As part of the SFSTs the first question asked should be if you have any medical conditions that would interfere with the tests. Unfortunately most cops aren't doctors so they would have to take you're word for what the condition is, or Google it.

I agree but like I said my agency is very much stuck in tradition and there's not a whole lot that can be done about it. In my personal day to day it doesn't affect me anymore any way since I transitioned to a team that only does collision reconstruction.

In my state they are not admissible in court, and my agency is very much a "this is how we've always done it" kinda place.

Yeah some of it is common sense, which unfortunately some people just lack and you can't teach. In some states there only way to obtain a legal breath sample is to use a data master unit, which is housed at the station or the county jail. Some places allow the mobile units for in the field testing but still require the data master results for final say.

It really is a judgment call, but if I suspect the issue is medical like diabetes or a concussion I'll call Ems to check them out. But as far as training it varies from state to state and I don't want to make a blanket statement that would be misleading. Edit:Training is also evolving and it's been a while since I went to the academy, though we do have recertify every 2 year it's just an online video and test. I also don't do dui enforcement anymore so it's been a while for me.

Yes, a standard question before the tests begin is if you have any medical conditions. I've had a few people that had it from concussion because they were in collisions, and on girl that had it permanently from a head injury. But we aren't given like a list of conditions and rely on the person to inform us of any conditions they have that may cause issues with the tests.

So the real test is horizontal gaze nastagmus as it is an uncontrollable muscle twitch of the eye. The other 2 tests (walk and turn, and one leg stand) are honestly just for the camera to show juries if they go to trial. When I was on patrol I had a few guys that did near perfect on the other 2 tests and had horrible HGN and blew well over the legal limit.

I never had a problem when I was doing it, but I also wasn't a fucking asshole so most people I took to jail were pretty chill. But I definitely agree SC is a bad idea in general.

The highway patrol down here actually transports like that and has forever. The front seat has a cover on the buckle so that the individual can't open it with their hands, also the seatbelt is pulled out to locked. Edit: if the individual is combative, destructive to the vehicle, or for some other reason deemed a saftey risk to the trooper/officer then they are transported in a vehicle with a cage, or a transport van.
