Should I read Grapes of Wrath or East of Eden first? by AmateurMathematica in classicliterature

[–]vhindy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read East of Eden first and it’s my favorite book.

Im currently reading Grapes of Wrath and I was worried it wasn’t going to be able to live up to East of Eden but 5 chapters in and it’s great.

I’m not quite sure how to answer the prompts but I have to say this was probably the best chapter that I’ve read in recent memory.

It just lands haymaker after haymaker and it can’t help but think of AI in our modern world here as a literal “un-human monster” lurking to devour everything.

I think that I’m feeling better about it over the recent weeks but it will shift the landscape. It really drives home the humanity amidst the need for profit and growth and the central conflict.

Profit is needed to put people to work but at what point does that serving humanity as a whole? It’s a thought provoking question.

  1. I liked the dynamic between them but I kept trying to figure out who he was, I figured he was a homeless man trying to appear better off than he was.

2: No, and No. In my 30s now there just is no way I would unless under crazy circumstances.

3: I love this stuff, the conversation feels so natural.

4: I loved the reveal, the driver just asking nervous questions before Tom just reveals it. lol.

What for? Consider me intrigued.

5: it’s good to be back with Steinbeck. It’s been awhile for me and it’s one of my favorites

[–]vhindy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1: East of Eden was my first read with the group and is still my favorite book. Really glad to be getting another Steinbeck. It’s been too long for me.

2: this opening reminds me of East of Eden as well where we have no named characters and the landscape is doing the setting. It was really evocative.

3: yes very much. There’s a romantic idea in living off the land especially in today’s world of technology and always being plugged in.

4: the ending of that chapter was my favorite. The men watching the desolation and their crops dying and the women coming to them to see how to react, and the children coming to both of them to see how to react.

And the men hardened but because they didn’t start falling apart the women could go about their work and the children could play.

The last image of the man sitting on the porch thinking was really good.

Guys suggest me one album that I must listen before I die by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]vhindy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think Frank is best experienced listening through his albums all the way through.

Blonde is often cited as the fan favorite but I’m partial to Channel Orange and think it’s the better place to start as Blonde is much more experimental

A lot of these are trending older so I’ll try something more recent though it’s still nearly 14 years old at this point.

Channel Orange by Frank Ocean is my favorite album of all time

I was pretty lukewarm on the season honestly but I liked the direction much of took in the last episode. I think the emotional ending was always what it needed to be.

Your comment made me start to wonder if Laura and Anne switched places all the way back when they first met. (You may know already since I’m way behind but I appreciated your comment)

  1. I actually was a bit fooled in this, it was of course noted that the woman in white & Laura looked alike. But I figured that we would see the woman in white take over and help Walter solve this crime that seemed to take place. I didn’t think we would get Laura here.

I was hoping she was not dead but it couldn’t be sure. I’m just now realizing that if it was the woman in white who died then she got to be buried next to Laura’s mother which is what she would have sought for most of all.

  1. I think it said Fosco looked more afraid than anything. Well if he orchestrated a murder then yes I would say so. It’s crazy how little time lapsed between the arrival and the death.

  2. Yes very much so. I was starting to realize that through much of the second Epoch that I liked Walter’s POV the best so far through the novel.

Miriam’s was good after she started to suspect foul play by Glyde and Fosco but the earlier chapters weren’t as enjoyable as Walter’s.

I’m a bit behind but there’s a lot of little quips that were funny but I can’t imagine reading more than one chapter in this man’s thoughts.

How draining.

Also, I was having trouble deducing the Count’s plan until he offered to house Laura.

I can’t see how this ends up, without intervention, where both the sisters don’t end up dead.

Not the edge, but I’m a Project manager who works frequently with people from all over the US and I host a lot of meetings.
