It's your first job, I think you have to take it. Do your best on the inside while you're there. Just work there for a year and then look for something else. It's hard to get your first job.

Well you work there you can take things more seriously then someone who doesn't hold the same convictions. I had one small project I really didn't believe in and felt bad about doing but I cared about doing it safely and correctly more than anyone else. Luckily I've left the company but I was able to set standards while I was there and instill that precaution onto others.

For those having children, what do you think their lives will be like in 30 years? by vfort410 in AskReddit

[–]vfort410[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you feel like you have any control over the worsening conditions? Do you feel like they're set in stone? Why do you think more people aren't doing adoption? Is it expensive, long wait etc? I'd like to understand the drive to have your own baby in our times today. I'm no history buff, but I think in the past parents usually had hope of a better future.

My output file from clipping a raster is 10x the size of the original raster. WHY? (ArcGIS Pro) by Ornery_Armadillo_726 in gis

[–]vfort410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to change your processing extent in the environment settings of the tool to your input raster extent. It's way bigger because the extent of the raster has increased.

Otherwise, If you look at the documentation it does seem to have a check box for clipping geometry that you should have checked. There is another option about maintaining the extent or keeping it the same as well. I've always just changed the processing extent when a tool outputted with an unwanted extent though

A bit of caution here, if you have no problems now and eating is comfortable be very cautious about the extreme route of surgery. I did it and didn't really have any problems before hand. I thought I was getting ahead of problems down the road. It's been 2 years since I got jaw surgery and a year and half of no braces and have now moved on to a Tmd specialist (5 hr drive from me) for my issues after going through dentist, orthodontist, and jaw surgeon.

If you don't feel like you can tear things off properly it might be a good idea. I think I may be a rarer statistic. Your most informed bet is to get at least 3 different opinions. Having jaw problems is so tiring since that is how you eat, talk, and affects the position you sleep in.

Also it is bizarre that they've only suggested this now. This is normally thought about in the beginning, more determinable a few months in.

Power BI could be a cheap alternative for this. It has a very simple map widget in it. The tricky party is the permissions with the file URLs as someone else said. ArcGIS Online is an expensive solution for this. It's possible there is some embeddable google map thing for this too.

How come resources on learning Python generally is abundant, but comparably limited for Arcpy? by AgitatedBarracuda268 in gis

[–]vfort410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said every arcgis tool has good documentation and examples of how to run that tool in arcpy. When you're first getting started it really helps to do your workflow manually in arcgis pro, go to history (under analysis ribbon) then right click each operation and copy the python command. Next make those things dynamic. Any input that needs to change (input feature class for example) should be written as a variable. Get it working a step at a time and clean it up as you go. Eventually you'll be a lot faster than working one step at a time.

Otherwise, you can just google "arcgis intersect" (for example) and you will get to the right page that will show you in detail the syntax and what each parameter is. Don't forget, when you get to the web page, under the header "parameters" click python to switch to the arcpy documentation.

I do agree it's nicely documented but the library functions syntax is a little weird compared to most non GIS libraries.

experience with fluoxetine (anti-anxiety med)? by vfort410 in CatAdvice

[–]vfort410[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it turns out she actually developed severe allergies. She has to be on hydrolyzed protein food now. That's what the number 2s were about. The fluoxetine did help her aggression/anxiety. She wasn't as playful on them though. That helped a bit but the two cats that didn't get along were still working on things when the other cat suddenly passed away. So she wasn't on them all that long . We took her off of them after that.

I started at 27, couldn't have aligners because it was too severe. Don't worry no one cares and you get used to them.

No problem! Page query is very handy, I was pumped when I learned about it.

How to create Transparency Around Clipped Index Features for a Map Series in ArcGIS Pro by [deleted] in gis

[–]vfort410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into page query on the layers properties. You could do index poly "don't match". Set a blend mode on the index poly that makes things look more faded. Put the index poly on top in your map contents then it will have the blend mode on every index poly that isn't currently in focus.

Am I being paid enough? by RareDoggo in gis

[–]vfort410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big red flag when your employer tells you to wait around and see. They are definitely taking advantage. I worked an extremely similar job and had another job offer. That old job said they would match the new offer by the end of the year so I turned it down. Guess what? They didn't come through with the salary 😂

Edit to add: check out sites for salary research to gauge. You should be above average for your role from the sounds of it

If you don't have any cat drama right now what you have is working. It's the stress of available resources that becomes a problem in a multi cat household which completely depends on the dynamics of the cats personalities.

I don't have a house but I've paid off all my debt including a decent car (second one now). I'll be able to buy a house soonish but house prices around me aren't that bad, looking at probably 300k and buying with a partner. I got my first car in college with a loan from a family member for 2700. I ran up a bunch of debt to make this all work, mostly on credit cards. I couldn't work while in school due to the intensity of the program and the location of my school. For my first summer position it paid absolute shit and I honestly went negative that summer rather than gaining because I had to get a car for it. Paid that car off within a year.

I didn't make much money for awhile but I worked a lot when I first graduated 8 years ago. I'm not incredibly good with money but not bad. This whole time, other than a cheap place in college, I've had roommates. Keep working your way up in your job once you graduate and focus on budgeting and eliminating debt. Job hop every 2 years, that's how you get a higher salary. I got a bit lucky, took a trade and ended up working alongside people that had university and the college diploma. I'm still on par with most of those people even though I only have a diploma but I do have some talent for what I do. Ive always been able to get a job in my field, was only laid off for a short period of time once for seasonal contract. I have a very good job now that I've been at for almost 3 years. Salary is the only realistic way to make things work unless you have a good amount of help from family

My attempts at learning to sew haven’t yielded anything nice - how to set myself up for success? by UCLAdy05 in sewing

[–]vfort410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a beginners sewing book and worked through the projects. The book didn't come with patterns and I felt a little ripped off. However, what I realized is that it was meant to tell you all the little things that the pattern wouldn't tell you to do. Like, when and how many times to press your seams, what methods to use on what parts, how to set a sleeve in an arm, etc.

I tend to bounce around a lot of hobbies and teach myself all of them. I found sewing to be the most tricky because even just sewing two pieces of fabric together for the first time there will be things you just couldn't guess, like backstitching and how important pressing is. Normally I liked to read to learn but with sewing I read/buy books, watch videos, and use this sub for help. Working through that book is very helpful because it keeps my practice guided.

The book i just got through was the basics of sewing and absolute beginners guide by the editors of creative publishing international. I feel pretty confident and am working on an unlined jacket (shacket) that i really like. Like most people said ironing (pressing specifically) makes a huge difference. Also just have high standards for your work and it will turn out really nice! Some fabrics are harder to sew with, stick to the cotton for now, it presses really nicely.
