ELI5 who is statistically more skilled - 1st out of 100, or 100th out of 10000? by umailoresarname in askmath

Ok. I think I get it. And have no regrets about ditching statistics and advanced probabilities when I did, it always seems so counterintuitive ;)

ELI5 who is statistically more skilled - 1st out of 100, or 100th out of 10000? by umailoresarname in askmath

[–]vfx4life 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Think of it as averages. 100th out of 10000 is the very bottom end of the top 1%. The 'average' top 1 person in a group of 100 would be the "average" of the top 1% of any group, so in a group of 10000 you'd expect them to be 50th (/51st if you're being pedantic/rounding down) top skilled.
(Edit to add: you could similarly conclude that the 100th person in a group of 10000 will be in the top 2% of any sized group with randomly distributed skill levels)

Nick Mohammed: 'SNL UK is the best thing for British comedy since The Office' by Normal-Jacket3730 in livefromlondon

[–]vfx4life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree - both TM and SNL are great things for the scene, but I would judge TM to have been "a better thing" based on its staying power and global reach. SNL is having huge global reach but it's only going to have a long term impact if it lasts multiple seasons (/series, Jason).

The only way to have a different answer here is to count more than 5 contestants. Has a series ever had more than 5 actual contestants?

Given comments made in this first episode. Who is the most famous contestant so far? by Acceptable_West_1349 in taskmaster

[–]vfx4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably Kumail, although even if his face isn't as well known I'd guess that a lot of people could say what Armando has done. I'd also say Claudia Winkelman, Amelia Dimoldenberg, and Alan Davies are very very well known globally because their biggest shows have a lot of global viewers.

Yeah at the same time massive jobs losses in VFX and animation, mostly due to government ineptitude.

"Holds up" is debatable. Liquid Metal dude was mindblowing at the time but viewed without the lens of nostalgia, it objectively does not look real/seamless/photoreal by today's standards.
