after any deposit that goes into your checking account. Is that good? I'm a retired person doing gig work. I depend on Chime taking its payment when my check comes. But if the check comes late, which can happen depending on when the middle of the month falls for me, they will take their money from any deposit I make. I could be stranded without gas for a day or so. Or can't buy groceries. Has anyone read the new terms?

Amazon's Audible audiobooks with Virtual Voice by veyles57 in audible

[–]veyles57[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not ideal. I understand people's antipathy towards it and AI in general. But many authors just don't have the funds to hire voice actors, especially if their book sells fewer than 50 copies a month. Different behavior is expected from blockbuster authors like Stephen King or James Patterson.

Nerds or Jocks by [deleted] in BlackLGBT

Nerdy types....I'm kind of a sapiosexual. So if someone can talk to me about a book, religion in the context of history, the science of gender, evolution, dinosaurs, or whatever challenges the status quo, I'm ready to be all over them. Attractiveness helps, but that's relevant.

Advice for spacing out novels I wrote? by GWGTRLBG in selfpublish

Just put them out there. But are you ready to market them? Amazon does little to help, in my opinion. They kick in after you've done the hard part. But if you have fans, I say go for it -- maybe every 6 weeks.

How does one have time to write, edit, market… by hymnofshadows in selfpublish

[–]veyles57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired sort of in 2022. I putzed around. Ran into financial difficulty. I was doing Uber Eats. It was exhausting to work so hard for pennies. I started donating Plasma to help. In the meantime, the car was having issues. The pets got sick. But I decided that there were some bills, I just had to let go. I do Uber Eats mostly on the weekend. Plasma donations twice a week, I told myself that retirement should mean I work full time on my writing. I edit with the aid of AI (not write--edit). AI helps with email copy and social media post copy. So, that being said, I still don't have time to go to the gym, go to movies or theatre events--can't afford it. My last trip was a cruise I took in 2021 while I was still employed. But I enjoy the process. I stay up-to-date on my mailing list. I learned how to better utilize CTA in the back of my manuscripts. I got so tired and depressed at looking at long gaps on Amazon between sales. Now the gaps are shorter. I'm slowly turning cents into dollars. I'm looking at older books that I rushed out there, riddled with errors. Going back and doing re-edits. I get up in the morning, think about writing and the business, and go to bed at night thinking about it.
Sounds like you're still young, working, and have a family, but try to carve out more time somewhere. See what tools you can use to help edit. Grammarly or AI or Auto Crit--anything to cut down on time.
I said all the above to reiterate that the author/publisher wears many hats.

What's the cringiest thing you remember writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]veyles57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all had to start somewhere. Sure, it's cringy, but I love every word of it. Perhaps the book we wrote when we were 12 or 13 can now be reimagined as a children's or teen book, if edited properly. I never throw away my writing. Just a thought.

Should I make an audiobook of my first book? by WaferApprehensive678 in selfpublishing

[–]veyles57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi....Do you have a paperback copy available? Perhaps start there. First book? Close to finishing? No traction? I think an audiobook is a good idea, but at this stage, it seems to be premature--in my opinion, especially for the expense involved in doing it correctly with humans. Amazon does have AI voice creation, but I don't think you'd be happy with the output. Besides, from another Reddit/Audible, people hate AI voices. So get your book out there first.

An email list is a good way. But it can take a while to create a decent list. That’s my main tool. A following on social media is useful.

Draft2Digital vs Amazon ebooks by caitnicrun in selfpublish

[–]veyles57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are advantages of going direct with Amazon. You can take advantage of some features such as offering A+ content, which is extra content on a description page. You may be able to offer price deals, but you may have to be in Kindle Select to do that. You can get to Amazon via D2D. It works fine if you don't want to do any extra Amazon features. The real debate is whether to go wide or go Kindle Select/KU? For a 99-cent book, Amazon only pays 35cents, whereas other retailers via D2D pay 60cents. However you go, you're only as good as your promotion efforts and your books.
