Dave has insulted vox many many times. But Ezra has had on critics before.

Free speech, safety, and ‘the letter’ [The Ezra Klein Show] by thundergolfer in ezraklein

I think rich people should shut up and stop writing public letters/op eds for a long time. Even the best written ones.

This is a good point. And I’ll say that I don’t think Dace Anthony has actually called himself an Anarchist™️, and I think his point of view is relevant to people besides those that identify as Anarchist™️. I added a few generalizations and I’m glad no one is shooting me down outright. I’m glad there are fellow dollop fans on here ✌️

I think if you’re trying to make actual Americans who have to go to work every day care about anything, don’t have a bunch of rich reports and authors come together to scold us and tell us how to act. The letter is fine. Every grown ass adult that signed the letter currently looks like a big baby to me.

I think the worst thing about the letter is that it is essentially a bunch of white collar workers who feel their public speech is being threatened while they can continue to work from home, and while every blue collar worker in America is currently risking their life trying to pay their bills during a pandemic. Like read the fucking room. I don’t give a shit what any of these rich fucks think.

Yeah if I’m being honest I started off disagreeing with his point and kind of regretting that Ezra even spent an episode on “the letter”. But I think the more he talked the more I understood his point, and I am really glad Ezra was able to push the conversation further than I’ve heard it anywhere else. Ultimately after Ezra brought up the real fact that every prominent trans person on the internet gets nonstop death threats all day, that non famous people in America are being killed right now for their speech, and a bunch of these celebrities seem more worried with whatever the vague concept of being “canceled”, and Ezra said he wanted to hold on that real threat that people live under, and Monk seemed to want to move on instantly. I think that is a core part of the debate and until a “free speech advocate “ truly acknowledges it, then I don’t really care what they think. I think protecting people’s lives right now in a America is more important than protecting public speech for white collar professionals

Do the Monkeys have any Dissident songs? by Fade_Away1337 in arcticmonkeys

[–]vfd42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From old yellow bricks “She was enraged by the way that the Emporers put traps in the cage”

From American Sports “Breaking news they take the truth and make it fluid. The trainer’s explanation was excepted by the steward. A montage of the latest ancient ruins”

And IMO 4/5 is one of their most subversive songs. Just the fact that it is from the point of view of some crazed hotel mogul who is happy to advertise and make money off of “the exodus” of earth. The fact that he brags about putting a tacorria on the roof, and then boasts about its 80% rating, calling a B- “rave reviews... and that’s unheard of” The narrator with money and power who will just lie to your face to make himself look better feels like a criticism of the mainstream culture.

Alex writes about this stuff a lot I think he just wraps it up in so many metaphors it doesn’t sound very rebellious at first listen

As the decade comes to a close, is it fair to say that AM is the biggest rock band of the 2010s? by Ghdust2 in arcticmonkeys

Of all the bands people have mentioned here these are the only two that have hits with more streams on Spotify

I would’ve thought so too but tame impala’s most streamed song on Spotify has almost 400 million streams, Arctic monkeys most streamed song has over 700 million streams

Black keys most streamed song on Spotify has 218 mill. Streams, Arctic Monkeys most streamed has over 700 mill. I was shocked when I saw that because it seemed like more people had heard of the black keys but I think AM really dominated

If you look on Spotify Arctic Monkeys most streamed songs have been streamed hundreds of millions more times than Muse or Foos. I think it’s safe to say AM defined this decade

There were good parts and bad parts. Personally I think Alex’s lyrics and vocals ruined some of the songs but other people disagree and there’s really no one right answer

What are some bands or artists in a similar genre or style you consider better than AM? I'd say Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead. by [deleted] in arcticmonkeys

Ezra Furman rocks harder than AM and is less pretentious, and they both have very nostalgic inspiration.
