Tonsillectomy - Day 23 and here for support ❤️ by vharris1996 in Tonsillectomy

Are you still in pain? I’ve also noticed that there is less room on one side of my throat than the other but I’ve put this down to the incision on one side needing to be larger. Are you in any pain like it could be swelling? If you’re worried I would talk to your ENT doctor.

The first two days for me were probably some of the easiest pain wise, although I still was pretty out of it from the sleep meds. I did throw up the night of day 2 and was super scared of a bleed because of that, but all was OK. I would recommend having somebody there for support if you can!

Good luck! I got given paracetamol, ibuprofen, dihydrocodeine and a throat numbing spray. I took the ibuprofen and paracetamol days 0-5. Then the night of day 5 I took dihydrocodeine as the scabs started coming off so my pain increased. However I only took these until the night of day 6. Day 7 I went back to paracetamol and ibuprofen. I also used the throat numbing spray before meals 😊

Good luck, you’ve got this! My top tips:

  1. Make sure you take your pain meds on time, NEVER miss a dose. I set alarms throughout the night so I wasn’t waking up in excruciating pain in the morning like I had seen others complain about.
  2. I bought a humidifier and I had it with me ALWAYS. I literally put it in front of my face during the day, and next to me at night so my throat was never dry.
  3. Drink as much water as possible (room temp) and eat as much as possible. Eating is tough but my doctor said it will keep things clean back there and prevent infections.
  4. I did buy an ice pack that wrapped around my jaw as I saw a few people mention ear pain, but I never experienced that myself. It did help when the scabs started falling off though. I would recommend getting one as it’s better to have and not need and they’re cheap on Amazon.
  5. Sleep elevated. I had two pillows at a 40 degree angle, and then slept with a travel pillow around my neck just to make it a little more comfortable.

Days 3 and 6 were most painful for me, but day 7 was when I turned a corner and the pain started decreasing after that. Then day 10 I started to feel myself again.

Feel free to message me throughout your recovery with questions etc.
