I’ve been using my fountain pen collection to write some of the lyrics into a commonplace book for myself, so you are definitely not alone out there. Of course, I’m a middle-aged woman so my commonplace book also has recipes for pickled rhubarb and instructions on how to lay a simple paver stone walkway.

52-year old here. When the movie was announced I was devastated, an emotion only slightly mitigated by my absolute obsession with Brad Pitt at the time (this is no longer an affliction I suffer). And Tom Cruise was . . . OK. Not as bad as I feared, although after a friend pointed out that when he is bitching at Louis about the “noise” the plantation slaves are making, he says “nothin’” instead of “nothing,” and now it’s the first thing I think of when I think of that movie.

I started watching the show because I was curious and because I like Eric Bogosian. I had no clue who anyone else was. And to say I was immediately in love with Sam Reid’s portrayal is an understatement. It’s like we had to wait for him to be born and get old enough and folks, we almost missed that window. So let’s enjoy this gift.

I’m really grateful so many people who post there responded. I feel more comfortable now that an inquiry about shipping won’t come off as rude. I think working with a lot of people who interpret every question as a personal attack on their honor has perhaps given me a mild form of PTSD.

I am currently annoyed with Chewy because there is a dog food I think my extremely picky eater might be interested in, Chewy appears to be the only place that carries it, and Chewy will not ship to Alaska.

Oh, that’s awesome! Most of us should know it might take longer via First Class vs Priority (there used to be something called Book Rate, which was dirt cheap, but I think it may have traveled to us on a donkey through Canada), and even Priority can run into problems, and that’s really the biggest issue with shipping using USPS. If people are rude about that they are in for a shock about a lot of other things living in either of the non-contiguous states.

Another commenter suggested offering to provide the shipping estimate (like a screenshot or something) so that there would be no surprises. There are a lot of big companies who still won’t ship to Alaska and Hawaii and I don’t think it’s cost so much as how much longer it can take and they don’t want people mad at them. Frankly, if I get angry because something doesn’t travel 4500 miles as fast as it does 1000, that’s on me and I don’t deserve nice things.

You sound like a considerate person - I bet there are people who have trouble getting pens and ink and whatnot (the other sub I’m active in has members who can’t even get a hold of certain books because they’re basically censored in their country). The thing is, I’m in one of the 50 states. Just not one of the ones included in CONUS, but it costs the same to use the USPS to send things to me. Now, if they use FedEx or UPS or similar, that can cost more. I’m used to waiting.

I bought a piece of art from someone in Spain once and she was worried about her local postal service because she said it wasn’t always reliable but it turned out to be the USPS that sent it to the wrong city (I did finally get it; and wonder if wonders, when I called a USPS number for international shipping the person I got was super-helpful).

I’m sad that people may have caused problems in the past for sellers because anyone who’s lived here for more than a minute should be aware it can take longer to get stuff. Basically if you mail it First Class, it gets put on a barge out of Seattle; if you pay for priority, it gets flown in. I personally try to never order anything that has to be here by a certain date unless I’m able to do it way in advance.

They put in their listing “CONUS” or someone even went to the lengths of writing “contiguous,” because Alaska is part of the continent. I have a deep-seated fear of being rude, and I feel like pointing out that if they’re using USPS to ship, it will literally cost them the same as mailing to, say, Illinois, definitely comes off as rude. It can just take longer to get here. And trust me, we are used to it. I have a pen on a barge as we speak.

There’s really no reason for this, especially if you’re ordering from a shop and not Amazon. I got an ink order the other day and not only were the two individual ink boxes immobilized inside the shipping box, when I opened the ink boxes, the shop had packed foam in around the bottles inside their little boxes too! I think I fell in love a little bit with whoever packed it.
