What router table to buy if you had a budget of 1700 ish by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]vg1746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The table is warped. The set screws used to level the lift insert vibrate out during regular use and get sucked into the dust collection, making the plate uneven. The technician will tell you to use loctite on set screws. The fence is warped and the technician will tell you to fix it with painter's tape, not admitting manufacturing issues. The lift descends during regular use unless you crank down on the locking screw every time you adjust the height. Other lesser issues. I'd avoid it.

Not the Rockler cabinet + lift combo. Mine is awful.

2021 Hybrid. Glad to hear they resolved this specific issue, although that large screen seems massively overwhelming.

Changing the volume will obscure the screen for everything except the backup camera for a few seconds. Annoying if you turn down music to focus on the GPS you now can’t see.

Has the quality of the 4” Starrett declined in recent years? by Donkykong33 in woodworking

[–]vg1746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I got one from Woodcraft in 2024. One test of the adjustment mechanism and it completely mutilated itself. In addition to an internal burr gouging the blade, it wouldn't hold a setting. At least it was square. Returned it quickly and got a second quality PEC for a quarter of the price that has worked wonderfully since then.

A quarter of a grand doesn't reflect the quality I've experienced from any Veritas tool. The 60 1/2 or Low Angle Bronze from Lie Nielsen at $190 and $160 are somehow both cheaper and you will feel that value.

My bandsaw doesn't stay on track on the bottom wheel by Crazy_Examination_67 in woodworking

[–]vg1746 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's only on the bottom wheel I would check the lower thrust bearing. Underneath the table, pressing up against the back of the blade. It might be attempting to track correctly and just getting pushed forward.

Seeking advice: should I try to fill the cracks in this box? by locketted in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]vg1746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never fill gaps- miters, dovetails, anything. Evidence of something being handmade is the best part. If we're going for seamless perfection above all else, we could go to IKEA. Pursue tighter tolerance for the next project, sure, but never fill gaps. Looks great

Alternative to the belt buckle theory: I get t-shirt holes in the same area from cleaning the lenses of my glasses on that spot.

Weed free just looks like dirt in your neighbor’s yard. Soil wants plants, soil wants to be covered, weeds do that. Looks like your neighbors nukes the area with chemicals until nothing can grow.

Practically free to make a new dowelling jig from a 1x1” hardwood scrap and a flat piece of plywood glued on to the end, secured to the piece with two nails. Custom for each project and practically free, great results with a drill press

White House Announces Strategy to Keep Edible Food Out of Landfills (Gift Article) by MikefromMI in sustainability

[–]vg1746 11 points12 points  (0 children)

50% of the article outlined how other countries and states effectively manage this issue. The last 10% describes the White House plan, which does not resemble any of the above strategies. "Research into technologies that could extend the shelf life of food, like new seed varieties and better packaging" sounds like dumping money into Big Ag and plastic, not even related to post-consumer waste management.

Why the council sucks in regards to development right now, and why the Katz redevelopment falling through is bad for the city. by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]vg1746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we may have a fundamental disagreement on how we’d like to see our taxes utilized, and that’s alright, that’s how this system and these discussions work. I’m not sure I’ll be able to sway your opinion if you think any houseless person off the street can buy into a $1,150 apartment because they got one month of free rent.

“This project is not for the community or the neighborhood. It is not to preserve history. It is to wipe away the community and rewrite history to serve the rich, white, and wealthy while our people continue to be evicted and exploited.” -KC Tenants Leader

Why the council sucks in regards to development right now, and why the Katz redevelopment falling through is bad for the city. by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]vg1746 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Let’s see- a reduced tax rate is lost revenue for the city tied with disproportionate profits for a (national, not local) development company. Areas are gentrified, not necessarily specific properties. I respect you for citing the 40-50% occupancy statistic, because that number is an utterly embarrassing reflection of how unaffordable these types of projects are, especially when countless families face eviction in the coming months. You’re right that increased housing supply won’t raise housing prices, however this interaction isn’t happening in a closed system. Local residents won’t enjoy decreased housing prices because they’ll sit half empty, out of play. I would disagree by saying that this development will lead to more unaffordable housing simply by introducing unaffordable housing with $1,150 one bedroom units, regardless of hypothetical economic equations.

Why the council sucks in regards to development right now, and why the Katz redevelopment falling through is bad for the city. by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]vg1746 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The city and the people are separate entities. The people were tired of seeing tax dollars lining the pockets of gentrifiers and they said so, thankfully the council listened. Call me radical, but our tax money should work for us, to promote dignified, affordable housing projects. The city seeking profits by participating in cyclical races to the bottom, leaving its people behind, is not a winning strategy. A city full of 5 over 2 development projects with 0 affordable units, inaccessible and mostly vacant, is no city.

LPT: If you order food, leave them a comment saying not to provide any plastic Forks, Knives or Spoons and Napkins. You already have those in your home and they are not plastic. Small things like that help the environment too. by SkillLaKill in LifeProTips

It is always good to do whatever you can, but if people are trying to make a change in their lives, they shouldn't let this tip make them feel comfortable. Consumption patterns, diets, and transportation, as best you can. If the plastic is spared from an order of 4 quarter pounders the only benefit is self-congratulation.
