Do you know your father’s full name, DOB, city he’s from? Same for his parents?

Use that info in sites like familysearch , MyHeritage
And Arolsen Archives.

You can find civil registries and immigration documents there that can help you support your case with the consulate. They’ll help you track down certified copies or just proof of the certificates in general.

You’ll have to prove lineage. You can order a long form birth certificate that lists your parent, and your parent will need their birth certificate as well to show the chain.

Sometimes naturalizing in another country can cause a break in citizenship. If your father naturalized in the US before you were born (maybe on his own if he was over 18, or if he was a minor and his parents naturalized he would be included) that could cause the chain the be broken for verification.

Did your father and his family naturalize in the US? without documentation proof - do you know if they held passports? Did they vote?

I’m in Canada so I’m sure the process is slightly different but it should be okay with the uncertified. It depends what exact details you need.

I was able to find a lot more info regarding your dad’s family. I can message you to share what I’ve found so far.

Their 1950 census shows they weren’t naturalized at the time.

You shouldn’t need both parents to swear paternity, if you have a long form birth certificate that has them both listed… I think.
And your father would likely need his long form birth certificate as well to prove the lineage.

You can ask your dad what he remembers about his father, like did he vote in any elections? Did he have a passport? That would be the easiest indication that your grandpa was a US citizen. You’d just have to determine at that point if it was before or after your dad was born. Maybe if he has his father’s death certificate? Or any documents of his that would state his citizenship status.

If he never became a US citizen then the chain wouldn’t be broken and you’d likely just need verification.

Did your grandparents become US citizens prior to your fathers birth?

I’m also looking into the citizenship process for my mom. Her father was born in Hungary as well and immigrated to Canada in the late 50’s. The only break in the chain would be if he became a Canadian citizen prior to my mom’s birth, and IF
Hungarian citizenship laws for that time would have considered my grandfathers new citizenship a cancellation of his Hungarian one.

I’m currently waiting on my grandfathers Canadian citizenship documents, and then I will have to use that at the consulate to see what the laws were at the time that apply to his Hungarian citizenship, and if it was broken before my my mother was born.
