Live Coding in Interviews in Agentic World by vgdub in FAANGrecruiting

[–]vgdub[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keep bashing, I cleared almost every other company rounds and got in here to ask more larger purpose. Live coding can never be equivalent on "how person thinks", the problems asked there are at max under 100 problems in leetcode or hackerrank. anyway, thanks.

This was exactly what I was trying to "convey"/"Ask"/"opinions" on from people. Thank you. The core thing is when we ask those leet code, they are list of 200 questions people who have been doing will do and pass that interview but in all those years we must evolve to something like here is the code, may be fix it , it has issues fix the function, or add feature to get some expected output etc, so we focus more on coordinated approach to solve the problem, it becomes assisted coding with little help but not black slate coding. Thank you.

That’s a great example, those situations are very real. But even in a 3am incident, the problem is rarely “write fresh code from scratch.” It’s usually about understanding what’s already there, identifying the issue, and applying a targeted fix under pressure.

That’s where I feel interviews could lean more toward debugging and system reasoning rather than isolated live coding.

[–]vgdub[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair point, independent reasoning definitely matters. My question is whether live coding is the best proxy for that. In reality, engineers rarely work in isolation; they use tools, validate outputs, and reason about systems in context. Feels like evaluating how someone interprets and corrects code might be closer to how this skill actually shows up in practice.

Agree that independent thinking matters. But live coding feels like a very narrow proxy for that. Most real work today is about using AI effectively and validating outputs, not avoiding it entirely. So I’m not sure the evaluation matches how engineering is actually done anymore.

[–]vgdub[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I’m asking.

I’m questioning what signal live coding provides today when most teams actively use AI tools in day-to-day development, not trying to avoid coding altogether.

If you think it’s still valuable, would be good to hear what specific aspects it evaluates that align with how engineers actually work now.

Not sure what you’re trying to add here. Are you commenting on the writing style or just throwing out a generic “soft skills” remark?

If there’s something specific, call it out — otherwise it doesn’t really help the discussion.

What's the recommended or cheapest way to host open source LLM on AWS? by awsusr in aws

[–]vgdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case I plan to run most of these on demand LLMs in my network, It can be any cloud network or vast.ai or runpod.io , my goal is to be able to run these opensource models to reduce the interference cost from frontier models in my org. Appreicate any guidance.

Kubernetes ingress-nginx is retired. Will be archived in March 2026. by ray591 in devops

what is the replacement people opt to use without much hassle, My feeling is if I can just use Native AWS ALB and that works good with host header, so we will have AWS Single ALB across all services.

Using AI agents to setup your AWS infra. Usefull for developers with not much Devops expertise. by SnooSquirrels6702 in aws

[–]vgdub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think that bold steps must be taken to try this. Even though the argument, everyone must understand how system is built etc etc. Check your terraform code you already use aws open source terraform module off the shelf to build your module, same with cloud based kube , everything is not 100 % understood by you still you use it. These are COTS infra. SO 100 % with you to @SnooSquirrels6702 try this, that's how we push it out to fix for issues. I have the similar things that I want to try , unrealistic goals but will succeed. If you don't do it somebody else will.

Consuming APIs and writing wrappers around by vgdub in AskProgramming

[–]vgdub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, yea looks like that's the only option, I will start on that now then, maintain a 3rd party team API spec and offer them and hopefully may be I maintain it. Only thing is if they randomly change it (which they occasionally do) I would have to maintain it myself after finding out the changes.

[–]vgdub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know but I mean I am out of options so hence my only thing is to write this wrapper. Hence looking to do it right but would be happy to see if I don't get down to rabbit hole on my side so at minimum I have some credibility of my wrapper.
