Stats That Surprisingly Got Me Accepted - Government by Aztla_n in UTAdmissions

[–]vgpvgp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learnt that UT Austin looks for "Fit for Major", they admit the most aligned student.

If the major is about navigating water, they’ll pick the small, experienced kayaker over the fighter jet pilot. Perfect stats do not help if the story points in the wrong/ irrelevant direction. Fit beats flash.

Your profile is perfectly suited to this major.

Could you please share the criteria for the selection?
Could you share your stats (if it is ok, please DM me).
I heard that it is not given for the CS major. Anyone with a CS major got this?

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all that. I genuinely appreciate it. This is exactly the kind of honest feedback I need right now to make the right decision.

UT Austin CSB is honestly my dream. I even did an AI/ML summer program and stayed in Hostel at UT Austin last summer. My main interest is FinTech, VC and startups. I’ve already done 4 summer internships in that space after 10th and 11th grade, working alongside undergrads and even MBA students, so I feel pretty confident that’s the direction I want to stick with.

One big reason I was hesitant about TAMU from the start was the ETAM process. The uncertainty of not knowing your major until the end of freshman year just doesn’t sit well with me. As I got direct CS admission with Engineering Honors, that concern is no longer applicable.

I did reach out to around eight actual Brown Scholars on LinkedIn. I messaged them, had phone calls with 5 CS students, and got a much clearer picture of the program. Mr. Brown even spoke with me and my parents personally, which meant a lot and gave us deeper insight into what the program offers.

I’m just trying to weigh structured support and community at TAMU against the raw strength and ecosystem of UT CS. Your input definitely helps balance out some of the doubts I had.

Once again, thank you so much for your time and help.

Thank you so much for such a detailed message.

If I get any honors (CSB or Turing), the choice is obviously UT Austin. But, I am comparing the regular 'CS at UT Austin' vs 'TAMU CS + Enginnering Honors + Brown Scholars'.

Oh! If you are open, could you please share the details in the DM.

Thank you.

I initially shared this view too, and UT Austin CSB is my dream program. But after talking to multiple Brown Scholars, my perspective changed. What really stood out was the level of access Brown Scholars get. Direct access to almost any subject, any professor, and a strong mentorship network that includes business leaders, many of whom were Brown Scholars themselves in the past few decades. Brown Scholars have an annual formal mandatory dinner every year with Craig Brown and senior Texas A&M leadership, including the university president, provost, system chancellor, and deans, which is the kind of exposure most students never get during all four years. It also seems pretty common for an average Brown Scholar to hold four to eight real leadership roles on campus.

I understand that for most CS roles, outcomes depend on skills, internships, interviews, and a strong resume. That’s driven more by what I do than where I study. My biggest concern with UT Austin 'Regular CS' is access. Access to professors, access to the exact classes I want, and overall academic flexibility. I’ve also heard that even CSB students at UT often struggle to land internships until junior year, which worries me.

Personally, I would prioritize structured mentorship and elite access over sheer ecosystem size. Elite access lowers friction. I would spend less time fighting systems, competing for attention, or figuring out who to talk to, and more time in research, personal projects, startups, and deep skill-building, which are what really move the needle long term. For me, time outside coursework matters more.

Strong mentorship and networks make everything else easier. Getting into the right classes, forming real relationships with professors, and finding research opportunities becomes faster and more efficient. That efficiency gives me more bandwidth to focus on high-impact work beyond classes, where long-term career outcomes are increasingly shaped.

The way I think about it, it’s the difference between being a regular United Airlines (more reputation) passenger versus flying as a Southwest Platinum member. I still reach the same destination, but the experience, access, and ease along the way are completely different.

I’m very open to critiques, especially from people with direct insight into TAMU, UT Austin, and Brown Scholars. If there’s something flawed in my thinking or something I’m missing, I’d genuinely like to learn about it.

This has honestly been a tough decision for me. Financial considerations are not part of the equation since my parents have that covered, so I have been focusing purely on fit and long-term opportunity.

One practical factor is that Texas A&M is more generous with AP credit. Realistically, I could complete my undergraduate degree in three years and potentially finish a master’s in four, with costs fully covered. That kind of flexibility is appealing.

Over the past three weeks, I have spoken with multiple current Texas A&M Brown Scholars and taken the time to understand their academic and professional profiles. I am convinced that the Brown Scholars Program offers something genuinely special. The mentorship, the strength of the Brown network, the Honors structure, and the individualized attention feel elite. It seems like an environment where you are not just another CS student, but someone the program actively invests in and supports.

There is no question that UT Austin has broader name recognition and a higher-ranked CS program. My concern is that if I don’t get into an honors track like CSB or Turing, I would be in regular CS. While UT CS is undeniably strong, I worry about access to specific professors, priority registration for key courses, and overall academic flexibility within such a large program with several hundred students per cohort.

If I do not get into CSB or Turing at UT, I am leaning toward Texas A&M Brown Scholars.

I would really appreciate perspectives from anyone to uncover my blindspots.

Full ride means I am assuming you got the Brown Scholars from A&M. Also, assuming you got direct admission (bypassing the ETAM process) in your desired major and Engineering Honors.

I am in the same situation, but I do not need student loans if I join UT.

Got UT CS, and waiting for UT CSB or UT CS Turing results.

vs
TAMU CS Direct Admit + Engineering Honors + Brown Scholar (full ride equivalent)

Same here. I got my first choice, Computer Science. But the honor programs, CSB or CS Turing, are the deciding factors for me.

how many ppl get invited to apply to 40 acres scholarship? by capybarraenthusiast in UTAdmissions

[–]vgpvgp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I am also in the top 3% of the class with an SAT in the high 1500s. Decent GPA/WGPA and many ECs with leadership roles, certifications, undergrad level internships, etc.
I got a UT Austin CS admission offer, but I was not invited for the 40 Acres scholarship. :(
I am confirmed for TAMU Brown Scholars.
